I recently just finished kumon and all of the things that I learned there gave me a grade in math above 96 on high school (Grade 7 - 10), i would say its effective, but what I would say is the amount of time you can possibly take on a single worksheet. Especially when you reach Level M - O. That's why most people stop after level L because of how long kumon can take, more time there, means more money to spend. But for me personally, after finishing M, N, and O, it helped me so much. Especially Trigonometry. It makes me see Trigonometry as an easy topic. I'm currently in Grade 11 and I'm feeling pretty good and fresh on their maths. This can allow me to study other subjects. And I didn't need to study. For example, I have a Science and Math Exam next week, I can prioritize my science more since I already mastered most of the lessons taught by kumon. 😁

I think the answer to " is Kumon worth it" is really complicated. If you are a math major tutoring your own child in mathematics, then Kumon really helps because you already have content that can be used for tutoring and as a work assignment for your child. It's really hard to find good content because you have to create them first. This is just one positive side of Kumon among the many sides good and bad.

As a Kumon Instructor in the UK, I would agree that the linear structure of the Kumon worksheets, which are designed to ensure that the student masters each essential concept before moving to the next concept, is key to the success of the Kumon method, although I would add that the tutoring/teaching of children is of course not quite within the Kumon ethos of encouraging our students to become truly independent learners.

Hi from Thailand what annoys my wife about Kumon is our son is enrolled in its English program but his worksheets are in Thai language. How is he supposed to learn English reading grammar ect We don’t think it’s worth it simply because he’s not being giving the work sheets in the language he needs help in And as for the kumon app that’s okay if the parents can afford to buy iPads ( for the bigger screen ) But try using the app on a phone absolutely impossible Sorry for the rant PS And the price here is THB 1,800 per month depending which subject Maths Thai English

I took my kids to Kumon and I agree with your video. I initially did it for my 5 year old to get her more interested in reading and writing as a prep for Kindergarten and it was great. She did very well and I did notice a big improvement with that, her interest really grew from there. My older child 2nd grade did math and it was very repetitive which I understand but some kids grasp easier and it became boring to her. So I switched her to reading and it's OK but As you said not much room for independent thinking and creativity.

I love to hear that you had a good experience with the Kumon reading programme. I would like to mention that it's actually a common misconception that there's no room for independent and creative thinking in Kumon. On the surface, it may not seem traditionally independent or creative, but it is meant to be when the Kumon method is applied correctly. As Kumon instructors, our aim is to help students develop a learning "toolbox" that is filled with all sorts of skills and methods to solve problems and tackle challenges independently and with confidence. At the very heart of that are independent thinking and creative problem-solving abilities. I hope that your children enjoyed their learning at their Kumon centre and that they are still able to apply the skills they developed there to their school and daily lives! It's no easy feat to be a Kumon student.

Great video and explanation. As a light defense of Kumon, I understand that their philosophy is to develop a child's basic mathematics as a foundation so that they can have the fluency necessary to build more broad comprehension and application. I have not tried Kumon, but I see that many schools trying to teach comprehension first are inadvertently just instructing children to just memorize various methods anyway (without those methods translating to comprehension). Of course a great tutor might accomplish both :)

Comprehension is the thing so yes a great platform. I struggled with history until I hit 40 or so. I now have the arguably the largest online presence of free access to history sites in the UK, along with arguably the top site in the uk for genuine free museums of educational merit. I pulled the site a couple uf years back when I noticed I could not get backing to promote a genuine site free of adds. So yes I comprehend fully the shitty parking and lack of comprehension by my local kumon tutor that folk need respect and if my local kenos tutor cannot even teach the parents to park politely they probably would have little chance convincing me to not act like a shit when the parents and children come out of the session. Just saying...... treat me and my family like shite and I can treat you and yours like shite once you hit 3 polite requests. I can do it so many ways , some you will not even realise come from me, they would just be to jug your memory.

