What a great twist on a song from the 1980’s that no one ever thought possible. My sincere gratitude to you KE for swinging to this one and hopefully joe Jackson feels good about it too!

That is one tough song to sing and a tricky arrangement to sing it to, but Elling makes it seem so effortless. And what a voice. Remarkable. Just found out about him recently and I’m hooked.

Jazz definitely uses color notes that create tension and release. Nothing out of tune here. Every note spot on.

whoever thinks this is out of tune: you are showing your musical ignorance and complete lack of training. That is exactly the arrangement: and it is a brilliant arrangement at that. Kurt has immense talent, and creative vision is boundless. Please don''t embarrass yourself with further commentary.

Saw him two nights ago in a club the size of a large living room. Myself and half the audience literally were shaking our heads at points in the evening at their mastery; believe me, this should be called the Laurence/Kurt band, what an amazing marriage of concept, deconstruction of melody and chord changes,they are so damn sophistcated it floored me.

What a brilliant Jazz version of this seminal song by the genius Joe Jackson! Joe has never been shy of re-working his material with fresh band line-up and new arrangements, so it is fitting that genius Jazz singers like Kurt Elling are eager to perform their interpretations of the song! Kurt is an amazingly flexible singer; I would check out albums such as The Gate and 1619 Broadway if you want to hear him at his best! This music isn't for everyone, but then which music is? =:^)

@hbdywtk he is out of tune? do you mean e.g. 0:20 or 0:56? he does it on purpose (maj7 chord i think). ok its not the same key as the original, but does it matter? imo everything fits together

Laurence raged that solo!! And Kurt wasn't out of tune lol, he was brilliant as per usual

Uh, the original also had those "stupid" jazz chords, namely lots of major7th chords. To us the word "stupid" in the same sentence as a description of a jazz song makes one sound "stupid" to others. Think about it like this, if you don't speak Chinese, you could walk by two Chinese physicists talking and just because you didn't understand what they said doesn't mean that it had no meaning. They understood each other. We have a saying in jazz, "If you don't get it, that's your problem." Stupid.

There's a big difference between 'singing out of tune' and emphasisng colour notes of jazz chords, which is what Kurt's doing. You need to train your ear and educate yourself, my friend.

I love how people who are anal retentive and have an emotional breakdown if you color outside of the lines, comment on obviously high quality music that they just don't have the capacity to appreciate.

The drummer overplayed but Kurt and the band made it work. That’s improv talent. The drums needed to provide more space for the other instruments. The recording on the album has a tasteful drummer.
@pputnam10011 жыл бұрын
Okay, but now what criticism can I make about Kurt? Only one, the natural tone/ timbre of his voice, to me, is not a world beater, it's not "gorgeous" ; for example, he's no Luther Vandross, vocal quality-wise, no Johnny Mathis, no Kenny Rankin, etc. but that said, he's the best Jazz singer on the planet in my NSHO. Hey nobody has everything, even though it might appear that way at times....

sorry to say that but the drummer plays too agressive..he needs to understand the fact that it's a vocal performance and he should let the vocalist "Sing"...

Borrowed notes not within the diatonic scale,, happens as a routine in jazz vocally and instrumentally,, it’s intentional and not intended to satisfy the simple mind.
