After the NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix this past weekend, the talk began to turn again to horsepower being a solution for the lack of passing on the race track.
Kyle Larson calls in to weigh in on the matter and drops a HUGE quote from Hendrick Motorsports on what is possible when it comes to horsepower gains and how quickly they could accomplish them.

I honestly don't care if the racing stays the same. Even though I'm sure it would get better. The top series of NASCAR should have high horsepower. It's embarrassing that grassroots cars have more horsepower than the top series of NASCAR.

You could get this if they just made the tire thinner. They have such a massive, thick, wide, tire on these Gen 7 cars that they literally cannot break loose in regular driving. If they kept 670 and reduced the tire size by like 30% it would be better. The problem with the gen 7 car is that they gave it SO MUCH downforce and grip and then reduced the horsepower numbers.

Well, too much HP and they also will blow out tires and go so fast it could get dangerous with crashes even on short tracks and road courses. With 1,000 HP on the high speed road courses, that become dangerous, as would Bristol.

Being 78 years old, and watching all forms of motorsport for 70 of those years, IMO the most entertaining series to watch were the ones where the rules at the time allowed much more horsepower than traction! As several people have commented here, that situation really allows the most talented drivers/riders to shine.

Xfinity & Trucks run a 60+ year old GMC truck rear suspension. We have the cars in the cup series now because the manufacturers want something similar to what they build & sell which is exactly what they're racing. Cup cars today are closer to a "production" vehicle than they're been since the 60s, with independent rear suspension & transaxle, rack & pinion steering, coil over shocks, etc. ALSO, the spec car has reduced the cost & leveled the playing field, allowing the small teams to have the same parts as the major teams. Andy Petree stated that Childress was spending $3,500 PER A-arm on the front end when ALL costs, engineering, R&D, testing, manufacturing, etc were totaled. That's $14,000 not including the spindle uprights(which were probably at least another $3,500 each). The racing is the best it's been in decades. The top 3 cars crossed the finish line a mere .007 second apart at Atlanta, 15 different winners over the season now with the single source car parts, little teams winning somewhere other than Daytona & Talledega

I think why NASCAR is hesitant is because they’re afraid of the cars getting so spread out around the track that only the top teams will prevail and the underfunded teams will go back to being backmarkers. NASCAR has the cars so close right now that even teams like FRM and Spire are decent. Although Spire is much better on the truck side. And I think they’re afraid of teams going back to blowing motors. I remember when that was almost a common thing on a weekly basis. NASCAR wants less DNF’s so they’re doing whatever possible to make that happen.

Here’s the weird “catch-22” you run into. If you add Horsepower to the cars at Phoenix (whether it’s 750 or 1000), you’ll actually encourage drivers to shift with the current setup. Drivers road around in 4th gear all day, and only at the end of the backstretch did some of them shift to 5th, but most just bounced it off the reverse limiter at the very end of the straightaway. Increasing horsepower would mean the cars pick up speed faster, which would mean they’d be shifting mid-straightaway at Phoenix.

The current Cup car is the closest thing to a production car that they've raced since the 50s & they're running it because the manufacturers want them racing something like their selling. Xfinity & trucks run a 60 year old GMC truck rear suspension. The single source cars have lowered the cost so the little guys can come close to competing with the big teams when they all run the same parts. All you experts should go start your own racing series since you think y'all know more than the group that's been doing it for 70 years while EVERYBODY else went by the wayside. If ya want to make it better, bulldoze all the big tracks & only race at 1 mile tracks or shorter. Glad to see them going to Rusty Wallace's 7/8 mile track in Iowa this year.

