Kurdish Leader Demirtas Gets 42 Years in Jail: Erdogan's New Crackdown? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
In Turkey, a Kurdish Leader and former presidential candidate has received a jail sentence of 42 years. Selahattin Demirtas, the former leader of the Pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, or HDP, has been jailed along with 23 other Kurdish politicians, for allegedly inciting violent protests in 2014. Demirtas has been in prison since 2016. Human Rights Watch has called the charges against Demirtas "bogus", and the human rights group says that this is a politically motivated case. Demirtas challenged Erdogan from prison in the 2018 Turkish presidential election. His party managed to deny Erdogan a parliamentary majority in 2015. Is the latest crackdown a way for Erdogan to break the spirit of Turkey's Kurdish people?