Both my kids have been doing kumon since the age of 4 . But I think it’s not ideal for a child who is struggling at school, as you mentioned it teaches your child to be independent. I love it , although it makes me fight with my kids😂 cause it’s too much work .

i am 12 going into grade 8 and i hate kumon and it dosent help me i need 1 on 1 learning in the stuff my teacher is giving me not some wanna be teacher that is just giving me work that i am not even working on in school if i could give kumaon a 0/10 i would but i give it a 1/10 me my mom and my dad fight every day to not do it and it suck.

I think personal experiences with Kumon will vary depending on the teacher. You would be an excellent Kumon instructor! Why not open a Kumon? Seems like the purpose of this video is to get clients for yourself, so by logic, of course you must render Kumon as not effective. Kumon works great! You are probably a great tutor too!

Thank you! Unfortunately, my values don't align with Kumon's values. Although our goal of helping children improve in mathematics may be the same, the methods we use to reach that goal are very different. Honestly, the purpose of the video is to help parents see what leads to true success in mathematics. Regardless of the means, whether it's Kumon, KZbin videos, textbooks, MasterMaths, etc., focusing just on methods and techniques will never lead to genuine success in math. That is what I wish someone told my mom when I was 12 years old and struggling in mathematics. Maybe then, how I saw mathematics would've been different and maybe then, I would've done a lot better in the subject much earlier in life.

2 kids in Kumon, 8th and 6th grade and they absolutely hate it. We are now paying for additional online tutoring so my kids get the immediate help they need with their school work. If you have younger kids...then absolutely yes to Kumon, if not just find a tutor.

You make a good point here. Kumon is not an immediate solution. As we focus on foundational understanding and comprehension, it's not going to fix the issue in the short term. Although you can start to see changes in your child from day 1, it's definitely a long-term solution (which many people don't understand). However, if you can stick with something like Kumon (which is by no means an easy feat), the long term benefits to life and learning are definitely worth it. If your kids need immediate help i.e. in the next few weeks, a tutor is definitely a good way to go. Everything has its own time and place.

I go to Kumon and honestly I don't like it but it's helping me grow. I'm gifted in math and reading in school and sometimes way ahead of my class. though the teacher is always there to help me with questions, Kumon is not bad. The only bad thing about is lots of locations are understaffed and small. The when I got to was small but still had plenty of people helping the Instuctor. Even though when it got big and we lost like 5 workers, we gained about15 more. My point is even if your the adult,you don't do the Kumon so you don't know how us kids really think about it.

You are not aware about how kumon helps in middle and higher school maths. Kumon has designed their worksheets very meticulously and they help children think logically and independently. All concepts are illustrated with examples and loads of practice exercises unlike your dreary school books. Kumon is the best source for your children to learn maths and English. Your children will not require tutors who are teaching from same dull books that your children use in school. They have nothing new to offer. Kumon worksheets are both interesting and challenging to young minds. Always talk to the instructor if your child is facing any difficulty with kumon worksheets. They will eagerly help you. Quitting will not help.

Kumon ABSOLUTELY teaches kids to think, but most parents don't stay long enough with the program to experience or see their child achieve this. Being able to connect the dots or to THINK deeply, analytically, or logically about any concept requires mastery of basic facts but also only becomes possible when the part of the brain that is responsible for logical thinking develops. This usually comes to maturity around age 11 or older for most kids. Neurological maturity plays a huge role in critical thinking. Kids spend HOURS at school being taught concepts but still don't grasp them. Most tutors spend a year or so with the same child, if they're lucky. They usually do not see the child's neurological development over a period of 5 to 10 years. As a Kumon instructor, I have seen this first hand. And I have seen weak students STICK to the program, develop grit, and become outstanding and confident self learners by the time they are in high school. There is no magic fix or magic way to explain anything to children. Kids need to learn by manipulating and doing the work. They need to do it often, and they need to develop a bank of facts and skills that are so automatic that they become second nature. Why? Because that's when you free up space in your working memory to start tackling more complex concepts. Kumon works wonders, but you MUST start young. I have a wonderful math tutor that I refer new inquiries to for kids aged 14 or over, as it is usually too late to expect Kumon to help them improve their grades...there is just too much work they have missed. It's like investing in a savings plan, you need to start YOUNG. Be careful making videos like this, as you might take away the opportunity for some children to be transformed by this method. Also, Kumon was not designed for released on the market. It was not designed to make money. It was a labor of love by Toru Kumon, a high school math teacher, for his young son Takeshi. Toru created new worksheets for his son based on his son's performance on the sheets of the previous day. They did this for 6 years, until Takeshi was doing calculus in grade 6. This is why Kumon is amazing. Over time, it WORKS. You must LIVE Kumon to really understand it. I have been doing this for years and I still learn to appreciate it ever day. Good luck!

