One caveat here is that apparently in Russia, maybe other countries as well, security services are often blurred together with the military. Foreign concept to me, so I can't say much about that. I'll reserve a few percentage points for benefit of the doubt. The Sierra Leone POW, seems more like a case of him not doing his due diligence. He appears to have been looking for general work. He trusted the recruiter (unclear here what kind of recruiter, but from his surprise at the military camp, maybe it's implied that it wasn't a military recruiter), signed a contract he probably couldn't read in Russian, and was pressganged into the army. You COULD say both of them were foolish for taking the chance of going to find work in a country at war, at all. That said, I think one thing smug westerners fail to understand is just how desperate things are in other countries. Somalia and Sierra Leone are two of the poorest countries in Africa. I've been told by Somalis that local unemployment in some areas is much higher than the officially reported national figure of 26%. That guy wasn't kidding about $2000/mo making him a king in Somalia. I've heard from people there that earning $20 a week can be a life saver. And b/c the top OECD countries have been increasingly anti-immigrant and restricting entry to desperate people from poor countries in order to preserve our status quo, those poor people are getting squeezed like toothpaste in a tube to go anywhere else that isn't their country of origin and will take them. Enter stage right, Russia with its promises of big signing bonuses and salaries. As bad as the media echo chamber can be for people in the US and Europe, I imagine people in other countries have their own problems with echo chambers. In these and other recent POW interviews, I've seen all the POWs say they knew the war had been happening. Many of them even had access to YT and Google (via VPNs or whatever). And yet these POWs all individually came to the conclusions that the war wasn't that bad, being a soldier wasn't that bad, Russia wasn't so desperate that it would stoop to pressganging foreign laborers, etc. Additionally, everyone overestimates their own survival rate. Call it main character syndrome, the belief in invulnerability from being young (which few of the POWs are), or Dunning-Kruger effect of ignorance. This extends to the belief that you'll be that one lucky guy who'll find an actual regular working job instead of being lied to and rope-a-doped into the military. Don't look down on them, b/c our own countries' social media is full of people with far greater education, information access, and opportunity, who still believe in drinking colloidal silver, vaccine conspiracies, flat earth, women are out to destroy men, and billionaires are fighting the good fight on the people's behalf.

To these people, the amount of money is outrageous. The places these people are coming from, Ghana, Somalia, Iraq, Ethiopia etc., have living standards that are in the pits. If they got even a SINGLE month's pay, that would be more money than they might've seen in years back home. BUT I think there's more to the story. Something mentioned during the interview struck me, namely the 'assistance from the EU' bit at 10:16. These look like sharp, intelligent people. They watch Western news like the BBC. They're too well informed to outright believe the Kremlin's tricks. Instead, I think maybe they are trying to play multiple angles. Option 1: if they do get a backline support job and are paid, then stick to the plan and make bank. Nothing complicated. Option 2: Ukraine is an EU aligned country, IN Europe. So maybe they think that even if the Kremlin sends them to the front, they can try to escape to the West. For example, Ukraine treats POWs well, so they know they're safe so long as they get captured. If they then make themselves useful, like ratting out some Russian plans or troop positions...They could get paid that way, or better yet, bargain for refugee status. Interviewee two straight up says he intends to approach the UN/EU for help. It's fucking dangerous and a long shot at best. They're literally entering a warzone and having to dodge artillery and drones. But to many of these people, their homes are already warzones. As interviewee one put it, they have "zero" to go back to. Dodge artillery and become a POW, then bargain for a ticket to live in Europe... Some may be willing to take those odds. And all expenses are courtesy of the Kremlin!!! Before talking salaries, Russia still already covered the cost of moving them to Europe and placing them in Ukraine.

Ukraine is damaged but very doubtful it loses its independence. Now they cannot even get healthcare unless they take Russian citizenship and get conscripted, it's brutal.

During the war on terror the US and allies regularly hired contractors from various nationalities to perform low level/mundane security jobs so US forces wouldn't be stretched so thin and the actual army could focus on bigger priorities. I'd imagine they thought this would be a similar situation with the Russian army doing the actual fighting while they were basically glorified gatekeepers instead of you know being sent to the front as cannon foder.

I disagree with a lot of people in the comment section, the guy who claims to be Somali does actually look Somali, but his English sounds like from the Arab Gulf states, probably Saudi Arabia, so he could really be a guy who was born and bread there but couldn't get a desirable life there after high school - like all Somalis in gulf states - and decided to go to Russia. Also, as someone who's lived in both Somalia and Ethiopia before, neither of the people in those two countries have such an accent.
