Continuous-cover forestry - a modern version of old-fashioned forestry

Selective cutting, shelterwood regeneration and gap felling are gaining popularity among Swedish forest owners who strive to find alternatives to the predominant clear-cut forestry. This film shows forest owners and contractors performing "clear-cut free" methods of forestry, and their motives. Besides, researchers present what we know about the methods. This is a film originally produced for the Swedish knowledge system Skogskunskap.se (Forestry knowledge). English narrator and English subtitles.

Selective harvesting, shelter-wood and gap felling processes yield less profits on the on set, however the necessary silvicuture costs associated with clear-cutting: seed collection, seedling development, block site prep, tree planting , etc are significant. The discussed alternate harvest processes rely primarily on natural regeneration, and these process would save considerably for sustainability of the stands. Like your KZbin channel; I can only understand the episodes containing English caption's, unfortunately :)

Not to forget the price difference between timber and pulpwood. Usually the selective cutting kind of methods are producing bigger % of timber than pulpwood the rotation time of a clear cut area. Väldigt bra video!

The other consideration to consider is that under a clear cut system, all the profit comes at once, while under CCF the individual payments are less but profits are regularly spread over a longer time frame.

Too much emphasis on the economics of selective cutting forests, not enough emphasis on the ecological aspects. I was concerned to see tree harvesters utilized in selective cutting forests; no word being said on their impact on forest soil.
