In Devil May Cry 5: Before the Nightmare (prologue to the DMC 5 main story), Cerberus was with Dante when he and Lucia went to the Infernal Hell to defeat Balrog who got his hands on a shard of Yamato, enabling Balrog to enter the human world. Knowing how dangerous Yamato can be in the wrong hands, Dante begins fighting Balrog, who seems to be enjoying battling against Dante. To counter Balrog's fire, Dante takes out Cerberus, chatting with its soul. Dante manages to shatter the Yamato fragment in Balrog's arm, though a solid blow from Balrog causes Cerberus to break as well. Upon realizing Dante is Sparda's son and was the one who defeated Mundus as well as Argosax, Balrog submits to Dante and willingly turns into a Devil Arm until he becomes powerful enough for a rematch. So, this is what happened to Cerberus and also the reason why you can use the Balrog Gauntlets and Greaves in DMC 5.

I really enjoyed the way that the Yamato was implemented into Dante's arsenal in DMC 4. My favorite setup was the Darkslayer style with the Gilgamesh gauntlets and Ebony and Ivory. Blinding Iaijutsu strikes with sweet kung fu moves and storms of lead.

I just like every weapon dante had is unique and unorthadox af and you would've never thought that it could be a weapon But one's thing that doesn't leave Dante's Arsenal other than rebellion and E&I is a Gauntlet and Boots

I'm half surprised some people aren't going like "How's he supposed to already know how to use these things if he's never used 'em before???"... And in the event some people DO wonder about that, I have a bit of a headcannon related to such a factor: See, when Dante gets a hold of this weapon, he's connecting with the spirit of the entity it's made from. So, in reality, it's being molded to fit Dante's view of how it should work. As a bonus, that also means that once he makes the shape, the spirit in question sets the rules of how the weapon works, and transmits said info to Dante via some sort of link.

If you are wondering what happened to the weapons from the previous games, Dante actually pawned most of them because he is so dirt poor........ The original Cerberus weapon was destroyed in a fight with Balrog and Gilgamesh became a boss after being well sucked into a Qliphoth root. The rest... well someone is buying them i guess from the pawn shop.

I remember when my brother tried to beat dmc3 on DMD difficulty, and he had an obsession with Cerberus. That came back to bite him however in mission 20 because Cerberus doesn't have a very high DPS, and Vergil killed him like 15 times. Eventually I just told him to use Agni and Rudra, and suddenly he beat the mission like it was nothing
