Since the grips are for the purpose of moving his legs, you could go ahead and try just grabbing the shins with C-clamps or something. (Take my advice with a grain of salt, though, since I've yet to actually attempt this move, much less this variation.)

I've tried this several times. I think I can safely say that this is a VERY VERY VERY VERY low percentage move. If someone putting the spider guard on you is using enough force this just isn't gonna work
