NESticle wasn't the first emulator. There had been others before it, but what made NESticle stand out was that it was the first free one (the others had to be paid for) and it was the first one to have huge compatibility.

there are 3 main types of hacks, improvements (music/graphics/translations) level (overworld map/level design) assembly (core changes to some part of the game) and they can be used in combinations... Most of these hacks fall under the improvement category (as ironic as that might seem) as they involve playing with the sprites and text, though in some cases level redesign may happen, assembly hacks are almost unheard from these types of hacks.

Man, those rom hacks were really weird but funny also, specially a Link's awakening rom called "Link gets laid"; although there were some really interesting hacks that would make games cooler, for instance I remember there was a pokemon red rom that had that would let you catch the other 2 pokemons that you couldn't obtain at the beginning.

If you want to see true art in rom hacking, just look up a guy called HyperBound. He made this crazy earthbound hack and it was for an art show. What was so crazy about it is that everh time you died the game data would corrupt a little, making the map glitch out. If you died too much, the game was unplayable. He is working on another even more massive hack now.

Art is way simpler than most people figure. It's a form of communication, and that's it. If something is create to communicate anything - an idea, a feeling, whatever - then it is art. The fear in the game community that the existence of games which seek to communicate deep meaning will eliminate the mindless run-and-gun games they prefer is unfounded. Just look at movies. There are tons of arthouse films, movies are widely regarded as art, people argue over whether they send bad messages or not, but you can still just go watch San Andreas and watch a spectacle of destruction for 2 hours without going through the trauma of being made to think.

haven't played it, but super noah's ark 3d seems like it would be pretty amazing - they essentially just took the game engine of doom and made a game about sedating goats, which i think is a lot easier to relate to than the original concept behind doom. though i'm not quite sure if it counts as a romhack

In the most literal sense, definitely not, since it was a commercial venture compiled off source code from id - it's no more a hack than Hexen or Rise of the Triad. Super Noah's Ark licensed what was essentially id Tech 0. Also, once you get that close to the Doom era, the idea of user-made content rises and you're just doing mods at that point. (Though DeHackEd, the EXE modifier for Doom used to make new monsters instead of reskinning old ones, is a bit closer to the idea of ROM hacking. Man, I remember being neck-deep in frame codepointers....)

I think Rom Hacks should be considered alongside the original games.....depending on the hack. Personally, I think the hacks mentioned in this video, that are quick, and rough hacks, that simply change a few sprites around, are stupid. On the other hand, there's plenty of great full rom hacks, that change the graphics, levels, music, and even game mechanics. Even some graphics-only rom hacks are fine, assuming they changed most of the graphics, and put actual effort into it. Some examples of Rom Hacks of the original Super Mario Bros. that I think should be considered right along side the original game: Super Mario Unlimited, and Super Mario Xmas - Re-Kringled.

I know this a Super Mario Bros. video, but I would like to bring attention to another great place to find ROM hacks: The Sonic Hacking Contest is an annual event that showcases Sonic ROM hacks from the classic era all the way through Sonic Generations PC. These hacks range from pallet swaps to completely custom fan games, and, though the contest is over at the moment, you can still go there and download the ROMs. Of course you'll need an appropriate emulator or official game to get them to work, but most are easy get going. If it's your first time I recommend the Kega Fusion emulator for the Genesis, Master System, CDI and 32x games. I think a well made ROM hack is perfectly acceptable as art. Think about Pokemon. One of the most well known games ever. Their are literally THOUSANDS of ROMs for every version of pokemon and a good bit of them are like playing a completely new game. Take Touhoumon. The conversation are rewrote , the encounters are remixed, the entire game feels completely different and fresh while still having some familiar elements. ( And to anyone that has played the Touhou series, many a familiar face).

Let me just throw this out there... if a Bic Crystal ballpoint pen has a permanent place in the Museum of Modern Art (New York), I think a lot of the debate about whether or not ROM hacking is art is futile. To me it's kind of a digital form of grafitti art... but that doesn't make it all good... or even most of it. In the very least, it's an important form of self-expression.

Are parody films art? For that matter, are comedy films still considered art? I feel like we're too stingy with the term to begin with, pretty much any form of creative expression can be considered art in some form, its quality not withstanding. We shouldn't ask "is this art?" but rather ask "is this art worth reflecting on?". Is it art with a point or a message that asks us to immerse ourselves in it in order to understand or is it just something thrown together for entertainments sake. The point of "the fountain" and da-da in general is pretty much exactly that, art is in what we choose to see it in and no one has the right to say it isn't. To answer the question though, no I don't think most hacks are really worthy of reflection in the same way the grey album is mostly because they aren't really trying to "do" anything, they aren't really exploring anything other than how offensive they can make a kids game, at least not the ones you show in this episode. Perhaps there is a hack out there that actually offers something back to the viewer other than a cheap laugh, and if there is then it's just as worthy of consideration as anything else. And yes, to whomever might be reading this and thinking what I think you're thinking, videogames are art. If you don't believe me go play shadow of the colossus and I'll accept you're weeping apology at my feet when you're finished.
