Great video, and a really cool project! With the snaps on the cleaver sheath, you have the ability to make different accessories for the knife - compass, ferro rod, flashlight, whetstone holders, etc. You might even want to add a plain leather panet to snap to the sheath when not carrying anything on it, to protect the snaps.

I like the retention of the kydex but like the feel of leather! Best of both worlds. It is definitely more expensive but I don't ever really take cost into consideration on my builds. I just work it into the final cost of the product! One thing to note on these, I generally have a screw somewhere in the sheath that goes through all the layers holding it together. I didn't do that on this one because of the shape of the cleaver.

No idea if you check these comments anymore- everything looks incredible! Im thinking of building one of these myself, and you definately gave some great tips and techniques There was 1 thing that i noticed, that may save dye in the future if no one has told you yet- Wet the leather quickly before dying, and pat dry. It will take a lot less dye- usually 2 coats if using a powder based dye. You can burnish it while its almost done drying too! And it will come out almost like glass! Hopefully that helps, and you can use that tio in the future :)

How is the kydex secured within the leather? Is it stitched where the kydex is pressure fitted tight within?
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 3 жыл бұрын
This one is pressure fit inside the wet formed leather. However, I do commonly drill a hole through all the layers and add a screw post or even just run a lanyard strap though the hole to secure them together. If you wet form; then stitch your leather and insert the kydex ot is an extremely tight fit!

The kydex and leather do not have a mechanical bond at all. The sheath is so tight that it is a friction fit.however, I usually do find a spot where I can drill a hole through all the layers and install a screw to hold the layers together
