It wasn't in movies but in another one of this guy's videos, the "Mind, Body and Kick Ass Moves" series over samurai. In the beginning the man's daughter is firing arrows at his chest and he cleaves them with his katana, although one manages to graze his hand which it shows up close afterwards. Not to mention the man on "Ripley's Believe It or Not" that caught arrows traveling over 100mph bare-handed and even blind-folded. You'd be surprised what all is possible for those who try.

Yes the first guy was able to cut those but she was only pulling to about 1/3 or 1/2 draw, making the arrows slower than they should have been. And as for Terry Bryan, he needed perfect silence, lots of practice, and the worlds fastest hands, and even then he only caught it half of the time.

The version of the Japanese Jian is the Tsurugi which is a double edge sword of the 5th century A. D. and the Chokuto, single edge straight sword...

I like how a japanese katana was almost a direct combo of the two swords geometry.

True, but I think a more correct way to put it is "The harder it is, the more brittle it is." You can have different materials which, while being harder, are not more fragile. But otherwise, yeah. It's like the old saying of a small, flexible tree in a storm outlasting the tall, rigid oak.

I agree, even korea had a very similar version of the classic katana style. I also agree with the latter comment. Japan in it's infancy actually used to import all of their swords from china.

they did use jian a long time ago but realized it has it's disadvantages when used on horseback and the fact it cannot really absorb the shock well when slashing full force

Does anyone know the background location of this clip. It is the same that was used in one of the beginning sequences in the Gongfu movie "Dragon Tiger Gate" with Donnie Yen. The place is soooo beautiful.....and by the way... nice documentation ;-)

When people hate you and you try to date their daughters, they tend to do things like that. 1. I got 30yds by doing it w/my compound. The further back you stand the more you have to adjust for wind and gravity. At 30yds under perfect weather conditions the arrow only drops about 1/4in. If you're aiming for an opponent's vitals then much more than that could mean the difference from a kill and being killed yourself. 2. The example was meant to be dodged, not deflected, although either works.

Oh, not much, just 10 years of experience with archery. Before the existance of compound bows, the fastest and strongest bow was the recurve which wasn't available in Japan mind you. At full draw the arrow would max out under 75mph. A car traveling at 200mph can still be seen. Example: An arrow fired to a max height of 100ft traveling at 100mph would take approximately 40.82 seconds to hit the ground/target(thank you physics class). If that's not enough hangtime I don't know what is. a=2d/t^2

It's also probably because they are practice swords. The real ones are more sturdy and best to practice with only when one is skilled enough.

Those aren't sound effects, the jian and dao (their real names) create the "woosh" sounds when they fly through the air. These weapons, when made properly and used properly, are deadly, but beautiful at the same time.

true in close quarters combat these would beat bow and arrows, but someone with a bow and arrow would proabably be able to kill the guy with the sword before he got close enough to use it. my original comment was mostly a poke at the people who think that if you know kung-fu you are invincible.

Although arrows can be deflected or dodged with enough distance between the archer and swordsman.

Well, You want a little flexibility in a blade. The harder it is, the more fragile it is. Too hard, and it'll shatter.

Tis much easier to discuss the physics of arrows when you actually own a bow and can experiment at will. Advantages of living in the South, we have no weapon restrictions ^_^. Explains how I got a 30-06 for my 10th birthday >.>

Well considering it was her dad it kinda makes sense for her to hold back. And yeah, that guy did miss some. Too bad Mythbusters never watched that episode or they wouldnta said that humans cant catch arrows XD. Anyways, in real combat an archer wouldn't be that close to the target, so even at full draw there would still be enough time for the samurai to react, especially considering that at longer ranges the archer aims skywards. It's fairly easy to avoid something with that much hangtime XD.

When there are already videos of people doing this why would I need to? And again, in order to hit the target by firing straight at it the archer must be within 30yds, arcs are meant for longer distances which is exactly what I was talking about. You said there would be no hangtime, yet with arcs there is. Even when firing straight the target would be able to react if they noticed in time. I've already had to dodge angry neighbors with 12 gauges so I've had enough of being a live target.

Not a stupid question. China only started making real swords like two or three years ago. The government went really hard on their own traditions based on some European ideology called communism.

My comment about arrows being to fast to be seen was badly worded, I meant "to be seen and have the reaction time to do something about it." We are talking about two different methods of firing, you're saying fired in an arc, I'm talking about shooting straight at someone. I don't think we'll ever agree on this, so since it's so easy why don't you do it your self, or find some swordsman to do it, and post a video.

"When there are already videos of people doing this why would I need to?" well you're saying that any average swordsman could deflect arrows and I would like to see that proven or disproven, but we don't seem to be getting any where, so I think we should just agree to disagree and move on.

"in real combat an archer wouldn't be that close to the target" uuh, he is the target. At full draw arrows usually go to fast to be seen, there would be no way for an average samurai to dodge or deflect it. and even aimed upwards an arrow does'nt get much "hangtime". You keep saying "in real life", and I'm wondering what you are basing all this on.

well I can't uderstand why anyone would want to shoot you. 1. I don't know where you got a limit of 30 yards. 2. I did the math and an arrow going 100 mph would only be in reach about only 1/42th of a second. And you keep using "if", so I suppose that IF he had great reflexes and IF his sword was ready and IF he noticed something the diamater of a pencil flying at him, then yeah he could deflect it. And I did'nt say no hangtime, I said not much hangtime. I'll continue in the next comment.
