Hello Mike, I was in a small furniture shop in Denver yesterday and noticed this box from across the room. Before we even walked over to it, I told my wife this box was made by "Mike Farrington". It now resides on my desk at work, as of this morning. At the end of your video, you said it was a box "designed to store nothing specific at all." Well, the matter is settled... It is full of ink cartridges for my fountain pens. Thanks for the beautiful box!!!

Last time you made something as beautiful as this, I made the mistake of thinking it would be as easy to produce as you make it seem - I have learned my lesson. Especially the bit where you use the little jigs to plane precise angles on very small pieces of wood, and it works perfectly first time. Nevertheless, I will still attempt to make this little box, as the design is so cool. Thanks for a great video, and many hours of fun trying to copy your woodworking.

Awesome video as always Mike! I don't think I would have got into the triangle gridwork if it wasn't for your jig. You mentioned something about it being easier to make the box around the kumiko panel because it's difficult to change the pitch of the panel easily. I've designed a jig for cutting the triangle gridwork, and it allows me to adjust the pitch of the kumiko down to +-.01mm. I have a video of my demonstrating it on my channel. I really wanted to invent a jig that allowed me to size a kumiko panel to fit into a cabinet door panel without me having to size the doors to the panel. This also means I can size kumiko to plans from SketchUp. Thanks for the videos Mike!!
@MikeFarrington
@MikeFarrington 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Sounds like a cool Jig I'll check it out. I think even with an adjustable jig it would be easier to adjust the box. That is a simple matter of a couple shavings with a shoulder plane. I really don't think there is a wrong way, its a matter of preference.

It's not often that I watch someone build something out of wood that I could not also build... But I couldn't do this lol. My hand tool knowledge isn't there yet. On another note, as per your suggestion I have incorporated MH Ready Patch spackling into my woodworking arsenal. It's a fantastic product. I still use Crawford's spackling paste frequently, but the MH dries a little harder and a little faster. The Crawford's is smoother, cheaper, and lasts longer in the can. And you can thin it super easy so it's versatile. I like to keep my Crawford's at the consistency of like... Whipped cream. Let's me speed through spackling super fast without fighting the drying spackle on the knife Thanks a bunch for the recommendation. Both Crawford's and MH are fantastic products and I will likely use them both for different situations for many years to come

So beautiful, I really need to try Kumiko myself someday, it looks very relaxing. I don't have any planes, chisels, or sharpening stones though...

Give it a go. You'll know right away if you like it or not. If you are starting with no tools. Just buy one chisel and give it a try.

Beautiful work as usual, I take it you made a lot of these with all the jigs etc you had to design and build

For this video I just made the one. The jigs are mostly leftovers from other kumiko projects.

Mike, a beautiful little piece; you've really 'fixtured-up' to produce some kumiko... Happy Holidays to you and yours and keep the videos coming!

Mike, love you channel! In particular, your humor while maintaining your professional demeanor! An amazing craftsman! I was searching your "KZbin" in search of your KUMIKO jigs, what is needed, how to make.. Are those plans deleted? I follow and buy books from Desmond King, the master. But prefer a machinery approach apposed to all hand work. Yes... I know, the true craftsmanship is in the hands. But...

Thumbs up for Bon Jovi vibes ❤️ On a side note, no pun intended, I do prefer Slippery when wet as album, but New Jersey contains some interesting tracks nonetheless. Ah, almost forgot to mention: box is great! Hopefully after I finish to tackle my workbench and some side projects, I will dedicate some time to fine woodworking projects. Thanks for the great video, Best!

Very nice! Would be cool to see a similar one with the star tapered down, kind of like a dome top. For some reason that is what I see for the first few seconds I see it.

I thought about doing that to this one, but it can only be domed so much before the lap joints start to show. Next time I would make the strips taller so they could be domed more and make that idea work.
