@LaRueDeeko I would base the decision on how many rounds you have fired. These are drills to work on the transition. If you used your pistol to fight it would not hurt to ensure that it is topped off before continuing the fight. Kyle

Taking this 1 step further is the element of surprise and make someone else then the shooter load your rifle mag with 1 - 4 bullets so they need to fire their rifle but dont know hom many rounds they have! // Axel, Sweden "also a viking" ;)

@dticon This is from my buddy JP at JP Enterprises. As far as chambers, the main difference is the throat or leade being longer in the NATO chamber - On a .223 Remington spec rifle, the leade will be 0.085". The leade in a 5.56 NATO spec rifle is 0.162", or almost double. BL: the longer bullets can't be safely used in the .223 commercial chamber and some NATO spec ammo will be over pressured in a commercial chamber but any commercial .223 should be OK in a NATO chamber.. Awesome demo as usual Kyle. Thanks for the info. I just have one humble suggestion as a law enforcement officer in TX. Don't look down when you holster your pistol. Taking your eye off of your objective as you know can be deadly. Its a hard habit to break once started and if others see you doing it, it can become contagious.

Great video! At the moment we are traing for urban fighting, and we use the same methods as u are. My current weapons are: hk416 and mp7 (primary) and as secondary i use a glock 17 (p80). Not the best pistol, but its reliable for its use. "When it come to drill, "slow is smooth, smooth is fast".

learning Good habit's is so much better than Unlearning Bad habits and then trying to Learn Good habit's.. when i went into the Marines i was 18 and my Primary Marksmanship instructor asked us who has shot rifles b4? and a few hand's went up... then he looked at my D.I. and said this is a good platoon. because most of your recruits don't have anything to hold them up from learning what we're gonna teach them. and our platoon ended up taking the rifle range trophy.

looking slick kyle. very informative video, ive just served 11 years in the RM Commandos and the UK special forces support group, CQB shooting and MUC as we call it (modernised urban combat) is something we spend alot of time working on. Although our guys are very good in this enviroment I firmly believe the americans are the world leaders. unfortunately UK gun laws prevent us having as much trigger time as our cousins across the pond such as the USMC and rangers.

Simple and effective as usual!! Can you tell me in this kind of transition the benefits to rotate the rifle so the ejection port is down (facing you, which by the way it’s not what you do in this demo, but some do but I don’t get why ). Thanks

good points on the heavy front. but larue is just as pricy as a lwrc. (but better accuracy, right?) for the lube part, i have an ACR (which i dont like because its clumbersome, and i lube the firing bolt anyway)
@ArmoredAlgebra

No, I totally agree with that, and I suppose I'm thinking about the wrong audience here, but I mean that actions such as flipping on the safety of the rifle is an unnecessary step that will not be utilized in a gunfight (and this training IS for a gunfight). And if you train, even partially with steps like that, my experience says they show up where you don't want them. Accuracy is important, but Speed > Accuracy in a firefight within transition distance, and that philosophy, at least, direct me

it's just one way to see that you've actually chambered a round. Because of the stagger in R magazines, you can tell if a round is chambered by which side of the magazine the top round is at.

APDECH02, Well said. A quality AR, built right with plenty of good lube (e.g. Froglube, Slip 2000, even Mobil 1) will run all day long. Unless running a very short barrel I wouldn't buy a piston gun for anything.

Kyle. I get it brother, safety first. Seems reasonable to stage your weapon systems for realistic training. Maybe even have a partner stage your rifle mags for you. What do you think about staging with a dummy round or spent brass in the mix?
@traviesolee72
@traviesolee72 7 жыл бұрын
Much love and respect. Why, if the fight is at rifle range, would you automatically switch to a pistol instead of doing immediate action? If it's a long arm fight, the pistol will do you no good. If the engagement distances changed, you should have identified and transitioned before the stoppage. Don't wanna be an ass, just asking an honest question.
@nunoyabidness1182
@nunoyabidness1182 6 жыл бұрын
traviesolee72 so most of the time if you are engaging a target to the point where you weapon actually goes dry it is probably a dire situation, meaning you enemy is at close range, and/or there are a lot of them. Therefore the need to have a loaded weapon in your hands (like now!!!) is extremely important. If the enemy is at a greater distance at least you have a weapon in your hand and you can seek cover or determine the actual status of your long gun. However, it is always on the shooter to know the status of their weapon. If you fire like 20 rounds from your weapon from one location and there is a break in the fight, it is probably a good time to do a tactical reload (while behind cover) before moving to another location so as to prevent your weapon from going dry at a bad time. Additionally this drill is extremely good for when you have a malfunction with a fully loaded weapon. If you are conducting some kind of urban fight, there is a really good chance your enemy is within pistol range anyway. This is another reason why you attempt to put your weapon on safe prior to transitioning to the pistol; it is a really good way to to determine that your weapon may have a malfunction. Malfunctions can take some time to clear depending on your proficiency in clearing them and you may not have to the time or space to clear it right away. Therefore a secondary weapon will need to be in your hands. There is more to it, obviously, but I hope that helps to answer your question.

When you're doing transition drills how often do you reload your pistol? I've had one trainer teach me that every time I transition to pistol, I should top it off before it goes back in the holster. I've had another teach me the same rule for single stacks but that with a double stacks I had to make a personal decision based on how many rounds I thought I fired. He also taught that this is highly job dependent, since a cool guy might have several pistol mags and a joe might only have 2 or 3.

@durrance008 I think it bears mentioning that you might have to holster with threats still downrange in some situations. I wouldn't want to be running a pistol throughout a fight when I have a perfectly good rifle I could use. What are you gonna do then, drop the pistol?

nothing wrong with DI guns. Pistons are heavy, expensive and just get dirty in a different spot. I have run several hundred thousand rounds thru DI guns over the past several years and as long as the guns are lubed they run fine. Remember, a wet gun will run dirty and a clean gun may not run dry.

Can somebody please help me. I need some wisdom from someone who has been shooting much longer. Iv been practicing these rifle to pistol transition drills but in having a problem andni cant find any videos that address it. Im a right handed left eye dominant shooter. So i shoot long guns left handed, and pistol right handed. So when when i go to transition most of the time i find when i swing the rifle down to my side its impeding my ability to draw my pistol a bit. If anyone has any suggestions they would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Training for the transition vs training in real life- I don't mean to be an armchair shooter here, BUT: I see this a lot in SWAT teams, such as the TX DPS SWAT team repelling slowly in training, quickly IRL. I humbly disagree with this philosophy. I subscribe to a doctrine the USMC teaches of train as fight, fight as train. Every time. Avoid training scars. If you can't do it on a range perfectly, how in the heck do you expect yourself to do it when it counts, even imperfectly?
