I adopted my basenji from a rescue dog kennel. She was very young and had been removed from a family by child welfare for chewing a baby's fingers. I had no idea what I was in for. She was very stubborn, however extremely intelligent. I became a falconer at 12 when I found an injured red-tailed hawk in the road and later, I adopted a wolf malamute hybrid. If you want to know what an animal needs, they will let you know, if you are patient enough to learn. Once, while walking my basenji, we came upon a lost basenji stray. Both dogs took to each other as if they were old friends. My basenji had never liked other dog breeds. I managed to capture the dog and took him to my vet to check for a chip. We contacted the owner and she said she did not want him back, so I had two wonderful basenjis.

This commentary is garbage. I own a basenji and he is loyal and protective of me and would pass up treats or any food to follow me around and see what I’m doing. His name is Titan and except for when walking down a street with cars he’s never on a leash. He love’s running through the woods but never runs out of sight and comes right back immediately when called. This video makes basenjis sound like narcissistic dogs that could care less about there owners and that couldn’t be further from the truth. I slipped on ice the other day and Titan came flying to me licking my face to make sure I was ok. They are allot of work yes but you will be rewarded in kind with the love and affection this breed has for its family.

my besenji mix is wary of strangers and even though his recall can be hit or miss and i seldomly allow him off leash because of that he usually tends to just stick around me anyway. he also hates it when people randomly try to pet him due to his cuteness.

My basenjis didn't even raise an eye brow when I fell, but washed my feet thoroughly every evening so your's is a unusual basenji or you two have an unusually bond. And they prayed on everything so it was very dangerous to have them of lease if there were cars, bikes or trains near. In the woods it was fine, they usually run in circles and appears every now and then, but would go to the person that had the food. Typically basenjis. I have 26 years of experience with basenjis.

@@teafra3616 yes me and my basenji Titan are very close, I am definitely his human out of a house of 6 people. But you are completely correct about not letting him off leash near planes, trains, and automobiles. To this day I always leash walk him down the street and into the woods and once deep enough I can safely cut him free. I used a “come to me “ method from a trainer online I forget the name but he is from California and used to train orca whales at sea world. He has a beautiful Doberman named Prince, I’m sure of you looked up a Prince and dog trainer you’d going him. His name might be a Beckham but don’t quote me on that. Anyways using his method when we’re getting closer to civilization again I call him lower my hand to the ground and praise him while he’s running back, I mean this dog has been chasing a squirrel and I call using this method and he turns on a dime and runs like a greyhound back to me , it’s quite remarkable. I can’t get him to obey much else but for some reason this one always works. But like you said when he’s on the street on his leash it’s like any concept of the danger a giant truck doing 45 mph by us poses doesn’t register with him. He lunges out towards the vehicles and I’m always scared the leash will break one day. And he’s not a dumb dog by any means it’s just that fear instinct when it comes to automobiles is absent. Especially motorcycles, this did hates motorcycles more than anything in the world. Funny little personalities these basenjis have, and they are a ton of work but Titan is also the greatest companion I’ve ever had. I had 2 beagles and a cat growing up and they were never as close to me as my basenji. I take him with me just about everywhere I go within reason, and I don’t think he’d have it any other way. Thanks for the reply. Happy New Year from Massachusetts

I've had a female for 14 years and then a male for 12 years. The breed has changed and adapted very much through generations, but still think highest of themselves, they are not easily trained but easily bought with treats, are very cuddly and crave warmth from whomever as long as they get what they are after. Fun and mischievous, if they are understimulated. Soft, short and clean fur and no dog smell at all. Often tends to bond more with one human but cuddles with everyone. Is NOT a dog that you want to on the loose outside fenceless, and is often very dominant against new dogs of same sex if not extremely well socially trained at a young age. Love this breed, very unique. ❤❤❤

Great overview of the basenji characteristics that some folks might not be ready for. I live alone with my basenji, so he gets plenty of undivided attention, but I also leave him home while I'm at work--thus far, he seems very comfortable, even on the rare occasion when I leave him alone for 8-9 hours.

In my opinion, Basenjis never lost the ability to bark. I think they bever barked. They are one of the dog breeds that are most wolflike, and wolves don't bark, except as puppies. But like Basenjis, adult wolves howl, whine, and make other sounds, except for barking. Crate training is recommended for young dogs to keep them from getting into mischief when the owner isnt home. In my experience with my own Basenjis, after they are about two years old they can be left alone in many cases if they have been trained. Positive reinforcement is the only training that works with these intelligent, independent animals. And the rewards are many! It's not the Basenjis that are unsuitable, it's badly informed owners who aren't suitable. Not everyone can appreciate their many wonderful traits. If that's you, get a golden retriever or a poodle.

They’re nothing close to the wolf… they’re an ancient breed that is carved in the pyramids. If they were to be compared to a dog it would be the dingo.
@kathleenstoin6712 ай бұрын
@@mndcp333 You might want to look up "dogs closest to wolves." Basenjis are on that list. They don't look like wolves, but as one of the earliest dog breeds, they ARE close to wolves. And I am very aware that they are represented in ancient Egyptian carvings.

Very informative video. What does 'a few hours' walk every day' mean? How much walking, exercise and training are required every day? And what is the best type of exercise for a Basenji? Last question. How accurate is 'they cannot be alone at home'? Does this mean that a Basenji cannot be left alone in the house for three or four hours if it is trained from a young age?
@pawbreed2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your questions. Yes, the Basenji is indeed a very active breed that needs long walks. The bigger, the better. Of the exercises, our dog most of all likes to tug the rope with a toy. So she spends more energy and gets tired faster. "Basenji cannot be left alone in the house for three or four hours" is of course conditional. We taught our dog to be alone right away, but gradually. After a while, we can let her be alone with the cat. The cat is in control. Some of our acquaintances who have Basenji cannot leave their pets alone at home. As for training, we were lucky in this regard, she, although reluctantly, began to carry out some commands. Now we are not afraid to leave our dog for a few hours. Also, on a walk, we can let her run where she wants. But all this is due to the fact that we went to the training and taught her commands. But in any case, you need to be careful with it.

I think all these things mentioned are very much true in general basis, but there is alot of differences between basenjis. More than most breeds basenji traits have huge variety between individuals. Bitches and males are very different interms of walking without leash. Males tend to have much higher hunting needs so they probaply will run away if they see movement. I have two basenji males, 4 and 6 year olds and they have very different personalities. Traits that both have are: love sleeping and eating, watching wildlife and other dogs through window or sitting in balcony and playfullnes when not in passive mode. Both love long hikes in forrest or any where in nature but they are oke also if weather is not good and they get to only visit neary tree twice a day. Biggest differences are: younger loves to swim and is very active to play with other dogs except big, black and furry ones. Other only accepts other dogs if they are small bitches and puppies. Younger also if friend to any people that are willing to say hello to him and propably would trade homes if provided some meat by other people. Older is very family oriented and does not really like people that are out of its inner circle of people. No problem with our 2 year old kid or cats for eather one of them. Both are very healthy and require no taking care of fur or other things. Both have been moderately easy to train but they tend to choose when they want to do things I want. They both love to go outside when its 30 degrees C heat but can handle -20C winter conditions too with winter coats. Feel free to ask anything! You can follow @basenjialliance in IG if you want to see photos from our journeys.

First: Opening a video with a dog fight is not a good look. Why do you use a fake voice on these videos? It's called FANCONI syndrome. Not Fancoli. Also, 3 years is not enough experience. You should be asking Breed Preservationists about breeds. Did you ask the owners of those pictures if you were allowed to use them? Lastly: The dog in this video is overweight.
