I Learn from Jake Johnston here in Utah and we rarely ever do foot locks for certain reason. I also go to this mma gym and they do a lot of them even the beginners. I learned 3 foot lock defenses and now it went down 80%. They are easy to defend if you learn the prevents not escapes. Although escapes are good also lol.

Kurt, as usual, man, you deliver! I got annoyed because my brother (seriously, my actually blood brother, wtf) keeps hunting for my feet!!! Thinking back, the times that he has gotten me are the times that I was just being nice and relaxed and not controlling his sleeves. I thought he'd be an upstanding and honorable brother, but noo... the sucker has joined the dark side! Anyway, from now on Im grabbing one sleeve. Thank you!

Been footlocked in last competition...he pulled it from standing into x guard and immediatelly went for footlock. I grabbed his lapel with both hands but he was way taller than me and strong... I know this defense very well, but i knew that if i free one arm for puting his foot away from my hips, it will end with brutal snap in my ankle, as i cant hold him with 1 arm... Anyway, even with both hands on his lapel, fingers started to slip and i was forced to verbally tap. :-( any other type of defense for these situations? Thx

Foot,Wrist,Elbow,Knee,Shoulder,Neck, Whatever gets the guy to submit to you in the match works for me. If you have the skills to tap the guy with a legit lock use it. Better to have a broad game of attacks then to limit yourself to only the same attacks everyone else uses and are use to defending against. I love wrist locks and foot locks for two reasons; 1 There very quick subs, 2 Most people have no idea how to defend against them, because they don't even know the basics of how to set them up.

Totally agree. Way too many people learning foot locks at white belt. Most still don't even know the basics of how to control their body or limits of the other persons body.

Im fairly new in the BJJ world but can someone please tell me why so many OG JiuJitsu instructors absolutely HATE foot/ankle locks? I heard Dean Lister say "why ignore 50% of the body" and i couldn't think of an argument to counter it...Just wondering why there is so much hate for those high percentage finishes....Love you Kurt, no disrespect, just wondering. I hate those piece of shit footlock guys! I came from a school that really frowned upon footlocks and recently I moved to a new academy that teaches not only straight ankle locks and toe holds but also heal hooks and for the first month or so I was getting caught constantly cuz I wasn't used to defending against them but I eventually got it all figured out. It's not so bad when wearing a gi cuz there's so much for u to grab onto in order to prevent them from finishing but in no gi it's much harder! I'm glad I'm learning footlocks though cuz they're some of the most effective if not THE most effective submissions there are.
@bdjuggalo7 жыл бұрын
Right people are learning way too early the foot locks. I'm going thru the same situation. Learned 2 prevents and one escape cut the subs down 80%. It's good to know them though just in case.
