Its not. Not to mention quotas making fishermen throw millions of tons away each year as certain species are not in a specific seasonal quota. Edited I forgot to mention that there could be hours between each quota and as change overs happen the guards are at their highest patrolling and give huge fines if they happen to find you as they seem fit targeting specific species out of quota. stupidity at its best. Fishermen dont want this, its their livelihood and understand these regulations are not sustainable.

A whole fishing industry of small fishing boats in the North of Scotland was killed-off so the EU could allow these people to go out with their hi tech vacuum cleaners and suck up huge quantities of fish. Again, I’m not a tree-hugger but I recognize the difference between 5 guys on a fishing boat going into the North Atlantic for 3 days in a 30 ton wooden boat (a smack) and a factory trawler just sucking up massive quantities of meal-fish. Why not just drain the ocean and send out a guy with a dustpan and brush; it would be easier, right?

There is something off here. I worked on a factory trawler out of Dutch. This way of retrieving fish from the cod end is way too inefficient and dangerous compared to hauling the bag onto the back deck, then emptying it into the live tanks before processing. There has to be some reason for doing it this way that skirts some sort of regulations against standard trawlers. It wasn't sustainable back when I fished and I could add up how bad these huge trawlers rape and pillage the ocean. I think they need to be outlawed completely.
@StudioVike4 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. The newest boats today lower the fishing pump behind the boat and pump the bag empty without having to swing it forward on the side of the boat, with that solution it is much safer and more efficient. The boats today are more efficient in the fishing field than they were a few years back, but today there are quota based fishing that is strictly regulated. The boats are effective in the field, but spend most of the year at the dock. Effective fishing and more climate friendly in terms of pollution.
@richardjohnson46964 жыл бұрын
Pumping doesn't look nearly as safe if the ocean was really stormy. I remember swells that our 250' ship would disappear from the horizon then pop back up, then disappear. I would be interested in experiencing something like this while on deck and seeing how the process is done. This video also showed what we would use occasionally, a mid water net at night, the rest of the time we were dragging the bottom. I just have a hard time believing that huge ships can be sustainable, especially when you have foreign vessels such as the chinese who send their fishing fleets all over the globe nonstop. It is only a matter of time before the ocean is depleted.

Do you really think it would be better to do the catch by 1000 smaller boats in the dangerous waters surrounding the Norwegian coast? would you also think it is more sustainable? and do you think the quality on the fish would be better in smaller boats than in a modern vessel with cooling facilities to keep the quality at the best level...try rethink one more time. And as mentioned, all fishing in the Norwegain waters are strictly regulated and well controlled. After work 28 years in Asia i think the problem with sustainable fishing should not be mentioned here but moved to other parts of the world.

If you live on a lake and you empty the entire lake out over a weekend instead of fishing steadily all year round, you kill it. How many vessels like the M/S Teigenes, from many nations, are operating in the oceans of the world? This level of mechanized fishing, by itself, is not sustainable. Add climate change into the mix; changing water temperature, salinity, acidity, sea level, currents, etc., and it's easy to imagine a complete collapse of the marine food chain. Mass murder of fish? You apparently don't know the meaning of the word 'murder'.

Not sustainable. 1850 tons in 1 trip multiply that by probably 100 boats similar size and the numbers are depressing. We as humans are doomed but not beofre we kill everything in the ocean im guessing. :(

Fishing is strictly quota based in Norway, it is not free fishing.

its not the Scandinavian countries you should worry about sir... They follow the law... Its all the non-law abiding countries that you should worry about.. China russia and many many other countries that over fish this planet.

yeah welcome to the epicness of humans only care for their pockets and never for nature. You can't sustain that fishing. But seeing they dont care about it at all, when is the ocean empty ?
@wcresponder4 жыл бұрын
You people and the oceans empty whining. Geez have another drama cookie.

If it not sustainable then why they build the trawler and even go out to the sea then ??.

I bet not a single person on that boat has a deep sea rod on the ready. That should be against the law. Should be required to catch 10 fish by pole before going to the big nets.
@StudioVike4 жыл бұрын
I will bet most of the people on board these boats have caught more fish on fishing rods than those commenting on the video here.

That is terrible this type of fishing should be banned it shouldn't even be called fishing. In the northeast coast of the US the commercials wipe out the breeding grounds and decimate the stocks and the recs have to pay for it with shorter seasons low bag limits and increased size limits. Ban them all

Jesus fished and taught many and now some just got more creative and more efficient at it so people didn’t have to do it themselves.
