The French cognate for 'pretend' -- prétendre -- can mean 'profess' or 'say.' In effect, she is asking him whether he calls what he does 'modern jazz,' but she is confused about the meaning of 'pretend' in English. Why she feels comfortable bad-mouthing Berlin (other than French anti-German sentiment because of the World Wars and many previous ones), I don't know.

She makes a very common (and quite expected) mistake. Because her first language is French, she thinks “to pretend” means “to intend”, since the latter is the meaning of the French verb “prétendre”. Portuguese speakers tend to make the exact same mistake (I'm Brazilian btw), because in our case, to intend = “pretender”. But it is funny as hell lol.
