So I've been listening to this clip multiple times a week ever since I came across it and I need to geek out over some of the more brilliant moments of this collaboration. In particular, how what they did in the first 5 minutes of sitting together essentially ended up as the song! First, if the text thread is legit, it's pretty funny to see Lewis with a nerve-wracking sense of urgency that he's messing up a first impression. Very relatable. Then at 2:45, they're off and RUNNING. Their chemistry is like Dre and Eminem in the studio for "My Name Is". Kygo is vibing to the melody Lewis has for the verse and how Lewis has built up through the pre-chorus. Within seconds of hitting the chorus, at 3:20 Kygo is thinking he wants greater contrast with the chorus than what he initially has. At the same time, Lewis is looking for some help with the music to fill here so he's clapping along for some gut-intuition-percussion. Granted, it looks like Lewis hasn't heard a sample of the hook in the text messages. They eventually land on that together not another minute later at 4:03 when Kygo says he wants to switch it up for the chorus. 3:40 - Kygo adds texture to the hook with some chord progressions, you can hear that it's kind of drowning out the lyrics that Lewis was thinking for the chorus. You can hear it clearly in the second bar of the chorus in the 4:20 s. 4:44 - Lewis' creativity jumps in. Kygo hasn't added the chord progressions to the sample, but Lewis has the added texture in his head so comes in with a brand new, more percussive, hook which springs Kygo into action to grab that melody line. 5:10 - not 30 seconds later Kygo comes up with a way to resolve the melody line Lewis opened on the 5th to the tonic note of the chord progression. So there's an idea for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd (just repeat of 1st) and 4th bars of the hook. 5:30 - after Lewis listens to that loop ONCE, he thinks of setting up that 4th bar by going up to start the third bar and stopping on the 3rd (note of the key they're in) which creates some space to make - "Then That! 5:42" - the 4th bar feel like it really ties all 4 bars together. Queue evil laughter and world takeover. 6:18 - The final touch, Lewis wants to double up the tonic note because the percussive theme he added to the hook nearly shifts the hook an entire beat forward. It feels like a small thing, but it makes a huge difference, noted by how frequently Lewis references it (6:42, 7:57, 9:18, 9:35) 8:00 - 8 minutes later they're laughing they've just cracked the code so fast. In less than 5 minutes (ignoring the video cuts) they nailed the hook without ever playing it over the chord progression Kygo added. 8:47 - The first time we hear the ideas of the melody on top of the chord progression that Kygo suggested in minute 3. They just knocked out verse, pre-chorus and hook in less than 10 minutes of working together. 10:17 - Don't forget to be friends. Collaboration at it's *finest* Bonus moments of brilliance: 8:20 - Kygo takes the percussive hook inspo and adds more texture to the hook, which is in the final version! 6:43 - Lewis delays the second time through the hook by a sixteenth for a different vibe. Super subtle. Didn't even notice until Kygo called it out. Honestly may have been an accident by Lewis because we don't hear it again. Middle section - not to be overlooked and taken for granted, Kygo in his bag. This is the stuff that sets him apart. A lot of amateur producers think of "layering" just to make it sound fuller, but Kygo can hear parts and sections like some of history's best composers draw up symphonies. I know how lofty this sounds, but I really believe his name belongs among the greats like Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. 15:47 - this is just exciting for Kygo. In some of his earlier albums like Cloud nine, he can create a story using just a 8 bar vocal sample. But combined with a storyteller like Lewis, he can tell more sophisticated stories through his songs. Disgusting how easy it is for Lewis to twist two lines in this hook and deliver what feels like a complete story. Then the man just walks away, crushes some cookies, and then records in that gravely voice again like it's absolutely nothing? It's not supposed to be that easy!!! It's honestly a relief to hear the sound engineer ask Lewis to miss a note. What a freak! Okay I'm done. Thanks for sharing your process, Kygo!

This Kyrre is really a wonderful guy. He has accomplished so much and I am proud of him as if he were my brother! We are the same age, but I really take my hat off. Amazingly used talent.