I just enrolled my three year old (turning 4 in three months) in both the math and reading program and see him grasping the lessons much quicker than any other methods I’ve used in just one month (and he’s been in the best in the city private Montessori pre-school since he was 2.5 years old)! I have a two year old as well and I’m always wondering if I can afford both programs for both my kids in the long run and if it’s worth it, but my gut tells me it’s an investment and what I leave in them is more important than what I leave for them. Your comment helped solidify my conviction. I loved that I decided to get him started early and from ground zero. Even though his vocabulary was ahead of his age, I asked the instructor to start him from scratch just to build a strong foundation. Again, thank you for making me feel good about my decision!!!🙏

My (3rd grade) child would hyperventilate and cry on Kumon days, the entire car ride there because he hated it so much. We decided to stop Kumon because it was such a difficult experience for us. I do not recommend Kumon for kids who like to be active in thought and critical thinking skills to apply to problem solving. Tutor is much better.

hi im 11 yrs old, and ehm my experience in kumon IN asia was like a waste of time because i was 5 and i didn't know how to read every sentence, MY teacher makes me stand with no chair when i get it wrong, the whole time she screaming at me, i dont remember her teaching me how the word was pronounced, Im not hating on kumon i liked it when she wasnt my teacher there anymore XD but its and ok class for me, My parents made me quit kumon because of The Bad Teacher-

Neither, I recommend seeing either if their school can do tutoring or teach yourself with the idea of encouragement in mind. Kumon does not go at the same pace as your child ive heard many many stories about people who've done kumon but are 2 grades behind because of how much they are held back and therefore do not learn anything. There is also Kahn academy for kids as well as much much cheaper but better options for your kids online too that are much more and are able to keep your kids focused, so please look more into that before spending lots of money on something that your kids may not even want to do and waste your money.

If you're only considering 1 subject, you should start with reading. In the reading programme, we place most of our focus on comprehension (i.e. foundational understanding) which is the foundation for everything else you do. As students progress, they learn to critically analyse texts and form their own opinion which is such an important skill to have! It helps them develop curiosity about the world and become well-rounded people.

You see, Kumon students usually start the programme below their grade level, not because they can't do the work, but because we teach them to think differently and start developing self-learning skills. Imagine how overwhelmed a child who is already struggling would be if they came to their first Kumon class day and were asked to do work they don't yet understand AND they're expected to try different ways of thinking while focusing on practicing new skills. Demotivating, right? There's a very good reason for many children to be working below their grade level, but you need to understand why that is, rather than just assuming that it's a bad thing. Kumon is less about WHAT a child learns and more about HOW they learn. As a result of starting at a point where they comfortably understand the work, they generally only reach their grade level within 6 months to a year, BUT then they can progress further than their grade level. There is no limit to what a Kumon student can do.

I started my preschooler on Math first cause I was going to use this magical book from Amazon that thousands of parents swore by to teach him how to read, but he found the book boring and wouldn’t sit still. When I noticed how much he progressed so quickly in math and how much he enjoys sitting to work on it with me, I decided to enrol him in the reading as well and returned that book. It’s just been a month but he is enjoying his reading too now, with his current progress (now in October) he is scheduled to be able to read by January. I’m excited to see his weekly progress. I’d say just find a good location and good instructor (not all kumon centres are the best, unfortunately) but if you find a good one, you found gold for your kid. Also, if you pick one start reading but don’t sleep on the math either (if possible) cause that’s one subject best to have a good foundation in earlier in life.

