with the newer ring alarm and app it shows up on your dashboard home screen so you just tap the tile to lock and unlock and it is faster than before. You can program user codes via the app. And locking using the keypad on the outside also arms the alarm and disarming using the code on the keypad that you set up in the app (when you unlock) also disarms the alarm. so you never will forget to arm the alarm and there is no dealing with entry and exit delays. though for some reason unlocking with the app won't disarm the alarm but you can just tap the disarm button on the app.

Keep the keys handy, especially if you live in an area where it gets really cold. On one particularly cold morning, the motor on the locking mechanism froze and would not turn. I had to use the key to gain entrance.

Good point. That's something that Kwikset should probably fix. Was it also hard to turn it with the key, i.e., did you have to break through some ice to turn it?

@@TheTechBuyersGuru No. The key worked fine. It was just the motor that froze. This is a great product. I am very happy with it. That was the only issue I have encountered with it.

I have a second back door entrance with just a regular kwikset deadbolt that I can get into and have a spare key, though of course I can also enter through the front door using the key.

The Got the older 914 model last year and its has had the Mode Settings & Lock Access option. I just got the latest 914-500 this month and it did not have those features. I called ring and was told that they will have a new micro code coming out in the next two weeks to address the missing feature.

That's really good to know. I actually just connected another 914-500 to Ring Alarm yesterday and again noticed the missing features. It's odd that they missed this important new release - seems like a miscommunication between Ring and Kwikset.

This is awesome and thank you much! I presently have the 914 z wave attached to my Smart Thing hub and I want to move it to my Ring hub so thanks again. Also I found out that changing the code through the smart thing app was not available for that lock so its probably a lock thing and not a ring app thing.

The "door handling process" did not work. I got an orange light. Also not able to pair with RING base probably because of the failure of the previous step. All screw bags aren't properly labeled. So now I have an expensive deadbolt that only works with a key. I Will research further to find the solution. I wish RING would release their own locks.

I just bought this today can 2 smart phones control this lock with the kwikset app? Does this have the auto lock feature and can it be unlocked and locked remotely (let's say I'm pulling up to my house and want it unlocked as I pull into my driveway

Remember, you need a smart hub of some sort to control this lock. The Kwikset lock cannot talk to it directly via your smartphone. If you use a Smart Hub, like Samsung SmartThings (amzn.to/2APlFqS), then yes, you can turn on geo-location so that it unlocks when you approach your house.

Ok I installed this lock yesterday. Is there a way to see who locked and unlocked my door when I'm at work? It keeps saying lock offline my wife was at home and can use her phone to lock and unlock and she can view the alarms. I can't view the alarms unless I'm in range (that makes no sense) is there a way for me to lock the door from work if my kids forget to lock the door)?

You'll either need the Ring Alarm (amzn.to/3cXvvoO) or a Z-wave hub like Samsung SmartThings (amzn.to/3gfcNea). Then you'll be able to lock and unlock door from anywhere.

I tested the one with Z-Wave Plus, here's the link: amzn.to/2VTPjmx. You'll need a Z-Wave hub to operate this, like Samsung SmartThings (amzn.to/3iAJ0hu) or Ring Alarm (amzn.to/31OAi9e). You do have to be careful, as Kwikset also sells versions for Zigbee, WiFi, and non-Smart keypad locks, and they all look a like.

You actually need a Ring Alarm system (amzn.to/2Lhh6II). Locks use something called z-wave for wireless communication, and Ring Doorbells only have WiFi radios. The Alarm has both, so it acts as a sort of base station for all devices.

Not when using the Ring Alarm as the hub. Other more advanced smart home hubs that connect to the Kwikset SmartCode 914 can by using geo-fencing. An example would be Samsung SmartThings (amzn.to/2FlYXW5).

So I have tried and watched every video. All videos show left button to be go red. Mine flashes yellow and no pairing. Any ideas?

Actually one of my Kwikset SmartCode 914 samples (I had four) was bad, and wouldn't connect. You might consider returning it to the store you bought it at. I can't remember if it was flashing yellow or not, but it definitely was defective, and one I replaced it with another 914, everything worked.

Ring is constantly adding features to its Ring app, so make to update. It does support control of the SmartCode 914, and says it allows arming/disarming, but alas I haven't been able to get that to work at all on my sample 914.

in my ring app, when i choose locks, it only shows CONNECT VIA RING ALARM or CONNECT VIA KEY BY AMAZON. it doesn't show the different models as shown in the video.

That's because the app has been updated since I made this video a year ago. But if you click on "Connect Via Ring Alarm", then you see the exact same screen I showed, with all the models of locks.

The constant fading out when the important stuff is being shown is really annoying. I don't know why anyone thought that was a good idea. But otherwise this is a great video

Understood, but the reason is that there's a lot of going back and forth getting screws lined up or cables out of the way that isn't very interesting to watch on video. This was all shot in realtime, in one take, and not everything looked great once we got into editing. Put another way, filming this is hard, especially when the product doesn't work exactly as it should!
