I never knew how many options i had with my KUN. I have been so uncomfortable with my shoulder rest and thought that i needed a new one because it affects my playing, making vibrato impossible. Once I saw this video, I adjusted it and it became perfect. My playing got 10 times better from watching this video. Thank you so much!!!

Thank you so much for helping me out! I have had issues for about a year on my Kun on lengths and realized the lady that set up my Kun at the store had the feet backwards, forcing me to put an extraordinary amount of pressure on the shoulder rest to keep it in place! I thought I had a weirdly long neck or something and considered buying a new shoulder rest, but now I don't have to worry about trying on new shoulder rests and such! Thank you so much for your guidance, you have resolved my issues!

I can not thank you enough for this. My son started with a Kun, but it never felt right to him, so we tried NUMEROUS shoulder rests. He is short necked, but broad shouldered. I used this method and voila - he suddenly has good posture. The swivel was the icing on the cake. I had no idea it was supposed to swivel. And his teacher never told him. Thank you so much. This has made such a huge difference. His teacher was always on him about his posture but now I realize he was fighting against his set up.

SDean111 , you made my entire week! I LOVE hearing stories like this where my videos made a difference to somebody. It's amazing how seemingly small adjustments can have big impact--that's as true of tone and intonation as it is of things like posture. I predict your son will make faster progress now, since he's not working against the shoulder rest.

Good lord, thank you so much. I am reasonably new to playing and only bought a Kun rest recently to play properly. Have been complaining to myself for a few weeks now that it's not doing what I thought it would do as well as I thought it would do it. Having watched your video I realized that I have had everything ass backwards. I wasn't even using the long screw (mine came with 2 short 1 long) and I didn't realized it swiveled while on my shoulder. Wonderful! Thanks

I’ve wanted to learn violin for many years, and was recently gifted a violin made by Johann Padewet. As a beginner, I was struggling with placement on my shoulder and since the grips of shoulder rest it came with were deteriorated, my teacher loaned one to me, however it did not fit my body. Three weeks in to lessons, I had to take it to a luthier for reinsertion of the sound post, and while there, I tried 3 or 4 shoulder rests; I purchased the most comfortable one, made by Tido, (I still hope to someday get a Bonmusica). After several weeks of practicing with the new Tido semi-adjusted, (still not comfortable), I came across your video and watched the demo with the Kun rest, which is very much like my Tido with the various adjust-ability. THANK YOU, I see now what was missing in my adjustments, and it fits me so much better. Not perfect, but way better. Being a lefty and playing like a righty, I am struggling with many things, so getting the placement of the violin comfortable will ease my list of frustrations greatly. Also, you’re a good teacher, as I’ve seen several of your videos. Thanks again. Pura Vida.

Thank you so much for your demonstration. I only started taking lessons approximately two months ago and I never knew what the apparatus in one of the compartments in my case was for until I got a little inquisitive and figured out it was a shoulder rest. My husband gifted it to me. Your video made it so simple for me to figure out and believe it or not I put it on correctly on my own. Beginners luck! I am a shorty also and I am much more comfortable using this shoulder rest! I was never able to hold the violin with just propping it under my face but now I can hold it there without it slipping and me needing to hold my hands under my instrument so it doesn't drop to the floor. I can't believe the difference with having the shoulder rest attached to my violin!

@RedDesertViolin12 жыл бұрын
You are welcome, I'm glad it helped! There is SO much "fine tuning" involved in getting just the right set-up. Focus on the pain, and then focus on what makes it go away! Hilary Hahn had a GREAT tip: If your chin rest gouges your jaw, put vaseline on your jaw where it hurts, then hold your violin up. The vaseline will mark the part of the chin rest that is causing the pain, and you can pad it, sand it, or fine a chin rest that doesn't have the sharp edge that hurts you!

Thank you SO much. I've recently started learning again, after a five-year hiatus when my kids were little, and I was finding the violin so uncomfortable on my shoulder. I tried everything - moving the shoulder rest this way and that, but it still felt so insecure and uncomfortable. I watched your video, and discovered the screws were the wrong way around. I put the long screw on the 'skinny' end...et viola!! What an epiphany! My aching shoulder and jaw thank you!! And no more slipping...THANKS

If you adjusted your Kun the way I demonstrated in this video, and you are utilizing the "tilt" to your advantage....then you might need a different shoulder rest. (see my extensive video on the Bon Musica) But before you go out and buy one, you might benefit from a better chin rest? check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmTEgmetgJ5pb6M . It is SO important to get a good fit for beginners! Good luck to you!