I love being kumon completer.. kumon taught me how NOT TO BE LAZY in reading the example and how i need to understand it deeply before they gave more challenging questions. And i love how they move step by step not like usual math lesson (in indonesia, it was as hell.. a KG A students needs to solve addition & substraction) and usually the text book gave us a random number (i.e 2+5 then 10+2 then 15+3) while in KUMON they will give 1+1 1+2 1+3 1+4. It will train us WE CAN because really understand. Not by memorizing it. Sooo when the math gets harder, its no problem for me. Coz i already know the concept.. and kumon not only give us FORMULAS (like pythagoras, algebra, etc).. they even explain how the formula was created.. hope my review helps.. i was 8th grade started from B grade and i graduated from kumon at 10th grade at level Q. It needs 2 years and 2 months to pass that 25 levels. But my friend needs 5 years to complete and another student needs 10 years.. good & bad side if you are not commited enough.. 😅

If a 14 year old hasn't learned their times tables or fractions well, what's the chance they will learn by focusing on deeper understanding of the material? 0%? 0.000001% ? Also, if a 14 year old does know the foundations really well, a lot of them simply don't have the time to understand the material at a deeper level, unless they neglect their other ten school subjects, because deep understanding takes a lot of time to develop: time they do not have. I would say that deeper understanding *really* starts at A Level, when they have more proportion of time in their week to study maths by themselves.

Thanx for sharing. 1. The only way to learn any topic in math well is by understanding it. Anything beyond that is memorization, which is incredibly ineffective long term. 2. Math can teach people many things in life, one of which includes time management skills. Instead of viewing limited time as a stumbling block, it should be viewed as an opportunity to improve time management, efficiency under pressure and the ability to prioritize. No one is born with these skills and math can be one of the best ways to build them.

There are many studies suggesting that the faster you can recall your times tables, the faster you can learn more advanced topics without getting hung up on recalling your times tables- meaning you can spend your time and efforts focusing on the harder topics. This is not "ineffective long term". This is necessary long-term, if you actually want to succeed in maths. And I'm not sure what you mean by, "math can teach you time management skills". How exactly? Can you give an example of how you prioritise in maths?

The best advice I can give is to, first, find a way to fit it all in your schedule. Use this challenge as a way to improve your time management. If you can't find a way to fit it all in, tell them exactly how you feel (in the most respectful way possible) and show them how you tried to fit Kumon into your life. The effort you put into abiding by what they want will show them that you value their opinion and will, hopefully, help them value your opinion and feelings about Kumon. xX

Kumon is not that expensive where I live but cheaper is not always bad just like more expensive doesn't always mean better either. I feel for those under grade 4 hiring a tutor is not a good return on investment though.

I am a Kumon Instructor in the UK and have worked successfully over the past ten years with many children with learning challenges, including ADHD, Aspergers, and also Down's Syndrome and other quite severe learning difficulties. Both Kumon maths and English can work very successfully for these children, as we individualise the study plan for each child's specific needs and abilities.

Kumon is unfortunately protected by Copyright laws and it is illegal to produce copies of Kumon worksheets. Have you tried contacting other Kumon centres in your area to see if they charge less?

Hi Karen! I would suggest it for children who are young and just starting out in math. It can help build their foundation and overall knowledge about math. However, I would not suggest it for a child who is struggling in mathematics, regardless of their age, because it does not do the job of a tutor, whose aim is to help children struggling in math.

I know this comment comes very late, but I hope it will be helpful to others who find this video. When considering Kumon, you need to think about your goals for your child. Kumon will not likely help your child who may be failing Maths to pass their exams in the next two months because it's not a short-term solution. Kumon students usually start the programme below their grade level, not because they can't do the work, but because we teach them to think differently and start developing self-learning skills. Kumon is less about WHAT a child learns and more about HOW they learn. As a result of starting at a point where they comfortably understand the work, they generally only reach their grade level within 6 months to a year (and then they can progress further than their grade level). We also don't cover every single topic in Maths. We cover core topics that form the foundation for everything else students learn in Maths at school. I hope you found the help you needed!

As a Kumon instructor, I can tell you that any age is a good age to start Kumon, depending on your goals for your child. The age of 5 or 6 is the perfect age to start developing strong foundations for school and life. I hope you found the right centre for you or will still consider Kumon if you haven't pursued it yet!
