Kwikset Smartkey Rekey Without a operating key tutorial

A tutorial on how to rekey your Kwikset Smartkey lock without having an operating/working key.
We take the lock apart, and take a look at the insides and re program the lock from scratch

thanks a million for the tutorial as the alternative was to buy a new lock simply to get the replacement core. Still not sure how the lock got set to random when I messed up the re-keying process. It was a lot easier then it looked at first.

Excellent video, saved me from buying another lock. You should note, this video is for DEAD BOLT. I have a Keyed entry knob and had to watch another video to get the lock out. Then this video helped me. Thank!

Thank you! I messed up on the rekey part for my new lock! An no keys would work. Customer service wouldn’t take it back and locksmith here in my area were charging more then it was worth! Thank you for your brief and "to the point video". I lost my Key and brought my smart key cylinders to my local locksmith to have them re-key it for me and they told me that it cannot be done because it does not have "pins" like a regular cylinder, so I left. Then I called kwikset customer service and waited more than 30 minutes for someone to answer my call and give me the part number so that I could order a new cylinder with key. During my waiting time I found your video and re-keyed both of my cylinders in less than 5 minutes with just a small screw driver and paperclip. Thank you and keep up the good work!!!!

5 years later this video is still making an impact. Thank you so much for posting. My lock just stopped working one day and I couldn't reset even with the bump key or master key. Thank you for the video. The process worked like a charm. I know the key I wanted to rekey to was not working prior, so I'm not sure why, but I put that key in just to see how it pushed the wafers up and I was able to slide the cylinder out; i.e. I didn't have to push the wafers down. It is a mystery.

Very helpful. Screwed up the re-keying and had no working key. This was easy to do, and worked perfectly - AFTER I got the door off its hinges. ALWAYS HAVE THE DOOR OPEN when re-keying. Dumb mistake I'll not repeat

Thanks for this! I did find it was easier to reset the pins, insert the key and then replace the pin plate. I found getting the pin plate to slide properly for rekeying didn’t work as well if I replaced it first before inserting the key. Kudos!

This video is a lifesaver! My only complaint is that you didn't show the stem/cylinder in place and how to get the c-clip off before removing it, as well as being sure to put it back in place before re-seating the c-clip, which holds that in place for normal deadbolt usage.

What about the doorknob? I have a brand new Montara set with missing keys. The knob has a thumb press & the back of it looks complicated. I was able to rekey the deadbolt thanks to you which is much appreciated! Are knobs possible too? Locksmith fees are out of my budget.

I don't know all the various installment of this lock(knobs, deadbolt, etc). But the lock design is all the same. So if you can fix one, I'm sure you'll be able to fix all.

More: Ordered knob from retailer, was used but like new, installed, but keys didn't work! Finally figured out purchaser probably incorrectly used SmartKey, then returned. Kwikset sent me a new cylinder and removal tool for free after emailing support (which was awesome). Wanted to try this first. Success!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! It is totally accurate, and helped me immensely! Here's what happened: I messed up re-keying one of our locks by leaving the SmartKey tool (by leaving it in while turning the key instead of pulling it out -- ha ha. Please, no one forget to pull out first!). This left us with an inoperable lock that would NOT work with either our primary key, or the backup (dogsitter's) key that I had been trying to change it to. I called Baldwin and they listened to my issue, saying I needed to replace the whole lock core (bummer). BUT they sent the wrong part -- the latch assembly -- instead of the core. Trying to familiarize myself with the parts, I had happened into this video even before realizing that I had the wrong part... but then I thought why not!... I followed this (my doorknob assembly was slightly different, so it wasn't exactly the same) -- but it was enough to fix it without requesting and waiting for a new part. IT WORKED! I felt a little like a locksmith today. Amazing help from your video. My sincere appreciation for helping me fix my lock!
