I am in my seventies and I have a terrible time lining up the final screws to complete installation. Here is a little trick I discovered. Before I install the inside lock part, I put two farmer's matches in the holes just enough to hold the match. They fit perfectly. Then I put the lock part on and tape it to the door with a painter's tape (wide). Your holes are lined up. Pull one match stick and insert the screw. Pull the other match and complete installing the last screw. 'WORKS FOR ME'

This is the best comment. Perhaps I could have used toothpicks? I don’t have farmers matches. It’s already installed now. This would saved a lot of frustration. The lock button sticks now which is still a frustration.

Thanks John for your comment. I found you can also use any nail that is slightly smaller than the screw diameter. Just clip off the nail head before inserting into the holes. The main intent is to line up the holes before final assembling.

I wish I had seen your comment before I started reassembling the door set. This is great advice. Some people may know that Farmer’s matches are also call Strike Anywhere matches, made by a few different companies. Ohio Blue Tip, Diamond, etc. I use them to start charcoal fires in the grill.

Great, detailed video. I've got Kwikset locks too, and they are absolute crap. The finish wears off in no time and the mechanism fails. I've replaced mine 3 times over 20 years using the Kwikset warranty. Service is pretty bad, too. For anyone watching who hasn't bought yet, go with Schlage or another good brand.

Thanks a bunch for this video. I have a Kwikset core that came apart / wore out inside, and no longer pulls the 'tongue' back from the striker. Changing the core was easy, but watching your video definitely helped me know what parts to discard, and pointed out some things I might have missed.

1. thank you. 2. the prior kwikset was in for 40 years. One could not open the door to remove the latch by unscrewing. Enter a hammer/crowbar. Thankfully, it had been installed in a cast iron door. 3. Great explanation on installation and the options.

I removed the hardware from my door, painted the door, and tried replacing it. Couldn't. The previous owner used BOTH the plate and collar on the latch. NO WONDER IT NEVER WORKED WELL!! Removed the collar. Thank you.

OK Jo Daddy Oh..... Just finished installing the Kwikset door handle.... probably took me about 30 minutes was having trouble getting into place without being inches from the door. Finally everything fell into place, doorknob / lock is working and onto the next project! Thank you very much..... comment by another commenter made sense. He took some small match sticks and put them in the receptors for the long screws. Then when he slided the back side of the door knob on in he made sure the holes went over match sticks for a perfect alinement. Then Just pull one of the sticks out and your in perfect alinement.

Better yet use some small nails. Cut off the heads of the nails if need be.

also make sure the key cuts are up when you put the key into the lock 'if it is upside down meaning the cuts are facing down, you have to remove the cylinder and turn it the other way.

I found this doorknob to be fiendishly difficult to install before I watched the video, I t hought of returning it to the store, but I had lost the receipt. These confusing door knobs need to be packaged with out their worthless paper instructions and with a link to your video .

Lining up the screws with the holes is NOT easy.I FINALLY managed it the first time I installed my Kwikset set, but it isn't easier doing it with the replacement Kwikset set. In fact, I haven't yet succeeded.

My door knob gets stuck locked and eventhough the knob that locks and unlock it turns but it stays locked and the knob itself will not turned. Is there a way to loosen the lock-in or is it better to replace the door knob? Thanks

Hard to say. It may be in a bind. Sometimes you can loosen the screws and turn the knob to let it sort of "relax" then tighten things back.

Also the long screws were hard to line up. I had to wear a head lamp and pull back on the knob a bit to see we’re the long screw went. Finesse didn’t work for me…..

You may have it in a bind. Loosen the screws without removing them. Turn the knob a few times while wiggling it. Tighten the screws as you turn the knob. See if that helps.

To Jo Daddy: Good advice: when the button kept sticking I forced it with channel locks to get it to move. It now won’t lock anymore. I have the. receipt and will see if I can return it. If the next one binds up I will know what to do.
