A little bit of a background about the song. It is originally a folksong used by the revolutionaries during the Himagsikan in which a certain version was arranged by Maestro Lucino Buenaventura of Baliwag for his band, La Banda de Baliwag to cheer up the Bulakenyo revolutionaries in the Sierra Madre in 1896. Buenaventura was close friends with Isabelo delos Reyes who believed to be the one who rendered the lyrics for the song which was meant for Maria Josefa Tiongson y Lara or otherwise known as Jocelynang Baliwag.

I studied classical guitar under Prof Manuel Pellicer(a known rival of the arranger of this piece) in the 80s as a HS student. This arrangement was in the key of G. On the other hand, my mentor's arrangement was in the key of A. And the title was Lumang Kundiman of 1850, composer anonymous.

Ian's Philippine Music Archive I believe you are correct, but unfortunately that's what the book said (incorrectly) and the title is burned into my video. I've seen this piece titled Kundiman 1850 so perhaps that's the correct one? Please let me know. Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken you got the wrong title from Florante Aguilar. His guitar rendition of this Kundiman song has the same wrong title[i.e., "Kundiman 1850"]. Likewise he has been writing wrong information about the Kundiman. With regards to the correct title, here is what Dr. Antonio C. Hila, Associate Professor of the History Department of De La Salle University wrote in his book "Music in History, History in Music" p.18: "The kundiman that has become the favorite song among the Katipuneros was "Jocelynang Baliwag". This was called the "Kundiman of the Revolution"... The printed score was found among the old worn-out paper of the Orquestra Molina of Don Antonio Molina. Stated on the score is the following: "Musica de Legitimo Kundiman Procedente del Campo Insurrecto" (Music of the Legitimate Kundiman that Proceeds from the Insurgent's Camp). Ref. Molina, Antonio J. Ang Kundiman ng Himagsikan. Manila: Bureau of Printing, 1940. So the correct title is a long one and it has no date. I wonder where Florante Aguilar got the year 1850? The correct title only said that this kundiman "proceeds from the Insurgent's Camp". Are there any Insurgent's camp in 1850? Bonifacio and Aguinaldo were not even born yet in 1850! The fact is the original manuscript of Jocelynang Baliwag does not contain a year so let us not invent one. Salamat po!

Ian's Philippine Music Archive I've seen it titled Kundiman 1850 in several places, not just Florante's. As I said, the book containing the score I used says Kundiman 1800 (which is obviously incorrect). Honestly, we don't really have a lot of good sources of information on our traditional and historical music which frustrates me a lot. You seem to have an encycopledic knowledge of our music (or least know some sources) so I appreciate your comments/clarifications when one is called for. Thanks.

***** : When the late master music arranger Leopoldo Silos recorded his orchestral rendition of "Jocelynang Baliuag" under Villar [MARECO] records sometime during the late 50's it was entitled "Kundiman 1850". I guess the said recording was the origin of the mistake. Silos and Manuel Villar were neither historians or musicologist [the same with Florante Aguilar] hence their knowledge about the nature and history of the Kundiman is limited or unreliable. However, as early as 1940 Antonio Molina already published his monograph on "Jocelynang Baliuag" entitled "Ang Kundiman Ng Himagsikan" ( as mentioned previously and I do have a copy of the manuscript) which explains the origin and the true title of the kundiman erroneously referred to nowadays as "Kundiman 1850". Please note that Jocelynang Baliuag is called "Legitimo Kundiman" or legitimate/GENUINE kundiman even though so-called genuine Kundiman "FORMULA" is absent. Florante Aguilar further explains about this so-called "formula": "The 'formula' is verse 1 on minor key (e.g. C Minor) followed by verse 2 on parallel major key (C Major) midway through. This is INTRACTABLE. Stray from this formula, and you NO longer have a kundiman." [F. Aguilar, "The Difference Between Harana and Kundiman]. Therefore, based on Aguilar's reasoning "Jocelynang Baliuag", the "Legitimo Kundiman" is not a Kundiman! Bahala na po kayo kung sino ang inyong paniniwalaan. Salamat po!

I don't mean to be rude, but your translation of "Música del Legítimo Kundiman Procedente del Campo Insurrecto" as "Music of the Legitimate Kundiman that Proceeds from the Insurgent's Camp" is far too literal, which is common to people who either do not speak Spanish or speak Spanish as a second or third language. A closer translation would be "Authentic Kundiman Music of the Insurrectionists". ("Campo Insurrecto" does not necessarily refer to an actual camp; it can simply refer to the insurrectionists themselves.) Hence, the Kundiman referred to did not have to be composed or come from the insurrectionist's camp or their time period, it could simply be a song that was popular among them at the time and was later associated with them, that is, "their side" ("the insurrectionists' side" / "del Campo Insurrecto"). This leaves the possibility that the music was composed before the Revolution but was popular during the Revolution because of the sentiments expressed in the song. Consider, for example, "Bayan Ko" (originally "Nuestra Patria" and attributed to General José Alejandrino by Arsenio Lizaso ) was composed either in the late 19th Century or in the first half of the 20th Century, when Alejandrino was alive, yet it was later translated (by José Corazón de Jesús), adopted to music (by Constancio de Guzmán) and became the theme of the EDSA Revolution in 1986, long after the American occupation ended (i.e. when it was first composed). The same thing could have happened with Jocelynang Baliwag, wherein it was composed in the first half of the 19th Century, but was later adopted by the Kutipuneros. With this in mind, "Kundiman de 1800" could be a reference to the century it was composed or if it's "Kundiman de 1850", then it could a reference to the specific decade it was composed. This is not completely impossible, just because Bonifacio and Aguinaldo were not born yet because no one really knows when the Kundiman first developed. We know from Rizal, Alejandrino, Baltazar and Pedro Paterno's poetry that the Kundiman was around long before the Katipunan was even established or conceived of. We also know from their work that the Kundiman was not necessarily in Tagalog, but also in Spanish, as was the case with "Nuestra Patria" (Alejandrino) , "Kundiman" (Paterno), and "A Orillas del Pasig" (Rizal). This is not surprising considering that the Kundiman developed during Spanish times. You can even hear evidence of the Spanish influence through the Habanera rhythm in Kundimans, such as "Mawala Mang Lahat" and Haranas, like "Awit Ko'y Dinggin", "O Ilaw", Dungawin Mo Hirang", etc. and, of course, you can hear that Spanish influence in the instruments used, like the Spanish guitar, the bandurria, the octavina, and the laúd. It is not wholly impossible that Jocelynang Baliwag was composed at an earlier date in Spanish times, considering that the genre was already popular among the Ilustrados, before they even left for Spain. I'm not saying you're wrong, but you shouldn't dismiss the possibility that it was composed at an earlier date. I agree with you, however, that "1800" or "1850" should be left out, until it can be confirmed. A better or more accurate title would be "Kundiman del Siglo XIX" (Kundiman of the 1800s or Kundiman of the 19th Century). At the very least, we know that it was popular in the 1800s. It would be great if you could provide a link to the original copy of the sheet music or the book you're referring to, so that I can read the original Spanish. There may be some clues there that historians missed. Unfortunately, most Filipinos no longer speak Spanish, and so there are so many cases of overly literal translations, even among historians, that causes misunderstandings. I see it all the time, especially when I read English and Tagalog translations of Rizal's poetry. Have a great day and thank you for sharing! That was very insightful information you provided.
