Realistically the only teams I see that can offer sheet a guy like Marner is for the most part non playoff teams in recent memory and don't look like they're going to be consistent playoff teams in the next 3-5 years. Depending on the team, and if it's one you feel that will miss the playoffs at least a few times you take the picks and run.

Everybody says Tavares benefitted from Marner, Johnny had only 4 points more last year *with* Marner than the year before.. MARNER on the other hand, had *TWENTY FIVE* more points with Tavares as his centre, Johnny did more impacting, not Marner.

Exactly, so without a SCORER Marner wouldn't get NEAR as many points, Tavares is more impactful, not Marner. Tavares without Marner, 84 points, Tavares with Marner, 88 points. Marner without Tavares, 69 points, Marner with Tavares, 94 points.

@@leaf16nut what kind of argument is that. It's like saying let's take one good player out of a good line on every team. Let's take Crosby out from Malkin and vice versa. Each player helps feed the other. If it wasn't for Marner Travares would have as many goals and maybe fewer assists too. He isn't as dominating now as his earlier years where we could play with nobody and still score. I think he needs help now and can't do it on his own.

Mitch had 61 points in his first year, 69 points last year and when he got a legit scorer on his line, 94 points - that's a 36% jump compared to the previous year, that doesn't happen by simply 'getting better'. So what other factors were at play? Maybe playing with a perennial point producer and point per game player in Tavares? But yes, Tavares 'needs help', even though he's played with BUMS his whole career and managed to produce and just last year had 4 less points than with Marner.. **sigh** somebody failed math class

Kane got 10.5 3 years ago and the cap has gone up. I don't think Marner is being totally unreasonable. That being said, if he did turn down 8x11, i'm not really sure what his goal is.

Most of the people on here want him to make all these moves before July 1 because of the fear of offersheets, but they dont realize that nobody is going to take Marleau, Zaitsev or even Nylander until then because of their signing bonuses. Once those are paid out we can start to make some moves to clear some space. Marner isn't going to sign and offersheet either. He's a hometown kid probably making more money off the ice then on it ffs lol. After July 1st we'll see if Johnsson or Kapanen get one and we'll have a decision to make.

@@johnb1877 dont get me wrong I love the kid but he's not worth more than Matthews or Tavares. Centers get paid more than wingers and goal scorers get paid more than playmakers. Matthews has the second most goals 5v5 since he entered the league man. If you look at Marner's comparables and the percentage of the cap they signed for at the time of their signings, Marner is worth 9.25 mill. His numbers were very Similar to Nylander before last year and now that he explodes playing with JT he's worth more than both our number one centers? If I'm dubas I'd give him 9.5 for 6 years and wait to see what he does. If he truly wants to be a leaf he'll sign and if not it's the way she goes. I'm not saying Nylander is as good but no way should he be making 4 million more than him.

As you say because of the cap they would likely need to get prospects and picks and not higher salary players. Seems pretty counter productive to me if you ask. Oh and if that happens there's a good chance the Leafs retaliate and send over an offer sheet to an Avs RFA in the next number of years. It just won't happen.
