Chad was a veeeeery original drummer. That punk rawness with some metal leanings, Bleach astonishes me to this day. For Nevermind and beyond Dave was perfect but I don't think he would've been perfect for Bleach - he would've been to 'clean' for it, too precise imho. Not saying Chad was sloppy, he had that swagger in his drumming, while Dave is a machine.

Dave is a better drummer, but even Dave has stated numerous times that he based all his drum parts for Nevermind (*EDIT* the songs that were written/demoed with Chad... Nirvana needed a propulsive drummer and that's where Bonham-inspired Dave Grohl came in. Chad was no slouch at all when it came to coming up with creative drumlines but I think it's obvious to anyone who listened he was more following the song than leading it and in most bands the drummer needs to lead. Drummers got replaced for not being in the pocket in Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, and The Clash. Kurt was on the phone with Butch Vig absolutely raving about Dave, calling him the best drummer in the world. I don't think that's much of an overstatement.

If I was putting a band together, and the guy came in who played like Chad, I would be happy with it. 1990 Chad with Nirvana was pretty good imo. But Nirvana was not your average band. They went to the absolute top. Plus Chad was sandwiched between two drumming titans, Dale Crover and Dave Grohl. Chad was never going to shape up.

When Chad was fired they didn't know for sure they were moving to a major label. That wouldn't happen for almost a year later. I've always thought the same thing about Chads drumming. He was good but just good. Dave introduced dynamics to the songs that were missing. You can hear it clearly between both versions of In Bloom & how Dave would add his own touch to songs live that Chad had played also like Dive & others. They're 2 different people , its no surprise they play different. Had he lived & the band continued Kurt would have been a fool to fire Dave for the petty reasons he brought up a couple times.

It’s crazy to think of Dave grohls career; to us gen xers he’ll always be known as a great drummer first while millennials will always see him as a guitarist and singer

I love the Bleach album, but I did call it, rock'n roll cha, cha, cha. It worked perfectly for bleach (one of my favorite albums of all time) but would never have worked for the songs on Nevermind.
@jeffreyval9665
@jeffreyval9665 3 жыл бұрын
Most of the songs on Nevermind were written while Chad was in the band. Probably wouldn't of made much of a difference.
@RICHIEV333
@RICHIEV333 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyval9665 I am a firm believer that as go the drums so goes the band. If you have a mellow drummer you will have a mellow band, and you can't have a versatile band without a versatile drummer. As for real life examples... The police would not have had the Police sound without Steward Copland and Led Zepplin would not have had that Zepplin sound without John Bonham. While the Nevermind songs may have been written when Chad was in the band, Nevermind has a completely different style than Bleach (A great album) and the change seems to be on the drums. That doesn't mean Nevermind is a better album than Bleach but it does explain the difference in style.
@jeffreyval9665
@jeffreyval9665 3 жыл бұрын
@@RICHIEV333 of course Grohl is probably the better drummer and obviously you know alot more about drumming than I do but it's probably more than just drumming that made it a different kind of record. They were with a major label, better production, higher production costs, more commercial pop songs on nevermind. Just think it wouldn't of sounded totally different if channing was still on drums but who knows your probably right.

Dave Grohls is probably one of the top 3 drummers that ever lived. His mother was a music teacher I believe but he had the foundation a legend needs. Backup vocals, hits hard af, and just had the fire and passion for music. Another thing is this dude.is always happy I wish I had that trait alone.

I still find it funny the people still think that Nirvana was just a garage band that made it. Lmao not that they were like most pop bands out there, strategically put together by the label higher ups.

No chad - No Nevermind. Dave took and used a lot of Chads drumming and made it better. Chad came up with a lot of the catchy drum fills and intros.

Love Daves drumming he's flawless, but I'm very grateful and in awe of Chad's drumming. I don't like the suggestion that he's a level down on DG - he just had a different style - lighter and busier. He's certainly no worse a drummer than Kurt and krist were guitarists, Nirvana was never about technical music perfection. And the final chad contribution - the arrangements! Bleach and alot of Neverminds arrangements were down to Chad - and I think they were highly memorable, VARIED, innovative and catchy as hell.

It’s funny because Dave said in an interview that during the in utero sessions, Kurt would leave him conflicting voice messages... one day he would say that the drum part for a song was excellent but the next day he would tell him that he was unsatisfied with the same drum track and it wasn’t up to par... 🤷‍♂️
