I fished off Iceland's 'limits' way back in the 70's. (Cod War era). We took whatever got caught in our trawls as did everyone else. I saw the writing on the wall when catches became smaller and smaller, as did the cod, and I left the industry. The comments below calls anyone who disagrees with heavy fishing today, wimps and Liberals etc. I was never a Liberal and never will be. Just a guy who did deep sea fishing for a living and saw what was happening. Sure, the Ruskies, Spanish and all, helped the situation to become dire. Ever see Halibut the size of five foot long these days or a sole which could feed two?. Didn't think so. As Dylan stated... 'The Times They Are a Changin'. Bottom line: your grand kids won't be able to afford fresh fish.

This is not an easy job, but I'am thankful for what these men (sometimes women) do so that we can enjoy eating fish. Be safe out there guys. And LOVE that song.

I was born on the Shetland Islands. I fished there for years. some of the finest fishing grounds in Europe. Thankyou for the footage. It brought back many memories. great to see the Solans and the Killer Whales! The deck boss would be the Boatswain (Bosun or Bo's'n) I really miss that ocean and the life of a fisherman but there is no going back for me now. its a young man's game and I live over a thousand miles from the nearest sea! (Iowa USA). Thanks again for the memories of that part of my life and for the song. how many tonnes were in that shot?

@@youyouulf Uh, that's not how it works. The Orca have plenty of food left. They are also smart animals, and they know damn well that some of the Mackerel will manage to escape from the trawl net, and when they do the Orca pick them off. They have adapted pretty well to the fishing industry.

And for those that think the Alaska Pollack are going extinct anytime soon. The Alaska fishing and wildlife conservation service only allows 1 percent of all monitored stocks in Alaskan waters to be caught each year. The biggest school of these fish ever seen was an estimated 2.5 billion fish weighing an estimated 1 billion tons of fish. Last year they allowed 10 million tons to be caught.

Wholesale slaughter. After the Icelandic Bank collapse, they turned their sights on mackerel as the increasing water temps meant mackerel were venturing into their grounds. Overnight, they increased their annual quota from 2.5Ktonnes to 60Ktonnes for Iceland and the Phaeroes. This is why I haven't caught any mackerel for over 6 years. Last and this year, they have clawed their way back from the brink of extinction. So what of the larger predatory fish and mammals that depend on them? The same old story. Greed. I can hear them shouting : it's a big shoal this one, take 'em all lads! Sandeel? Dredged for feckin' fuel oil and animal feed. How unnatural is that. When will pigs and cows get a crossover mutated virus with worldwide affecting issues? Only a matter of time!

Poor wales, we are taking their source of food. Does Anyone wonders how many boats do this per day? I'm a experience angler and I didn't catch one Single Spanish Mackerel this year or last year when I used to bring five of them home. This type of fishing is wrong and we should be concern about this for the future of our children.

This is why Shetland needs full independance. There are more boats from other nations(Irish, Scottish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish) fishing in our seas than Shetland boats. I'm no Liberal Lefty but you should see the size of the massive Dutch super trawlers that will fish within 2 miles of our coast and apparantly those same vessels are responsible for destroying the fish stocks off Africa too.
@scottishjon67758 жыл бұрын
Remember as much as it doesn't want to be Shetland is still part of the U.K. as is Scotland, so for now your "other nations " reference to Scottish vessels is invalid, however I do agree with the bulk of your comment, Brussels and Maggie thatcher I think come to mind as the main culprits, I've been away from the fishing for a number of years now but if I remember correctly some landlocked countries were even given quotas to fish in our waters

Everyone hating on these commercial fishing boats don’t see the big picture they only see a big haul. You know the thing is that smaller boats will fish exactly as much and maybe more ( cause they will be less checked up on) as these big ones. Also these boats believe it or not is better for the environment beacause they only need one trip when small ones need 5.

Thank GOD we’re leaving the EU at the end of 2020. Maybe then we can get back to sustainable levels and keep these Mega trawlers off our fishing grounds. Taking out a full shoal or year class like this will end in disaster for future fish sustainability. It’s greed not need that promoted this type of fishing!
@kinblanking4 жыл бұрын
A lot of boats like this in the uk fleet too John. Hugely expensive to build, built with government subsidies, they don't want to stop the fishing they just want to be able sell it to the EU countries. UK government couldn't give two Sh**s about the state of commercial fishing practice. Sad but true.
@magnuspolson52074 жыл бұрын
@@kinblanking UK boats get no subsidies to build these type of boats. All self funded and with massive bank loans. Pelagic fishing is one of the most sustainably managed fisheries in Europe. Not long ago scientists even suggested increasing the mackerel quota because there was such a high quantity and if stocks become too large then it can lead to canibilism due to lack of feed.
@kinblanking4 жыл бұрын
Hi Magnus, no subsidies currently, but the upscaling of uk fishing fleet over the last 50 years certainly used government money for building large trawlers. My uncle sold/took a payment to give up (decommission ) his boat (one of many fisherman) that allowed quotas / licences etc. to be purchased and added to large vessels carrying put much more industrial methods of fishing. The beginning of the end really. "Science" increasing palaegic quotas due to potential cannibalism ........... .....what happened before industrial fishing, fish species have never been looking for someone to intervene, they balanced themselves. The only thing that would promote cannabalism is the lack of a natural food source. Awful argument from "scientists ".
@georgelamb98734 жыл бұрын
Aye ignorance is bliss, why is it you think "foreign" boats LEGALLY fish Scottish waters? Fishery Protection vessels can certainly board and check their catch so why is it they are unable to stop them fishing, have you any idea? Could it be down to licence agreements and quotas do you think, licences our government sold to these foreign boats which are basically collecting from the sea what they have already paid for. No one has mentioned it in my earshot yet but we'll be paying £ millions to those "foreigners" in compensation for the removal of their legally obtained fishing rights.
