Glad my Colorado has the G80 locker! Great system.

I have a 1999 Suburban, last spring pulled myself out of some serious mud, about 10-12 inches deep. Just found out last night that it has a G80 on it (spend a lot of time on internet and finally found the RPO codes. Never knew about them before, lol). It explains why this old heavy truck seems like one of the best 4x4's I've had.

My pristine 1998 Volvo AWD V70XC has a G80 Locker on the rear axle. Does a fantastic job, and is the original equipment. Still works good. It has gotten me up some patchy icy steep Colorado roads more than once.

I have a 97 with over 400K and a 2000 with 200K, both with the G80 and haven't had a problem with them.

they should also mention that the other trucks are open diffs. and if they say otherwise they are full of it.my truck with "clutch" posi has made it up all that stuff. cept the rollers, although i would love that.

G80s are badass if you take care of them keep the fluid clean don't do big nasty burn outs on dry pavement they weren't made for that I have blown up one from doing burn outs if you use it like it was intended it's a reliable diff just take care of it
@NinthRay711 жыл бұрын
The whole video is the G80 vs open diffs, except the Yota with the e-locker. Which they showed makes it up the dirt hill when turned on.

I have a GM truck with an open diff, and I want to upgrade, but I'm not sure what to upgrade to. I've had three ZR2 blazers in the past, all with G80s and they've been great. But the new truck has a LOT more power than that old 4.3. It will be much easier to abuse the diff. On the flipside, the Truetrac is "only" an LSD, but it's activation is much faster, and it can handle a lot of power. I don't drive off road much, but you never know what kind of situation you'll find yourself in. I can see many situations where one of these will have an advantage over the other. Too bad Eaton doesn't make a gear based LSD like the Truetrac, that ALSO had a FULL locking feature like the G80!
@Inariusclaimedthethrone6 жыл бұрын
johnnybikesalot the same G80 comes on the v-8 powered z71 silverados, and the diesel duallies too

Dude...Eaton does make the TrueTrac.
@johnnybikesalot3 жыл бұрын
@@Icutmetal Dude... my comment was that I wish they made a diff that was like a truetrac with a fully looking feature like a G80. So instead of being a fully open diff when it was unlocked, it would use the truetrac gearing. Like a locker and an LSD in one. I don't know if something like that would really work because the locker would need to engage long before the truetrac would be slipping by any significant amount. It would be interesting to play around with the concept though.
@jacobvanhalteren74522 жыл бұрын
@@johnnybikesalot you can get an LSD set up for multiple different conditions. rally LSDs are usually set up to engage at 25% slip. while autocross LSDs slip much later around 50-75% slip to allow for better handling. different springs acting on the clutches at different times

Everyone here is bitching about how the G80's explode after a short period of time when used hard... my GMC has 286000 km's and has never had a problem with the rear end or locker and I put it to the test quite often. Maintenance is key people.

Hey I love the explanation.. Really good job... So I gotta ask I am searching to find out if my 2000 GMC SIERRA has a locker and I came across this video... I do have the GT4, and G80 RPO codes in my glove box. Do I have an EATON LOCKER? Thanks in advance.

It's probably ok if you gently off road you truck like in the video. If you're gonna beat on your vehicle it most likely won't hold up. There's little gear teeth that can wear and shear off. Then it probably won't work and it'll make a chattering squeaky noise.

ok heres my stupid question... why does the right front tire spin on these 4WHEEL DRIVE vehicles when going up the slope on the rollers?? Shouldnt both front wheels be pulling?
@naplesnative23946 жыл бұрын
TheMightybasstone , no cause they all come equipped with an "open differential". Anyone could then install a locker both front or rear.
@Inariusclaimedthethrone6 жыл бұрын
Open diff makes the power follow the path of least resistance, that’s why only the tires on the rollers pull
@glennmanchester53352 жыл бұрын
They never do the front and back are open diffs and will send power to the wheel w least resistance which is stupid yes

Who honestly cares about saving one second or less? I used to have a chevy 2wd with a locker in the rear, now i have a ford 4x4 with stand diffs. Just about the same in 2wd. Chevy was a little better, but nothing extreme. As for 4x4 in the ford, obviously that's an unfair comparison so i wont even mention that.

Why would a limited slip be .worse than a g80

Hi I think my car has the g80 locker in the rear. I hear it engage and disengage. I have a 1997 Volvo S90 2.9L inline 6. The sticker on the chassis says 1055 3.73's. The right rear mud flap thing on the chassis says 9169231 RH and the other side says 9157651 LH. Do I have the G80 locker?
@l337pwnage8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel McDaniels Well, you had me curious, so here: www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Driveline.html#AutomaticLockingDifferential Yup, you probably have a "G80", except Volvo calls it the "ALD". "G80" is just a GM RPO code. I also found one site that says your type 1055 is an Eaton locker. www.justanswer.com/car/10ti5-volvo-s-960-s-sedan-wagon-limetedslip.html
@danielmcdaniels2958 жыл бұрын
+l337pwnage Ok now which gear lube do i use? The book says 80w90. In Nuturel the right rear wheel spins faster then the other. Its that how the locker works off the ground?

Well, if it is any consolation, G80's tend to be weaker than axles. I'm not sure if that is on purpose, but it would make sense from a liability standpoint.
@jacobvanhalteren74522 жыл бұрын
Well if consider most aftermarket diff still end up blowing up when the axles snap, its probably a good thing

I believe this video is misleading. I don't believe any of the competition trucks (Ford, Dodge or Toyota had any posi-traction in their vehicles at all. This video merely compared Chevrolet Eaton to open face one wheel fire axles. Anything with any kind of anti-slip rear end would have showed some lock-up, not tires spinning to the point that they wouldn't be able to climb the roller hill demonstration. Shame on this demo, and I am a Chevy man, but I like the truth.

Limited slip is useless if one wheel is at zero traction. That is kind of a safety feature if you hit a patch of ice.

depends on the LSD type of differential. for example; the Detroit locker will deliver power to the opposing wheel even if the other wheel is off the ground.
