I've read 3 Vonnegut books and this is not one of them, but I have it on my TBR. I, however, recommend Player Piano which I enjoyed the most

I know exactly what you mean about his prose hooking you on the first page. I find it every one of his books does the same. I would recommend you look at Sirens of Titan and also there's a book by Philip Jose Farmer that uses the Kilgore Trout character called Venus on the Half Shell.
