I love it because Kurama and Hiei are not peers/contemporaries; Hiei probably grew up hearing about the legendary Yoko Kurama, but over time, intense admiration and fanboy levels of praise for Yoko turned into genuine respect and friendship for the Kurama we know. I think Hiei doesn't agree with but ultimately accepts Kurama's decision to leave Yoko behind. I think that's why Kurama was probably the only person Hiei truly respected for a long time.

Another fun fact, in the Filipino dub they f-ed up a couple characters genders (and changed all the names), one of them being kurama. They originally named him Denise and about halfway through they realized they messed up and changed it to Denis. Also If ur curious abt who the other genderbent one was it was Grandma (idk her name it's been to long) and was named Jeremiah I think. I don't think they ever changed that one though and she (he ?) just stayed like that.

Have never been able to find any evidence Togashi actually said this. Togashi has said he aslways intended Kurama to be male and a major character, but he wasn’t sure if Hiei would be in the story beyond his initial fight with Yusuke. As for them supposedly meant to be a couple, There is one interview where he said something to the effect of “I didn’t think to make them love interests, but I could have done it” That being said, everyone is free to ship who they want. Personally I’ve never shipped these two but eh.

I love that, through out the entire show, Hiei just kinda comes off autistic, not in a bad way, but in a rather realistic way (1:30 being the best example, he's 100% dead pan actually freaking out a little that Kurama of all people managed to get wounded), especially once he actually starts to care about Yusuke