Back in the day when I was 'very young,' after being extensively tested by two different college level PHD Professors my parents were told, "your son is 'gifted' he has 'Perfect Pitch!" Both Professors recommended to my folks I should be playing a 'stringed' instrument so I began sawing away on my Violin at the tender age of 'Three,' I'm still playing today at 'Sixty One,' in all my years of sawing away I have 'never' used 'any kind' of "Shoulder Rest" of any kind and have never felt I didn't have complete control of my Violin, yes I've tried them but have never owned or needed one! Am I too old to learn why most all others use them configured in one way or another? I wish all of y'all that use them continued beautiful melodies. : )

Very helpful lesson! You could mention (it turns up in the Comments below) that KUN makes an extra-long foot (1.5") that can be ordered separately from the shoulder rest.
@RedDesertViolin14 жыл бұрын
@chet31BP Chet--people who are in favor of NOT using shoulder rest DO rest the violin on their collarbone. Many people find this painful or awkward. However, plenty of people learn to do it. Regarding the chinrest...they can only go so high, so the more important thing to look for in a chin rest is to find one that fits comfortably with your jaw, for minimum "sore spots". If you find that you need more height, it would come from a shoulder rest, not from a chin rest.
@MissRaynen12 жыл бұрын
This video is great! I can't wait to try it tomorrow. I've had mine for a day and it gave me massive neck and shoulder pain. I think it's because the shoulder rest is on top of my shoulder and not "hooking" the shoulder and testing on the rest. I didn't even know it swiveled. My teacher recommended the Kun and I think I've got the screw length opposite so the skinny one is too short and the fat side for the shoulder is too high. Thank you and I hope all goes well tomorrow when I try it!
@JSB2500 Жыл бұрын
My setup is EXACTLY the same as yours, in every detail. It took me a LOT of "noodling" around to find it, and it seemed hopeless at times, but having found it I literally haven't touched it for a year. Of course, I wish I'd found your video back then to save me that time and frustration, but at least I can endorse your good advice. For me, the attachment points on the violin are so critical I've put tiny secret dots on the violin so that I can quickly clip the shoulder rest on accurately. Not a good idea on an expensive violin of course. I think I'd take a photograph of the setup with my phone in that case.

THIS IS GREAT ADVICE....I WISH I HAD SAID THIS IN THE VIDEO. I also wish I could pin this comment to the top so others can benefit from it. My browser doesn't let me pin things.

Hey Trenton I think your 2 best options are: The "Bon Musica" shoulder rest. Those go really really tall, and most taller people seem to favor them. I used one for awhile, and LOVED it, but eventually gave it up because for short people, the "hook" can actually get in the way on the G string. The other option is to seek out a taller CHIN rest, which you can use with the Kun or with the Bon Musica. I would start there, because regardless of what shoulder rest you choose, chin rest needs 2btaller.

I think another thing worth mentioning is the shape of the chinrest, which I think should take priority over the shoulder rest. For someone like me with a rather squarish jaw, a more tilted chinrest (higher near the tailpiece, lower on the bass side) helps prevent the chinrest from digging in at the edge of the jaw. Until a good match with the chinrest is found, an otherwise good angle or tilt for the violin can feel uncomfortable.

I am a performer/teacher and can't handle faulty equipment. The only way I know of letting KUNS know what's what is by letting violinist know how awful these feet are. The old style, surgical tubing over metal worked well, you just had to replace the tubing once every 5 yrs. or so. Thanks

Yes, I'm not saying that you have to keep your violin at that angle. Of course, you can adjust and raise or lower it to fit your own taste. When I'm in the middle of a long opera run, playing in the pit for 6 hours per day, I relax my posture and angle to a more "casual" angle. But, EVERY time a very difficult passage approaches, you can see the entire violin section sit up, and their violins go to the higher angle. It's easier to nail hard passages at that angle! --L

Hey Dale, man, I faked my way through a wedding gig, faking like I could play viola. And what did I learn? I learned that just because you play violin doesn't automatically mean you can play viola. Sorry, but I can't fake teach viola, or I would LOVE to give you viola lessons! Let me just add this, though: everything I teach on violin applies to viola. The only difference is of course the clef, and the thickness of the strings, and the lower register. That means, slower string response, and slightly wider vibrato. That's IT. So all my violin lessons should still help you.

You have a few options for the collarbone syndrome! 1) Push your shoulder rest CLOSER to the tailpiece. This will raise the violin off your collarbone, but could create other instability. You'll have to work with it, change the tilt, and stuff. 2) add a nice pad or sponge to your routine, and place it over your collarbone before playing. OR, you can make a pad that buttons right onto your violin button, which makes it easier to manage.

Ook! [I had terrible times reaching the G-string - couldn't even use my 4th finger and the rest of the fingers hurt badly after practice. Today, i've switched to KUN and also replaced my chin rest. The difference made me cry.]

I know! THe relief can be so profound it does make us emotional! You might also search for my video about "Playing violin with short arms".....even if you aren't short.....it talks about the tilt of the violin, and I have a feeling you might benefit from it. Good luck!

I wasn´t sure if I should use a Shoulder rest or not until you helped me setup my Kun. Now it´s comfortable. I can even walk around in my home with my violin on my shoulder without any strains. Best regards from Sweden

And, if you want ORGANIZED, systemmatic help, consider my online beginner's violin course. Keep up the great work! --Lora

Hi there! Is the shoulder rest in the video a Kun Original? It looks so good cause the left end of the rest can stick out far pass the screw. This can really hook on the shoulder. Btw, can Kun Bravo stick out that far? It seems like the Bravo design cant stick out that far.

I guess one question I may have now is how exactly should the violin sit on my shoulder? I seem to have a tough time getting it to be "flat". It tends to want to sit with a real lean on it. It's also difficult to get it to a point where I feel like I don't have to contort my bow arm to keep the bow perpendicular to the strings. I guess the question is, should be aiming to have the violin stuck out beside me, or more sort of 45 degrees from the center of my chest (if that makes sense). Thanks!