The manufacturers, team owners & drivers ALL have input & they all disagree with you. They had very close to 1,000HP & were turning the engines almost 11,000rpm, before the gear rules. They were forced to change valve springs 3 times per weekend at a cost a over $3,000 per set & were lucky the engines lasted the entire weekend. 200mph seems to be the top speed that it's safe to race at. Cutting the HP & aero helps keep the speed down & the pack closer together. Most of y'all have never experienced driving at high speeds & have zero knowledge to form an opinion. 150 mph without traffic is very "busy", to say the least, even with a good handling car. Races "back in the day" were boring as hell because the winner, usually only 1 or 2 posibilities, won by multiple laps instead of by tenths of a second. Petty would have NEVER won 200 races in today's world, probably wouldn't have won 200 IF David Pearson ever ran a full season "back in the day". Easy to be an armchair quarterback when ya don't actually have to pay the bill or produce results!

1000 HP is needed in the Next Gen to make the racing more exciting at the short tracks. That is undeniable. But people have to realize that the reason NASCAR would never lean that way is because of their desire to attract new manufacturers. No manufacturer now can commit to running a race car with 1000 HP because it doesn’t make sense on a marketing standpoint. Everyone is committing to more fuel efficient cars in hybrid systems and EV systems. Having a race car that pushes more then 900 without any type of electric aid just wouldn’t make sense for a new OEM to commit to. We’ve seen this other areas of Motorsports specifically sports cars. More than a dozen OEMs joined specifically because they could run a car that promotes their hybrid technology. With limits on their combustion components.

You don't know sh!t about engines & tuning. A naturally aspirated engine MUST have the A/F & ignition timing correctly optimized. More fuel only works when you run juice, a huffer, or hairdryers. Lean melts engines down & rich destroys driveability, throttle response & MPG. N.A. engines usually make the most HP a bit towards the lean side, 12.5:1 to 13:1. Nothing like a bunch of internet "experts" who don't know sh!t about what they're talking about. Electronic controls are controls, not magic HP creators & port FI actually makes less HP than carbs. NHRA Pro Stock & the show, "Engine Masters", have both proved it. Only 1 PS pass since 2016, when they went to FI, quicker than the old record with carbs & that pass was made with an altitude air density of 1,400 feet BELOW sea level. E.M. proved the same results on their dyno. BTW, NASCAR vehicles still get the same MPG with FI & ECM as they did with carbs, even though the HP has been reduced & the cars are more aerodynamic. MY 150 mph NASCAR look, hot rod pickup with a 409ci SBC, Holley 750 DP carb & MSD ignition gets over 20% better fuel economy than my '04 Tahoe with a 4.8 & "engine management".

All the other internals are there and would most likely be the same. If you look at the late model engines it has been the same heads and can change for more power.

It was the cam, not FI that made the difference. Your crate motor only had a 208* cam(used to be called "RV cams") to make the 405HP. NHRA Pro Stock & the show "Engine Masters" have both proven that carbs make more power than port FI. PS has only had 1 pass in 9 seasons quicker than the old carb record & it was made with an altitude air density of 1,400 feet BELOW sea level.

I find it hard to believe that durability wouldn't be an issue. Any time you get more horsepower out of an engine, something in that engine will have more stress on it and will break down sooner. Valve springs come to mind. I have a very good friend that builds Nascar engines and the quality of the parts the last few years have left him furious sometimes. He continuously has to return parts because of substandard quality and fit. A lot are sourced out of China. He tells me the issue has been getting worse, not better. I think most engine builders are seeing this.
@bradgriffith4231
@bradgriffith4231 5 ай бұрын
You're correct. They were turning them close to 11,000 before NASCAR started trying to slow them down. They were usually going through at least 2 engines per weekend. When NASCAR ruled against engine changes, they were changing valve springs 3 times per weekend at over $3,000 per set to make it live through the weekend. Reliability goes down & cost goes up when you start stressing parts closer to their limit. Almost never see a blown engine now, which saves the teams a lot of $$$$ when an engine is somewhere in the $100,000 range.

