Kyle McCord got 8th at the World Championships of Warhammer 2023 and went undefeated with his team at the Gateway Open Team Tournament, piloting an incredibly durable Guard list. We talk about his games, the theory behind not only his list but the entire team's composition, and general Warhammer theory!

Great interview. I really appreciate that Kyle elaborated a bit on different options and also went into some general tactics. It’s really valuable to hear a bit about a general game plan for a particular list. What advances when, who does what in the list etc.

I really enjoy that there isnt 1 meta list in guard currently.. yes bullgryns are everywhere, but some top players arent taking any dorns while here we have someone taking 3!

its very interesting to see, that there is no single guard top list. i personally hate bullgrins, i have no super heavies and no dorns, but all these i named are top tier, but mech guard i own and love is also a top tier list. i say guard is and ever was top tier, we play old, e dont rely on detachment buffs nor need army rules. we were the first with an army rule, and it is conditional and index doesnt work with us likeable. with the lack of dedicated detachments, which are shit and should be gone, we have multiple good units to form around, leman rush, massive dorn, super heavy pressure, bull shitting grins, double live catty chimeras... full insurance fraud and rain of death was heavily nerfed, but they are still not that bad compared to the non top tier detachments other armies got. guard is very good, and i fear the codex. well i would like to see some stuff with the codex, but i know what they will do with the codex, i dont want to experience. im fine with index guard, i can be happy with guard getting a codex at the verge to 11th, like before. i miss stuff from 9th codex, i never had the chance to play, but i was the same with orks, i sold them and got back to only guard because their index removed so much stuff, that i lost interest in them fully. the codex orks didnt retain much of it, and i didnt regret it at all. i also like that the different kinds of guard armies play different, guard is very skill based, thats a bad thing kinda. guard has five different tiers of tanks, four different kinds of infantry. modern gw armies have two at maximum for everything you need, but for some even less, from 0-1, which old players know. chaos shouldnt be devided, votann isnt a full army till today. the tau release wasnt that bad, crisis, pathfinders, firewarriors, hammerheads and devilfishes, plus ghosts, broadsides, vespids and kroot. and most were named differently in all the languages. broadsides were collossus, at least in my language, i liked that name. i never got crisis for a name, the XV naming was never a thing in my country. the thing is, tau never needed more, but they got more instead of armies that needed, gw never worked for need, they worked for want, and modern want is money and not be fired.
