Circa 1970, our priests optimistically foresaw a time when China would transform its image of martial arts from the nationalized dancing called "wushu" back towards traditional arts, and attempt to restore credibility to a Buddhist Temple ethic. But they also doubted that China in the twentieth century would truly welcome the return of the monk order called "Shaolin" in the North, and "Sil Lum" in the South. Our Order and all that its monks stand for, as pointers towards self-fulfillment and liberation, are in diametric opposition to the dictates of Stalin, Mao and other tyrants. We doubt that China in the twenty-first century will truly welcome the return of the Shaolin Order, either. Too much is at stake for the People's Republic of China (PRC), in terms of both money and that ubiquitous Confucian practice of saving face. There are various stories coming out of China today referring to the history of Shaolin, particularly over the past 300 years. Many of these stories are suspect, with the more commonly "authenticated" versions coming from government records. (Compare Chinese accounts of the events at Tiananmen Square with BBC or any other news coverage. There is very little agreement between the accounts.) The fact that Chinese authorities persecuted Buddhists, Shaolin and martial artists makes any story about Shaolin history from the PRC suspect. The currently prevalent sport of martial arts-like choreography called "wushu" originated as a result of a compromise between the post-World War 2 government's desire to suppress genuine martial arts and the national need for, and history of, a martial arts tradition. Modern wushu, was not designed as a martial art (strictly illegal until quite recently) by the Chinese government, but as a national and largely acrobatic art. Claims to the contrary date back only to the early 1970s, following on the popularity of the Kung Fu television [tell lie vision] show. 1949ce Mao Tze Tung establishes China as a communist state; all religions, temples and monks are to be destroyed. Martial arts outlawed and Buddhist practices " "discouraged." 1985ce The Order of Shaolin Ch'an sends a disciple to the Honan Temple to determine if any genunine remnants of Shaolin practice persist there. This representative found no Buddhist or traditional gung fu practice, only Modern wushu and the seeds of a tourist attraction. (Out of support for the old traditional kungfu masters who we're murdered in the cultural revolution by that psychopath Mao Tze Tung. I wouldn't touch modern or contemporary wushu with a ten foot staff. Its the hard core traditional chinese kungfu for me.)
