Chuck Pfarrer, former squadron leader of SEAL Team 6, explains why Russia, despite having more than 2x more troops than Ukraine, is failing to make headway in Ukraine, amidst signs that Russian soldiers are becoming ever more disgruntled - even having recently stomped-to-death one of their own colonels.

I thought Mr Pfarrer's answer was a bit weird considering _fragging_ happened in a fairly well disciplined army during the Vietnam War/Conflict. There are stuff all spetnaz left because the vast majority of them are now employed as Sunflower food in Ukrainian fields. You've seen how over used USA SF guys were in Iraq and Afghanistan. -USSR- #russiaTerroristState had them along with their _sailor shirt_ paratroops lead the attack on Kyiv thinking Ukraine was going to welcome them the bread, salt and flowers instead of the lead that they received. Decimated would be a massive understatement to describe their total destruction.

Mr. Pfarrer's analysis continues to be very good. If we just look at the Ukrainian conduct of the war, we can learn a lot from the past two years. The UA continues to "shape the battlefield" and to successfully lure the enemy into cauldrons of death, e.g., Bakhmut, Avdivka, Krynki, and the Battle of Hostomel Airport on Day 3 of the invasion. It's death by a 1,000 cuts to the enemy. When it comes to ruzzian field commanders, they are noticeably absent from the Front. I'm sure Mr. Pfarrer is familiar with the term "Fragging" which derived from the US Army in Vietnam. If a commander got too weird and started to waste his men, then a fragmentation grenade would come out of nowhere and the commander would be toast, hence "fragging". If history repeats itself, the ruzzian army will turn on their officers as they did in 1917. There are current reports of Serb and Chechnian mercenaries refusing to fight. The US & NATO are training Ukrainian pilots within 6 months vs 18 months for other pilot candidates.There are many fully trained aircraft maintenance crews available and can easily be trained with on-line maintenance manuals and a logistical supply system already in place. ( Don't forget that the Ukrainian aerospace industry built the largest cargo plane in the world, Antinov An-225.) Ukraine will prevail and successfully push the ruzzian beast back into its lair and force the beast to live within its own boundaries.

This is what happens when power is concentrated in too few people (dictator/authoritarian) and the people are disinterested or don't participate in politics - they become disinterested in fighting for their country and, by proxy, an authoritarian because they think someone else will do it. Putin is a Soviet and historian and the Russian strategy and losses of WW2 is what he is modeling. In the 30s Russia was largely low educated peasants and they had a functional police state after the emperor died in a revolt, and they were being attacked by a fascist who saw them a subhuman. The Russian population is still a bunch of Soviet cows, but Putin may be destroying any internal police state so they can't turn on him. The Wagner insurrection shows the state of internal control, he should be scared of his citizens if he does this for another year. Korea and the heart of the Vietnam and Iraq fighting lasted 3 years, that is about the time for citizens to get fed up with the deaths of a war of choice vs survival.

When I was in the navy, some Russian high-level officer was given a tour of USS Theodore Roosevelt (I was on vacation, though). He was shocked to find enlisted men performing complicated repairs and maintenance--the Russians only have officers with university degrees doing that stuff. Then there's how they "care" for their equipment. Some Soviet ship got into a collision with some civilian ship, and just by looking at photos of the bow, you could tell that they never removed rust, only painted over it.....over and over, layer after layer. No strength in the hull to speak of. It's no surprise their army is no better.

Soldier killing their officers in battle is a well known phenomenon. The British Army have know about it forever. Troops are incredibly loyal, however if they are pushed too hard, treated badly or made to do stupid things, this is a way to even the score. In battle, nobody is going to know who shot the officer s they have a good chance of getting away with it. The Generals understand this and make allowances. It’s a fact of war. As we saw recently, an ‘almost naked’ party in Moscow for New Years Eve angered soldiers who were suffering in trenches on the front line in Ukraine.

I don't think the Russian forces have the command or coordination structure to enable them to mount large scale operations. A lack of competent, experienced or dedicated NCOs who the troops ,(mostly green or badly trained draftees) are willing to follow and an endless revolving door of senior commanders does not make for a cohesive fighting force.

