Caleb Williams - Episode #2 | Kurt Warner Breaks Down the Game Tape | College Series '24

Here's PART TWO of our look at Caleb Williams. I went back to his game against Colorado and watched his tape. Now, we can say what we want, Colorado has a great defense, some of that stuff, but to me, it's not so much about the quality of player that's on the other side. It's more about what you're seeing defensively and how you process that information defensively to what you're doing offensively. That is how I'm evaluating these guys. I'm trying to look at the processing piece. Not, did they play against a good team on the other side? To me it is more important that I can see them go through their read. Can I see them look at the defense and see rotations and understand where to go with the football? Do they have the playmaking ability when opportunities are there to make the plays that they should make? Both these videos just showed me that Caleb should absolutely go Number 1. Bad O-line and alot of bad play designs that Kurt points out and he still succeeded as well as he did

I'm glad you did this one. The USC o-line was so bad it was hard to evaluate him against the good teams. Colorado is the perfect match-up to evaluate. Their d-line was poor, but they had some really good players in the secondary.

@@Jay-ci4to I hate to disturb you with facts but Justin Fields average time to throw was the same as Caleb's at 3.2secs. Justin with a clean pocket was at 2.76 secs and was pressured a league high of 48% of dropbacks. The narrative that Justin holds the ball too long doesn't hold weight

No, it applies to Fields too. The problem with Fields is he's slow in processing and his release. He doesn't take what the defense gives him. He's tentative and doesn't just let the ball fly. He's not good at anticipatory throws. Good QBs take the pass rush out of the game by getting rid of the ball. This is why Bagent saw half the pressures and sacks that Fields did in his few games. That's not to say Bagent is a starter. He's not, but that part of the game he happens to be better at than Fields. @@seungholee4892 h

Hey Kurt. On that last play. What was the WR to the bottom of the screen doing? Looks like he stalk blocked and didn't even run a route. And the right guard is almost 10 yards down field. Miscommunication?

I think the hitch he missed at the end was supposed to be some sort of slip screen to the RB. Lineman leaks out and looks like he’s trying to lead block. Caleb appears to be staring straight ahead at nothing and I think it’s because he’s waiting for the slip.

my biggest concern with caleb is, can he and will he stand/ step up in the pocket and complete passes . my biggest problem with kyler is once he gets a ball tipped from the pocket then he has a tendency to back up instead of step up and then the d-ends can go wide and deep and let the middle of the d line collapse the pocket . if he cant get outside the tackles and has to scramble in the middle he goes down easily in the wash . i would love to see kyler use more under center 5 step drops and throw on schedule . just to keep his footwork honest . is caleb the same guy . i know hes a couple inches taller . drew brees got away with being short by throwing with touch over the pocket instead of just throwing bullets .

How does the offensive scheme not affect this eval? Air raid is prescripted options for all so he knows the progressions pre snap and everyone knows their spot, and hence makes progressions easier. If each man runs to scripted spot where's the improvisation? He doesn't need touch he's just throwing to a spot, easy to process and eliminate. Hence defense can do it too. That's why it doesn't translate to the NFL. As you kept saying it's all the damn same

On that final play, it looks like they were trying to run an RPO QB draw but the LB blew it up. The is blocking out the corner instead of running a route, and the right guard takes off up field to find someone to block. The defense ran a game with the DT and LB, and blew up the hole. It looks like Caleb checks the backside defenders at the snap to make sure they aren't closing in run support (likely his RP read). He sees him get depth, and turns to run. Either that or there was some serious miscommunication, because there is no way he looks backside first like that if there isn't route if it was actually a pass play.

Are you talking about at 20:33 in the video? WHen they are in 10 per, 3x1 to the field and the back to the field? #1 runs a comback at 10yrds, #2 runs a stop at 5yrds and #3 runs a corner to the plyon? You believe that was an RPO QB run design?

@@travisoshea oh for sure he should have thrown the RPO but I think it’s disingenuous to act as if there wasn’t a running option. Caleb made the wrong decision, happens, but he wanted something other than the quick hitch, it wasn’t there, and by the time he could’ve made it back to the hitch, the guard has released and he can’t throw it anymore. He likes to big game hunt and it bites him sometimes lol. In the NFL you expect to see this coached out tho.

Yeah you’re right; DJ is a legitimate WR and JF showed what he can do with a real #1 WR. Now you add a 2nd legitimate WR #1 in K. Allen…JF’s production only goes up! And that’s the point; all his poor stats came from a lack of talent from the roster. If the roster improves then JF improves…the sky is the limit. Here’s the point…no one and I do mean no one KNOWS that Caleb is it. And if he proves to not be it; then the Bears just set themselves back ANOTHER decade. I’ve watched every single snap of JF’s career just as I have suffered EVERY single snap of the Freaking Chicago Bears for the last 40 years and I can unequivocally promise that JF improves with this newly loaded roster. Caleb…I have no idea. I don’t know if he can lead MEN. The kid is already spouting about being legendary…how many legends can you name that came into the league gloating about being legendary before they have even taking a practice snap in the NFL? This is one of my concerns about Caleb. He reminded me too much of Justin Fields - holds ball to long, tucks and runs etc. Needed to see he could play in structure and process all the info. He will be fine.

I don't like this draft class one bit. I don't trust USC players, ESPECIALLY qb's at the NFL level. It seems like all 3 of these dudes operated from the shotgun exclusively.. I don't like that from a timing and rhythm perspective.. I want to see their footwork. I am interested to see Kurt's take on Daniels, imo, he's got the weakest arm of the 3 by a lot. Played much tougher competition than the other two guys combined though. None of these dudes are even close to CJ Stroud who is the standard for the last decade.. and he was my pick as the overall #1 last year.. this is a horrible class for qb's. I'd love to be wrong but none of these guys inspire much confidence.

You don’t follow USC then. We had a horrible team. Defense was basically last in all of D1 football giving up 40 points as game. Our leading receiver likely a 5th round pick and our OL was horrible. This was on Lincoln Riley head coach he didn’t get players to help Caleb. With all that Caleb so called down year against great pac12 conference was 30/5 TD/INT ratio with 10 rush TDs. So you can say that but know the context that we have no players other than Caleb on our team

Notre dame he didn’t look good. UCLA he didn’t look good. Both those games their offensive lines were supremely outmatched and there wasn’t time to do anything. Against the other teams? I’m not sure you watched the games. Caleb lit up Utah the first time. Only lost to 2 roughing calls that cancelled out a game sealing interception and led to a touchdown and he tore his hamstring in the first or 2nd quarter the second time and still put a crazy performance together. Washington he played great. Oregon he had a decent game but Oregon scored so much so quickly it didn’t matter. So just go back and actually look at the game instead of listening to narratives
