Was he not to be trusted? They pretty much trusted him with everything UNTILLL his power was about to eclipse theirs.... Then it became convenient to say that Jack was a psychopath... "Said thr group of vault hunters that murders hundreds for loot all the time...." The vault hunters arent the precious paladins of the universe. That mifhtve been a better story honestly. Instead you get Lilith.... All impulse and emotion. All self righteous and indignant. Jack had plans. And yeah. It wouldve meant making him king. But the vault hunters couldve teamed up with him. If they had remained true allies even friends to jack maybe they couldve been the failsafe that prevented his fall. "Like friends do for each other in real life" instead they isolated him, betrayed him, and decided as a group he couldnt be trusted. But ya know what can be trusted? A scorchef world run by bandit clans and big tech. That's better. Jack could have halted all wars and the infighting and brought order to pandora. Instead.... Welll. I get the theme of borderlands. But in my opinion they aimed low in creativity for how the story could have played out. And all I have heard about 3 is how lack luster the story is. Freaking maya and krieg get shafted in the end. Like its only a victory for people like lilith. The little leaders of their crusade. Everyone else got the shaft or suffered for those decisions basically. It's a catch 22 but its always been an interesting philosophical discussion to visit.

Well he didn't really treat rhys well but that's not really his fault xD He had no way to know how to treat an actual, true friend so he just treated him like everyone else, I.E. terribly. He got Rhys in trouble, tried to kill his friends after promising he wouldn't, bailed when Rhys was captured and needed the help, and kept trying to tempt him to be more evil like himself. And then killing Rhys was just 'oh yeah it needs to happen' thing - like he just wants to shove that body into him which will kill him. He does also mention transferring consciousness over, though, so maybe he didn't actually plan on flat out killing Rhys, just his body. As a sort of upgrade. But that's still pretty twisted and bad. I think he does care about Rhys and like you said, sees himself in him and wants to trust him - he just doesn't know how to do go about doing that the right way, so he fucks up and Rhys takes it the wrong way and betrays him like everyone else. It's the final straw for Jack and he goes crazy trying to kill Rhys and keep him on the failing station with him because 'we're going down together and I won't let you leave me'. Then after 'confessing' stuff to Rhys he just tries to kill him again anyway, losing any credibility he had in his speech of how they're similar. I don't know if that was necessarily his fault, he doesn't know how to trust people and Rhys's betrayal cut deep and was the final straw for him - but still. He had some real character growth until he resorted to murdering people like always. I just wish that in season 2, if you didn't crush Jack, you can bring him back or something and try to work with him again after you've both calmed down. Because I don't think killing Jack was the right move - you were both pissed, betrayed, hurt, and angry. You both tried to kill each other. But letting yourselves cool off for a bit and think about everything logically would be the best move, I think, instead of outright destroying each other. I don't know. Jack wasn't ever really 'nice' to Rhys, but probably the nicest he's been, for Jack. He doesn't know how to have a friend or trust someone. That's not really his fault, but it does make him more of an asshole - especially to Rhys who is trying to get on his good side and wants to trust him.

@@bluez1892 Rhys never actually outright betrayed him in the literal sense; Jack just perceives it as another betrayal when Rhys throws his 'gift' in his face and goes about destroying Helios and taking Jack down. To Jack it's another slap to the face in his warped reality, even though it is only Rhys's rational response to Jack wanting to kill him, so to speak. Rhys didn't betray him in the way everyone else betrayed him, but in Jack's mind it's still a betrayal--and the final straw.

The two of them make a compelling story and I love it. I also don't actually think Jack is dead? Isn't the pocket watch Sasha heals with the same as Jack's that he got/had on him in Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2? So I feel like he lived, thought it only had one use, sold it to go into hiding and regroup/plan/heal and make everyone think they won so they wouldn't suspect anything, and he's actually still out there somewhere, plotting revenge. He probably knows at least a vague location of the other vaults, and 'war is coming'. Who else would be the villain? Why else would it be so important in the pre-sequel for those guardians to recruit human members to hunt him down and take over the space station? Because he threatened one planet and its moon? No. Because he poses a larger threat overall. So I think the villain in the third game will be revealed to be Jack, in a twist, eventually. And hopefully Rhys will be in the game... but... if not I guess that's fine. I mean, I'll still play it either way.

Oh, wow. When he was talking about 'his Angel'... That hit me. So many people think Jack was horrible and inhumane and theyre RIGHT, but he would've actually been a good person if he didnt have such a bad childhood. He may have not gotten as corrupted by the power from the Vault of the Sentinel. That's why further in the Pre-Sequel he turns Angel's picture down. He's ashamed of himself, but he can't turn back now. I'm sad we couldnt save him, he was-and is- one of the best videogame villians ever.

Or the real Jack is still alive. The pocket watch that healed Sasha randomly looked an awful lot like Jack's trademark pocketwatch. So he could have healed and went into hiding after Borderlands 2. Or, failing that, he did see, at the end of the Pre-Sequel, what would happen at the end of Borderlands 2, including his own death. So he might have sent a body double in his place. Not ideal, especially with how much he wanted to control the Warrior himself, but he did see his own death in the vision and he knows there are other vaults elsewhere. Not to mention the whole 'war is coming' aspect at the end of the Pre-Sequel. A war spanning multiple planets which Jack has seen the map of in a vision? Vaults on multiple planets where these specific traitorous vault hunters are not? Who else do you think the villain of Borderlands 3 would be? It's gotta be Jack. I mean, the guardians went so far as to manipulate and possess humans to take over a space station and kill Jack, and the moon itself, to keep him from discovering the visions he got in the vault. They failed, of course, but why would it be so important to them to stop him if he only threatened one planet and its moon? Because he doesn't threaten just Pandora, but all the planets. I feel like he and Rhys will meet back up. Rhys was teleported away in the Traveler's vault which goes to multiple planets all over the universe. The next game is focused on other planets, not Pandora like before, and on vaults on other planets. There's going to be a villain trying to control said planets. I feel like Rhys and the real Jack will meet face-to-face. Jack might not know who Rhys is because he won't have the AI's memories, but he will definitely know Rhys is the one who brought down Helios, I'm sure. And Rhys will, of course, know who Jack is. I'm looking forward to it. It'd be an epic storyline. Personal, revenge-driven, emotional... it'd be so great. It just depends on how plot-worthy the developers want to make the game. Borderlands might have created the amazing character of Jack, but the series is more known for its humor and randomness and weapons and looting as opposed to its plot and storyline. Tales helped with that, of course, but it's not one of the primary games even though I think I prefer it over the others simply for the characterizations and plot. I love Rhys and I love Jack and their shared story is so, so compelling to me. They'd be fools to not cash in on that and make it a part of the third game. It'd be way better than trying to yank in a brand new villain who has no ties to anyone, wasn't seen in the visions Jack got (which were so conveniently cut off at the end of Borderlands 2, weren't they?) and who the guardians apparently didn't care enough about to try and murder like they did Jack. It makes no sense for a new villain in the third game. So I think Jack will return. And I'm looking forward to the showdown between him and Rhys.

This is why I hate that the canon choice for the scenario in episode 2 in the Atlas facility is Rhys picking Fiona. It makes for better character development if Rhys picks Jack. Prompting their conversation of the roof as Rhys starts to have doubts about His Hero after he sees him go mad with power in the facility. Not just flat out picking some one he barely knows yet.

The only true negative of siding with Jack is that if you try to set up Rhys and Sasha (which is pointless I might add) he kind of almost messes things up.
