This is Bo Nix and Oregon against Washington earlier in the year, the first time they played each other. College Study Ball Series Number Five: As we continue to dive into these college quarterbacks, really looking at the top six guys on most people's boards. So this week, we're taking a look at the bonus Oregon quarterback. He's had a really good couple of years in Oregon. This year, he completed almost 77% of his passes. Just really, really good player, you know? A lot of people wonder, does he have the arm strength to push the ball down the field? Their offense may be a little bit more underneath, but I would also say their offense may be the most pro-type offense of anybody that we've looked at. And what do I mean by pro-style offense? I mean they have a multitude of concepts that they ask the quarterbacks to run and to execute. Up to this point, we've looked at four other guys, and you see the same concepts over and over and over again. So, you know, this one is going to be a little more extensive in what they ask him to do and how they ask him to see the field, which I think bodes very well moving to the next level. But, you know, where is he at from a physical standpoint, and in the ability to make all the throws? Because all these guys can make all the throws, but when you have to move, when you're off-platform, do you still have enough power behind some throws to be able to make those throws in the NFL when you don't have all the time to have your feet set and be able to work with those down the field? So, again, all of these guys have questions about them. All these things have... all these guys have good things about them. And so we're just trying to dive in and paint the entire picture for you guys. So, let's take a look at number one. #nfldraft #bonix #nfldraft2024

77% accuracy in a pro style offense. That is extremely high accuracy. Reminds of one Brock Purdy in college. Accuracy problems seem to be the one thing the NFL can’t fix. Either you have it or you don’t. Bo has experience and accuracy on his side, in a pro style offense. I’d be willing to bet on those things if I were an NFL team. I’d take Bo over the inaccurate Drake Maye any day of the week and twice on Sunday! The NFL won’t do that. The NFL is addicted to POTENTIAL and superficial things, hand size, ability to throw the ball 70 yards ( He has a cannon of an arm), he has the right height and weight, he runs fast etc. They seem to value those things over things like ability to read coverages and accuracy. They rated a guy, Brock Purdy, who had accuracy and experience, as not even worthy of a draft pick until the very bottom of the draft. If not for San Francisco, Brock would be some practice squad, undrafted free agent guy that everyone forgot about or they had never heard anything about him. That is why NFL teams consistently fail at developing quarterbacks. The NFL is terrible at evaluating and developing quarterbacks because they rate “intangibles and potential” above the ability to actually play the position. Above all else I want my quarterback to make good, quick decisions and who is accurate with his passes! Top 2 priorities! The NFL kind of glosses over those things and are oohed😮 and awed😮 with a strong arm, a big body and of the course the number ONE asset, POTENTIAL!

@@DerrickRG What I saw in the tape is a QB that rarely throws down field and most of his short passes are not on time and a lot are low but his receivers still catch them. That game on this tape was against a bad defensive secondary also.

A lot of Vikings fans don't want Bo but I see a lot of potential in him. He's great at avoiding sacks and he makes good decisions. Plus he has some moxy and confidence. Yes he needs to work on mechanics and needs experience in a real NFL offense. But that's why you develop rookies instead of expect them to be a boss right away.

Bruh that’s just literally how the game tape is filmed from these school coaches. He’s obviously not using the standard NCAA tape and is on some coaches forum site or something. These coaches don’t have NCAA game day super cameras either as their filming multiple angles and a lot further away.

Always a great use of our time to study film with MVP & SB Champ KW who I believe was robbed of a SB when he was with Ariz! Nix IS a BRONCO now & the two things I am looking for are: 1. HE MUST emerge from camp as the QB1 or else I believe all the talk & the pick is BS >>> when a guy gets extra time in college & the talk is he has experience in a Pro Set OFF and he is going to be 30 by the time his rookie contract is up then I want to see him translate that into winning a QB Competition in camp against the other QB bodies on the roster... so if Nix is not QB1 & Steady Stiddy is not his B-U then I am going to really consider the pick to be a bust... and 2. He MUST get his footwork straight- he needs to get it straight in his head that TRUSTING his tech is going to be the all correct thing to do everytime... right now he "thinks" that he gets more power with more effort but it is like golf >>> you get more power with proper tech than any other way possible... he needs to KNOW THAT with CERTAINTY & TRUST THAT... he simply does not buy into proper footwork tech at the moment & his career is over if he doesn't get that right

I like Bo Nix to Denver. I hope they trade down to 17 - 20 then trade down to 25 - 28 to pick up 2 to 3 more picks then draft Bo toward the end of the 1st round, pick up a OT, DE, DT, WR, CB, TE. Still want the Broncos GM fired. Can't forgive him for Russell Wilson.

