Kumbalangi in Ernakulam district ( Kerala State )has come a long way in transforming itself from a tiny island to a model fishing village and thereby a popular tourist spot.
The first eco-tourism village in India, Kumbalangi is surrounded by backwaters and is situated 15 km from Kochi city. To strike a balance between tourism and the ecosystem, the village has been preserved in such a way that you can see Nature in its essence here.
Sea sparkle or bioluminescence, locally known as ‘kavaru’ is a unique attraction along the backwaters of Kumbalangi. The ‘magical glow’ is caused by the high concentration of a micro-plankton called Noctiluca Scintillans in the sea. Sea sparkle is likely to happen during the period after the rains, in the months of September and October.
However, the fisherfolk are not amused by the sea sparkle. When the sea lights up an area of the backwaters, fish move out, resulting in poor catch!
The light emanated by micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae creates this natural phenomenon. It can be compared to light produced by thousands of fireflies simultaneously.
The sea sparkle can be seen in the south-western region of Kumbalangi, Kallanchery, Anjilithara, Attathadom, and Kulakkadavu. More mesmerising images can be spotted in isolated regions.

A Spectacular Display Of Bioluminescence In Kochi Backwaters
The sea is a magical place. It’s full of surprises and wonders, but nothing compares to the breathtaking sight of bioluminescence. Kumbalangi Kavaru, a small fishing village in Kochi,Kerala, has been in the spotlight recently for its enchanting sea sparkle phenomenon.
Basically, sea sparkle or bioluminescence is a fancy term for a party of microscopic creatures like bacteria, fungi, and algae who can’t stop shining. It’s like having a rave party in the ocean with thousands of fireflies lighting up the water simultaneously! This natural show can be spotted in different parts of India, but Kumbalangi Kavaru is one of the select few places where you can witness it in all its glory.
With a population of over 1 lakh, Kumbalangi is home to farmers, labourers, fishermen, coir spinners and toddy tappers. The main occupation of the villagers is fishing and there are over 100 Chinese fishing nets dotting the backwaters facing the village.
An array of mangroves that separate land from water provides a good breeding ground for prawns, crabs, oysters and small fish. Bait fishing near the mangroves is popular among tourists. Poomeen Chattam, the movement of a group of fish in half circle during high tide, is a visual delight that you will enjoy.
The village is rich in vast green vegetation consisting of big trees such as mango and jackfruit and also shrubs and grass.

''കവര് പൂത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്, കൊണ്ടോയി കാണിക്ക്''; എന്ന് ബോണിയോട് ബോബി പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അതു കേട്ട പ്രേക്ഷകരും ഒന്നു ചെവി കൂർപ്പിച്ചു. എന്താണീ കവരെന്ന് ചിലർ തമ്മില്‍ തമ്മിലും മറ്റു ചിലർ ആത്മഗതമായും ചോദിച്ചു. നിലാവു പൂത്ത രാത്രിയിൽ ബോണി പെണ്‍സുഹൃത്തിനെ ഒപ്പം കൂട്ടി കവരു കാണാൻ പോകുന്നതും ആ നീലവെള്ളം അവൾ ഉള്ളംകയ്യിൽ കോരിയെടുക്കുന്നതും കുമ്പളങ്ങിയിലെ മനോഹരമായ ഫ്രെയിമുകളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്.

ബയോലൂമിനസെന്‍സ് എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസത്തെ ആണ് ഇവിടെ 'കവര്' എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നത് . ബാക്ടീരിയ, ആല്‍ഗ, ഫംഗസ് പോലുള്ള സൂക്ഷ്മ ജീവികള്‍ പ്രകാശം പുറത്തുവിടുന്ന പ്രതിഭാസമാണ് ബയോലൂമിനസെന്‍സ്. ‘തണുത്ത വെളിച്ചം’ എന്നും ഇതിനെ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാറുണ്ട്. പ്രകാശത്തിനൊപ്പം ചൂട് പുറത്തുവിടാത്തതിനാലാണത്.
ഇതേ പ്രതിഭാസം തന്നെയാണ് മിന്നാമിനുങ്ങ് പ്രകാശം പുറപ്പെടുവിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനു പിന്നിലെ കാരണവും. ചെങ്കടലിന്റെ ചുവപ്പുനിറത്തിനു കാരണവും
നമുക്കിത് അത്ഭുതവുംകൗതുകവുമൊക്കെയാണെങ്കിലും ഇവയ്ക്ക് അത് പ്രതിരോധമാർഗം കൂടിയാണ്. ഇണയേയും ഇരയേയും ആകര്‍ഷിക്കാനും ശത്രുക്കളില്‍ നിന്നു രക്ഷപ്പെടാനുമൊക്കെ സൂക്ഷ്മ ജീവികള്‍ ഈ വെളിച്ചം ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്താറുണ്ട്. ചില ജീവികളില്‍ ഇവ കാണണമെങ്കില്‍ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ഭക്ഷണമോ മറ്റേതെങ്കിലും ജീവിയോ ഉണ്ടാവണം.
കടലിനോടു ചേർന്നുള്ള കായൽപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ് ബയോലൂമിനസെന്‍സ് എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസം കൂടുതലായും കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഈ ജീവികൾ മനുഷ്യന് ഉപകാരപ്രദമാകും എന്നതു സംബന്ധിച്ച് ഗവേഷണം നടന്നുവരികയാണ്.
