Probably the best video on forest management I’ve seen. As a forester who spent the first 22 years of my career working in Northern Ireland, and since 2019 in Southern England (where I grew up), it’s so heartening to see the great strides and innovation continuing to take place in Irish Forestry. I’ve seen first hand all the challenges you refer to, particularly deer here in S England: it is imperative that the deer population in Ireland is not allowed to reach anywhere close to the densities we have in England. There are also challenges of markets for the more varied range of species, although we have a very good local market for large Douglas and larch. I also own a 20ha plantation in Co Antrim that I planted in 2001, so I still maintain a direct interest in what’s going on in Irish forestry. I will watch your future videos with avid interest- this one was a joy to watch: brilliant photography and superb presentation!

I love it, I hope this is the future of all forestry. We're badly in need of an upgrade here.

Access and extraction must be quite a challenge and expensive for what is quite often low value product. CCF was a concept I was interested in (and still am, but sadly I no longer work in forestry), when I was studying forestry back in the 90’s. My honours project was related to site and harvesting factors affecting natural regeneration, albeit regarding Sitka spruce, as that was the resource base I had available to me. I would love to get back into hands on forestry/woodland management but have to be content with spoon carving and sculpting wood from the bits and pieces I can scrounge out of customers’ gardens, and from generous tree surgeons nowadays. Back in the day I used to make charcoal from hardwood thinnings, me and my mate had harvested, self selecting and leaving the best timber trees. We used to peel the oak for the bark for tanning leather, the decent sized pealed lengths were used to make garden structures. Some of the larger sized thinnings we were offered, we would get in a mobile band saw (which took the profit out of the job for us) to cut the logs on site for local projects. It was hard work and great fun but we barely covered our costs when trying to compete on the open market with industrial timber production.

We are slow to adopt new ways of managing our woodlands in Sweden so it is really interesting to learn about the alternatives. Thanks for your effort to bring this information to the public!

Interesting. The 2 highest quality trees he mentions are both endemic to British Columbia. Also the bark beetle!

Hello Julius , Really good to have a channel for more awareness about woods and nature. A way to keep the deer in control is to leave that cut timber on the ground instead of bringing it away. Deer don't like places they can't properly observe and new trees can grow and the saved trees can still get better and bigger.

This is great! I have seen this concept in the wild forests in the east. But then again makkie also wants to build some houses with quality timber;))

If you practice CCF in my opinion you are not allowed to harvest with heavy machines that compress the ground an destroy all smaller roots which are near the surface. It is more sustainable and less destructive to move the wood with horses.

I would agree, but than again, sometimes compromises have to be made to make something work in the system. We probably more more positive impact realising this with heavy machines on a large scale than without it. Overtime when the quality in the forest increases significantly, other harvesting ways become more economical viable though👍
