Ivana Kupala- summer solstice holiday in Ukraine. It has an ancient history. The night of Ivan Kupala is filled with rituals associated with water, fire and herbs.Closer to sunset, bonfires were lit on hills or near rivers. On the night of Ivan Kupala, "betrothed" were chosen and marriage rites were performed: jumping over the fire holding hands, exchanging wreaths (a wreath is a symbol of virginity), searching for a fern flower and bathing in the morning dew.

Thank you so much for reacting!🙏💕 Yes, goosebumps every time listening to this song) The chorus is an actual Ukrainian folk song! The girls (Jerry Heil and Alyona) made it their goal to spread Ukrainian traditional music across Europe and beyond👍 It was very interesting to learn that it sounds similar to singing from Spain! And the background video is a film ‘Vechir na Ivana Kupala’ (‘Ivana Kupala night’) that was produced by Dovzhenko studio in Ukraine in the 60s (btw the film is free and available on KZbin if you’d like to give it a watch, just know that it was filmed in soviet times so it’s a bit weird if you know what I mean:). Because the holiday is ancient and pagan there are a lot of mystic rituals and beliefs involved (like purification by fire, water, and searching for that magical fern flower in the woods). Definitely all the aspects of the song and video and all the meanings are hard to get if you’re not from Ukraine but hope you enjoyed the music! 💙💛

@@princeblworld there are a lot of excellent music groups in Ukraine, you can choose according to your taste. If you like rock, listen to Karna, Oсean Elsa, or The Hardkiss. If you like groovy songs to dance we have Monatik. If you want a mix of folk and modern sound I I can advise Kazka, Alina Pash, Odin v kanoe. As for Alyona Alyona, she is a legend of Ukrainian rap. Listen to her other songs, and songs by Kalush, if you like this genre. Thank you for such a sincere review of our culture! It is especially important for Ukraine that the world hears us now ♥♥

The song reproduces the motifs of traditional songs that are performed on the feast of Ivan Kupala. Kupala Night, also called Ivana-Kupala is a traditional Slavic holiday that was originally celebrated on the shortest night of the year, in Eastern Slavic countries according to traditional Julian calendar on the night between 6 to 7 July (Ukraine). The name of the holiday was originally Kupala; a pagan fertility rite later adapted into the Orthodox Christian calendar by connecting it with St. John's Day. The celebration relates to the summer solstice when nights are the shortest and includes a number of Slavic rituals. It involves herb collecting, bonfire lighting, and bathing in the river. There is an anciant Kupala belief that the eve of Ivan Kupala is the only time of the year when ferns bloom. Prosperity, luck, discernment and power befall whoever finds a fern flower. Therefore, on that night, village folk roam through the forests in search of magical herbs, and especially, the elusive fern flower.

And also wanted to add, that the song is actually about Ukraine and figuratively about war - Alyona is rapping that her power is where the rivers flow and wild flowers bloom (in Ukraine) and no matter how hard it is the water ‘will bring me back to you’ (to Ukraine). Jerry Heil sings ‘don’t look for the magical fern flower in the deep dark woods, because it’s planted in your heart by the ancestors’ (figuratively feel a Ukrainian heart in you, keep Ukrainian traditions). When the ‘monster’ comes, don’t give him the flower’ - figuratively ‘don’t let russia destroy our traditions’. And Ela sings ‘your wounds will be healed’ - it’s about hope for Ukraine and it’s future🇺🇦 I also think that the scene of a woman fleeing the horsemen with a child in tow is a reference to all the mothers and children refugees fleeing russian invasion💔 hope it makes sense!🙏

The feast of Ivanа Kupala is one of the ancient, pre-Christian holidays of the Eastern Slavs, a traditional Old Slavic holiday. On this holiday, the girls run away from the boys to the water in order to bewitch the beauty. They collect flowers and weave wreaths and than take out candles, light them and, attaching them to their wreaths, let them go on the water. While the wreaths float, the girls walk across the river and sing. And which of the guys finds the girl's wreath is counted as her fate. And as for the flower that is sung about in the song, it is a fern flower. There is a belief about the flower of the fern, which supposedly appears on the night of Kupala. According to legend, the fern blooms only for one brief moment on the shortest night of the year before Ivanа Kupala Day. It is quite difficult to get this flower, because it is protected from people by an evil force. Only a young guy, often unmarried or the only son in the family, can look for her. The one who has a fern flower will allegedly receive the gift of insight into the future and the ability to understand the language of animals and birds, learn about the fate of people, heal the sick, and can find treasures hidden in the ground.

Hi) Ivanа-Kupala, is a traditional Slavic holiday that was originally celebrated on the shortest night of the year, which is on 21-22 or 23-24 of June. Many of the rites related to this holiday are connected with the role of water in fertility and ritual purification. This is due to the ancient Kupala rites. On Kupala day, young people jump over the flames of bonfires in a ritual test of bravery and faith. The failure of a couple in love to complete the jump, while holding hands, is a sign of their destined separation. Girls may float wreaths of flowers (often lit with candles) on rivers, and attempt to gain foresight into their romantic relationship fortune from the flow patterns of the flowers on the river. Men may attempt to capture the wreaths, in the hope of capturing the interest of the woman who floated it. There is an ancient Kupala belief that the eve of Ivan Kupala is the only time of the year when ferns bloom. Prosperity, luck, discernment, and power befall whoever finds a fern flower. Therefore, on that night, village folk roam through the forests in search of magical herbs, and especially, the elusive fern flower.

these are fragments from "Ukrainian poetic cinema" film - «Вечір на Івана Купала». when I was a student, I had to do some research about this cinema school. "Ukrainian Poetic Cinema" brought "haptic visual" to cinematography, in addition, it is distinguished by surrealism, significant interesting things in technical aspects. you can read more about it in JJ Gurda's ECHOES OF THE PAST: UKRAINIAN POETIC CINEMA AND THE EXPERIENTIAL ETHNOGRAPHIC MODE. he explores the technical features and what they were needed for (in general, it was an attempt to heal generational trauma and work with post-memory)
