Kuretake Art Nouveau Watercolors + a New Sketchbook

Ever since swatching this gorgeous muted watercolor set, Kuretake Gansai Tambi Art Nouveau, I wanted to dedicate an entire sketchbook to explore what this incredible set would do. This video is the start of that sketchbook. I choose a handmade concertina sketchbook for the vessel and I can't wait to devote an entire sketchbook.

Kelly, I love your splashing technique. Could you possibly show us in detail how you do it. How far do you dip your fingers into the water? Are all your fingers wet? etc etc. I’ve watched every video and you inspire me so much. Thank you so much.

I will make sure to show you the process next time I splash on camera. I usually dip in 3 fingers, not the pinky, up to the first digit then splash mostly by flinging my thumb and middle finger together. It creates a nice variety of large and small splashes.

Kelly, I’ve been hearing very positive opinions about Kuretake watercolors and I’ve been anxious to try them. I love the muted colors. The leaves you painted here reminded me of Boo Radley in To Kill A Mockingbird. Actually, your dried reference leaves 🍁 made me think of it. lol!!

Love this video. I haven’t ‘painted’ or finished my tutorial yet BUT I’m doing all my color swatches to see how the paint does on water “I’m mimicking’a Kelly” until I find my own plus I mad3 a really nice sketchbook so I’m pleased. Thank you

Congratulations on making a sketchbook, what a beautiful gift for yourself! There is nothing wrong with mimicking, I do it all the time. Taking the parts you love the most and recreating them in your style is what learning art is all about.

Mmmm! Such a pretty palette. Beautifully muted but still eye catching. You must try out the charcoal mix palette too, which is dark, moody and granulating 😍
