You finally made it - high school. And chances are, you’re feeling nervous, excited, and, let’s admit it, pretty scared! It’s ok, breathe, you got this! And if you’re looking for tips on how to kick your Freshman Year off right and keep it that way, this video is right what you need!
In fact, your first year of high school is the best time to step out of your comfort zone because nobody is comfortable. That dude you see high-fiving everyone in the hallway between classes may seem like he has his stuff together, but he is probably overcompensating for his insecurity. If you hear a conversation you can chime in on, speak up! But there are many other things you better pay attention to.

SUMMARY:
- Most schools have an Orientation Day for incoming freshies. Don’t make it worse by annoying the teacher on the first day because you showed up late after getting lost.
- If you learn your schedule, you’ll know how early or late your lunch period is, and plan accordingly.
- Your teachers will let you know exactly what you’re going to need for each class on Day 1.
- Here’s one school supply you’ll want to have on hand right away. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy - a simple notebook with a calendar will do.
- Unless your class has specific assigned seats, try to sit near the front. Be particularly diligent about this tip if it’s a subject you struggle with.
- Chances are this is the first time you’ll have an opportunity to choose from classes that interest you, so do just that!
- Make sure you not only include time for after-school activities and homework but also time to relax, hang out with friends, and catch up on your favorite shows!
- A lousy grade on a test or an argument with a friend can really weigh on you, even if you refuse to think that it will. What’s important here is to not let those negative feelings spiral out of control.
- If you have a choice between getting extra credit that you don’t even need and going to a show with some friends, go out with your pals!
- Taking 5 minutes at the end of each day to jot down your thoughts, feelings, and the stuff you did will help you slow it all down just enough to keep you focused on your experiences along the way.
- Bad days or great days, it can be tempting to put it all out there as you’re feeling it. But when it comes to posting it all online, use some discretion.
- Take a moment to ask yourself what you want out of your first year of high school.
- Freshman year is the easiest it’s going to get. Know this ahead of time, and you’ll be glad you worked so hard to beef up your GPA early on!

I’m off to college after a few weeks, so I’ll share my thoughts. First of all, use a planner (for inside and outside of class), stick to it, and most importantly, like Bright Side said, use it! It is actually important to learn to manage your time outside the class too. This will, you will be ready for your life after high school too (I.e., college, work). Don’t take hard classes (AP/honors) in what you’re not interested in just to boost your GPA. Not only will it be boring and challenging to stay engaged, you’ll most likely forget 95% of what you’ve learned after the year is over (which is no good; trust me, if you’re gonna take an AP class, you wanna hold on to that knowledge so your college general ed classes will be easier). Same goes for EC’s (extracurricular). Don’t participate in every single little activity that you could care less about. Not only is that a waste of time, colleges will look at you as a generic applicant if you do so (as that’s what literally 90% of people do who want to get into competitive colleges). Pick a few things that you like and really work hard in them. It will make your character much more impressive than the generic college applicant who is in 20 different clubs (each in which he/she has contributed nothing to), has held 6 different jobs (where he/she showed no growth), and has done volunteering in 10 different institutions (none of which that person truly cares about). This is an important one: find out what you like. While yes, you still have some times in college to figure out your true passion, but get the basic idea right now. This way, you don’t apply as an undeclared major to colleges. If you want to do trade school, focus on opportunities there; don’t waste time with other stuff and actually find out what happens in that field of work. Avoid relationships in high school. While some can work, most won’t and will lead to unnecessary stress/drama. Don’t skip out on a class just because you think it’s hard. If you actually like it, take it. Looking back at my experience, no class in high school was hard- it only depended on how much you were into it and how good your teacher was. If you have a bad teacher, you can self-study through different ways. Khan academy was the best for me. In high school, self studying isn’t hard. However, if it can be avoided, don’t take classes with bad teachers. It helps to learn beforehand whether a teacher is good or not (for sophomore to senior years I mean- in freshmen year, classes are easy anyways). And finally, don’t be one of those insecure people that have to post their lives on social media everyday to feel good about themselves (and it’s a lot of then!).

Thank you these are amazing tips I'm now a sophomore and it felt like freshman year went by in a split second I watched this video a few days before freshman year and it helped but I was a slacker and then I had to make up all my work in one day and now this year I got A's and B's because I'm keeping up with it

I wish I'd had more confidence to ask my geometry teacher in high school for help. I just could not get axioms and postulates, and he just expected us to learn them, not understand them. He wasn't necessarily a bad teacher, his methods just didn't work for me. Even a tutor couldn't help me understand. I'm just glad I took algebra the last quarter, or I would have flunked math that year. If I would have spoken up, maybe he could have helped me find that "aha" moment to have it make sense, I don't know.

5 years - high school is 4 years. My freshman year was 27 years ago (1992). Since then the high school has gone under a major renovation. In October, they offer tours to alumni. My 20 year reunion was in 2016