I don’t think it’s good decision making when he chooses to not throw the open downfield route. I’d go crazy is I was his OC. He often looks at a seemingly open guy then dumps it off anyway. Imagine calling a good play, you get what you want, then he dumps it off. He plays too scared. You see it how he doesn’t let plays develop and how he reacts in tight pockets.

He didnt need more than a few hours. Part of Sean Payton's scouting process is testing a QBs playbook installation process by sending a playbook about 18hrs before a 1-on-1 meeting and Bo had a good grasp on most of it

It’s possible he does start year one but I’m almost rooting for Zach Wilson to be revived and play great this year so we can cash out on a 2nd and 5th round pick for him to load up on more talent for Bo…….. I’m just glad we have our guy for once and our HC and our GM and a Owner with the biggest bag in sports! The broncos are in great hands.

Agree with you when you say the biggest question is can he drive the ball down the field at the next level. He sure does like to take the short and easy throws over throwing the downfield options. He most definitely doesn’t have the same confidence as Penix when it comes to doing exactly that. Penix most definitely is a bigger playmaker in that regard, but possibly also a bit riskier and thus some interception concerns at the next level. But Brett Farve was just like that too, and threw a lot of picks because of it. In that respect I think Penix has a lot more upside than Nix. Personally, based on this tape, I wouldn’t draft Nix in the 1st.

I see a lot of Kirk Cousins as I hear you break him down. Not going to kill you by throwing into bad situations and willing to check it down for completion %. I don't see a lot of, "I'm going to win this right here with my arm talent." Good, long-term QB but I predict will need lean heavily into the running game to win a championship (a la Dilfer).

I have heard virtually nobody else say that the Oregon offense was the most pro-like. In fact, almost every scouting report claims the opposite. Nix spent his entire college time in the systems created by Gus Malzahn & then Ken Dillingham, whom he followed to Oregon from Auburn. That system emphasizes creating advantages with pace by no huddle or hurry up plays. When combined with a spread, it's especially poor for developing skills for the NFL.

There's four strong looks like around 24:36. They regularly hit a boundary toss play with a Four Strong flood concept that is similar to what Shanahan, etc. run at the NFL level. See it from LSU frequently as well. But it's also the variety of concepts they ask him to execute.

I would not say college type spread quarterbacks don't work in the NFL . Lincoln Reilly has 3 starting quarterbacks in the NFL and one on the horizon . Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL . Lamar Jackson is not a atypical NFL quarterback. Mac Jones did play a NFL system in college and now a back up . He was drafted by a system that should have worked for him .

@@stevencole7331 I did not say that college spread QBs can't play in the NFL, or even that they can't be franchise level QBs. I said that the experience of operating in that offense is a poor preparation for the NFL. Every scout, coach & GM would echo that statement. The fact that some of these guys do succeed is obviously proof that it's possible, but the simple fact is, since 1990 the success rate of first round drafted QBs is only 50%. Today's college offenses are significantly LESS able to prepare quarterbacks than they were just 20 years ago. Most of these guys fail. Those that do typically have a high learning curve. You mentioned Mahomes, a generational talent, along with Lamar Jackson, the best dual threat QB in NFL history as examples. Mahomes had to sit one year behind Alex Smith, but on top of that part of his success stems from the fact that he has been in basically the same offense his entire career dating all the way back to high school. At Texas Tech he was running the same concepts that nearly all Texas HS quarterbacks do, & when he joined the Chiefs, Andy Reid installed much of the Red Raider's offense in his playbook. The conncern I have over both Penix & Bo Nix is that neither one has looked impressive unti they were surrounded by a massive level of talent & protected by two of the top three offensive lines in the college ranks. It's also a concern that it took 5 & 6 years for them to reach a level where they are considered NFL high round draft picks. There's a good chance one or both will join the ranks of the 50% that bust in the NFL if they are not in the right situation.

@@user-zr4km5ns8t Yes Andy developed his offense to Mahomes talents . The ravens completely changed there offense from flacco to Lamar mid season I believe most times a quarterback fails because he goes to the wrong system for his talents and a coach is not willing to adapt .
