Kya Steinbach-Parker, 17, challenges student government and the education system to enact the TRC Calls to Action.
Kya Steinbach-Parker, 17, is a determined Mi’kmaq/ Seneca education activist! Kya struggled at school when she was younger, and attending a land-based Indigenous middle school was what brought her back on track. Now at a mainstream high school in Fort Erie, Ontario, Kya has already successfully lobbied for an Indigenous history class in her high school. She and her classmates welcome Warrior Up host Joel Oulette as they roll out special activities for Canada’s Day of Truth and Reconciliation. But Kya’s activism doesn’t end in the classroom. She travels to Winnipeg for an Experiences Canada Youth Conference where she gets to meet her hero, Honorable Murray Sinclair, former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. His inspiring words encourage Kya and Joel to take part in a Truth and Reconciliation March, one where Kya shares her goals with the crowd about how education can be a part of reconciliation.
Warrior Up! is a 13 x 22-minute youth documentary series that follows inspiring Indigenous youth making positive change in their communities! Whether it’s defending the land, learning nearly lost Indigenous hunting and building techniques, feeding unsheltered relatives or helping decolonize the fashion industry, the young changemakers featured in this series are making an impact. Warrior Up! shares their inspiring journeys of activism in engaging, entertaining ways as our three hosts take turns travelling Turtle Island, jumping in to lend a hand alongside these young warriors. Inuk actor Anna Lambe, 22, from Iqaluit, Nunavut, Anishinaabe actor Joshua Odjick, 21, from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, and actor Joel Oulette, 20, with ties to the Cumberland House Cree and Red River Métis Nation, find themselves shooting arrows from horseback, improvising a rap, walking the runway, building a pit house and packing blessing bags, learning just what it means to be a warrior.