Well Russia's first problem, is that standard military doctrine has forever been that an attacking Force should have three times the troops of the defending force. Interesting point about the fear of Russian commanders as to directing operations of large numbers of men. Give a large formation of guys who hate you some guns and then order them to their deaths? I can see how they would want to avoid that. Unfortunately though, the West has only one course of action to see this through, and its the course of action currently in effect. It's good that that Russia is making huge mistakes, losing tons of men and equipment, and can't get a breather to conduct its reviews and make the necessary changes. But if Ukraine were to kick Russia out, get all of its territory back and get a cease fire, we have to assume Russia would begin the process of fixing all of the problems in its military, train, rearm and otherwise clamp down on the corruption and whip its military into shape. Once done with this, they will just attack again. And this time they will mobilize a million men and make none of the same mistakes. So in a way, the West doesn't want Ukraine to win until the Russian military is completely depleted, so depleted that they can't fix their issues, can't rearm, can't even begin to contemplate another invasion for decades. If this is handled correctly by the West and Ukraine can maintain the will to keep fighting, this could be Russia's last war ever, and it wouldn't have required a single American or British or German or French soldier to give their life. If I were in charge I would be giving Ukraine exactly what it needs to fight, but not yet what it needs to win.

I'm sorry but the claim that 87% of all troops that started the invasion got killed by now is a misquote. The cited report says that Russia lost that amount of men in casualties (killed, missing and wounded). Moreover, many of those men will be ones recruited after the start of the invasion. I won't argue that Russia is doing great but that assertion differs wildly from actual estimates (~100 - 150k killed soldiers). An unrealistic view on the situation doesn't help anyone - least of all the defenders.

The counteroffensive was aborted soon after it was started because it was a bad strategy that would have cost too many lives. Russia on the other hand just keeps sending waves of soldiers to their death for minimal gains. Fortunately for Ukraine, Russia just continues with its losing strategy.

I will put this thought out there : We, as humans, should be very nervous. There are currently 3 Nuclear powers that are about to collapse which will cause an incredible power vacuum. Russia has been devastated for at least 2 generations (by international measurements) due to what it has done. China is on the verge of a massive economic collapse due to their real estate implosion. North Korea has been supported by both Russia & China and when those 2 collapse it will bring North Korea down with them. All 3 countries have ample Nuclear weapons and when their oppressive regimes collapse there is no telling who will gain control of them.

China is also imploding due to population decline. Because of the one child policy they imposed in the 1980's due to fear of overpopulation when they weren't as economically advanced as they are now, their overall population is expected to decline to under 1 billion people by 2050. (They currently have 1.4 billion people, but a large percentage of that population is over the age of 50.) Russia is collapsing for the same reason, as their prime age population of younger people able to reproduce and start families was already low due to the fall of the Soviet Union and the economic decline which followed during the 1990's, and those same people who were born during that time are being sent to die in Ukraine.

We, here in The US, predominately sent military equipment that is being phased out for new updated equipment for our military. The supplies we send to Ukraine are given a $value, then those $'s are then spent here in The US on OUR OWN MILITARY and they are built here by OUR OWN FACTORIES. Apart from the fact that virtually every fighting unit that leaves its own lines to mount an Attack in the their mobile coffins are on appearances to their fellow team mates , on a one way trip given they never return ! says alot , as for the Russians attempting as mentioned larger mechanised attacks , one of their biggest problems is security, and the ability to concentrate /.coordidate? large formations close to their start lines without being detected and targeted, their other problems stem from their own training/failings and poor combined arms manoeuvre especially in an Urban environment, their night fighting ability is non existent and their ability to counter much longer ranged precession artillery ??

An excellent interview! Jason's audio could do well with some improvement. Chuck's audio had good dynamic range and level. Jason's audio (does not seem to be using a lavalier mic??), has poor quality and echo. A more pleasing view, when both speakers are shown, side-by-side is to put them both in portrait, and larger. When featuring just one speaker - landscape works better. In My Opinion.

You can "ask Washington" why they're holding back but getting an answer, any answer, seems impossible. It would be useful to know if the decision to limit Ukraine's ability to fight back was a military choice recommended by the Pentagon or simply a political choice by the White House. Either way, making a conscious decision to not win is tantamount to saying you don't mind losing, not generally considered an American trait.

also Russian logistics suck, their logistics are being hammered so hard by the Ukrainians that the Russians are not able to attack in big offensives since doing so their logistics would fall apart badly and the attack would run out of fuel and ammo facing a Ukr counterattack. So the Russians are attacking bit smaller and piecemeal since they have supply shortages.

And more or less the ukrainians are loosing ground everywhere - why if the russian logistics were so bad that they would not get supplies anymore ? The reality of 2023 is that the russian regained more territory than the ukrainians liberated and this means the russians have the ressources . They buy even used US army trucks and other trucks in europe cause there are private dealers buying everything the russian army might need and import that into russia. The US army were so stupid to sell their surplus and old vehicles to europeans and now europeans are selling that to anyone who pays - even russians cause it is not forbidden to sell these trucks. Who else need 4x4 or 6x6 trucks and even cranes ? So US army is a great supplier of the russian war effort and logistics cause cause cummins diesel parts can be bought across the globe.