The answer is: Insurance. The tracks all have insurance, the top speeds concern the insurance companies. NASCAR wants no speeds exceeding 200mph anywhere. At smaller tracks they have their own ideas at each track what the maximum safe speed would be. Then they seek a one size fits all solution(short tracks, 1.5 mile tracks, tapered spacer tracks and road courses). That clusters the racing. NASCAR could control tops speeds by rear gear ratios but that would cause engine builders to make higher revving engines at THAT would increase cost some. It is like Denny inferred, they are buying engines and they already cost big $$. It could just be a different cam needed for the extra HP. But that will inevitably raise speeds. It's a problem alright.
@_red_scorpion_
@_red_scorpion_ 5 ай бұрын
You could also take away some downforce so they're forced to slow even more for the corners and can't exit at the high speeds that they're currently capable of doing. I also think this would be an improvement to the racing. If they still don't like the straightway top speeds, adding drag is easy.
@x-man5056
@x-man5056 5 ай бұрын
@@_red_scorpion_The idea sounds attractive but Aero-push is a monster for NASCAR. Reducing downforce will effect the cars to slow them down for sure but the racing would suck because no one could pass. That downforce must stay. NASCAR is constantly fiddling with it anyway.

It bothers me that I have a daily drivable, naturally aspirated Corvette that runs on 93 octane fuel that would whoop on a Nascar cup car in any sort of drag race, heck with a good tire it would probably whoop on them on a road course too. And it's not even a crazy build. It's pretty basic with off the shelf parts. Bring back the days of 9500 rpm and 850+ horsepower!

I don't even understand why they bothered putting 1000+ hp in the new car engine when they never planned on ever using it all. What a waste of technology to nerf it down to 650. A street Camaro ZL1 has the same amount of hp the Nascar counterpart does. It's craziness. Professional racing should be the epitome of speed, not intentionally slowed down for no logical reason. It's completely counterintuitive.

High horsepower WOULD make a difference dale. Anyone who says the cars don’t look slow as hell on tv are lying to you. Take the restrictions off and let the good drivers shine. The race I immediately think of when it comes to high horsepower is 2014 Chicagoland with keselowski, Gordon, and Larson. Go watch that race and then watch a recent 1.5 mile race and tell me what product is more entertaining? A lot of commuter cars are making close to 500 hp nowadays without big motors and whatnot. People want to see something special on track.

I have to agree Phoenix is terrible for racing in terms of the viewers experience. Same goes with all of those other medium speed track like New Hampshire and I just believe they are a waste of space on the schedule. NASCAR needs to live off of superspeedways, 1.5 mile tracks, TWO road courses a year, and short tracks (fix Bristol and Richmond pls). It’s sad this track is what settles a championship. My question is. Will reporters, journalist hard press Steve Phelps and other NASCAR suits during press conferences and interviews? Maybe ask the question. Is there actually any new manufactures? If no one is coming in any time soon the follow up should be, why not 750-1000 HP bump? Clearly it's not saving teams money to make a difference. They can say Dodge or Honda are looking at joining, well Honda can do 750+ HP engine and that wouldn't really hurt what they are doing as a company, but also isn't Honda trying to go full on hybrid or electric? Dodge isn't coming in as much as we want to see that.

"Commers and goers" won't ever again be a significant thing regardless of what kind of tire is constructed. Sure, it requires a tire that falls off, but it happened b/c nobody knew exactly how hard anyone else was pushing thier car. That doesn't exist anymore, every team has real time access to exactly how evey other car is being driven. It's a big part of why I think the access to that stuff should be heavily restricted during the race.

It would also create more tire wear and a great change of pace throughout the run as some tires would use that RR tire up more than others. Ford and Chevy have production Vehicles with more HP than cup cars and Toyota is so committed to motorsports I don't see them having an issue. Dodge has freaking trucks and SUV's with more HP and Honda builds 1.6L engines with more and 2L bike engines with almost half of the HP Cup cars make. It's embarrassing that Xfinity cars are faster than Cup cars at most tracks and trucks run very close to the same lap times. NASCAR literally has no valid argument against more HP.
