I wouldn't say it's a complete betrayal to the original source material or Dr. Seuss's work in general. It did, for the most part, follow the main storyline of the original book: beginning with Sally & Conrad being stuck indoors on a rainy day with nothing to do, the Cat in the Hat shows up to invite them to have some fun with some slight mischief here and there, the house winds up wrecked, Sally & Conrad angrily tell the Cat in the Hat to leave, Sally & Conrad fear impending punishment from their mom, the Cat in the Hat returns to fix the house with another one of his wacky machines, and then it ends with the Cat in the Hat and Sally & Conrad saying good-bye on good terms. It aint easy turning a children's short story into a feature-length film. Extra scenes needed to be added in. It could've been better, but I enjoy this movie all the same.
