What an amazing artist, and so rare to hear someone talk about their art so eloquently

Saw the final show last night in Cleveland. I bought "Exile" in 1993 when it was released and fell in love with the minimalistic production and Liz's deadpan, yet hooky vocals. This album is clearly in my Top 20 of all time... so, while I was excited to see the show, I was not optimistic that it would live up to my expectations. I could not have been more wrong. Rather than trying to recreate the lo-fi sound of the album, the band presented more of a "wall of sound" to support her strong, mature voice. It was as if I was listening to a different album... even better than the original.

Drove from Pittsburgh to Cleveland last week to see the show. Exile has been my favorite album since I first heard it 30 years ago. Needless to say this was on the top of my bucket list, but I really wasn’t prepared for how awesome this show was going to be. Like she said in the interview, there were some interesting changes live, particularly in Girls! Girls! Girls! And Flower. Glad to hear she won’t go back and mess with the old stuff. Exile is perfect as is.

One of her live shows I saw back in San Francisco she sang those lyrics from Guyville where she namedrops Julia Roberts. After the song she talked about how it was true, she really did meet Julia Roberts when they were kids in summer camp, and one girl in their cabin was nervous and hemming and hawing about having the other girls pierce her ears and Julia Roberts got fed up and walked over and held the terrified girl down and BOOM pierced her ears. “She was no shrinking violet,” Liz said about Roberts. Anyway, Guyville, Whip-smart, and Whitechocolatespaceegg were powerful parts of my 90s and 2000s music listening life.

Some of her best songs weren't released on her albums. Some were "kinda" released when she put out her Liz Phair album - you had to put the disc in a computer and somehow you had access to what became the "comeandgetit" EP. And on that EP were songs like "Jeremy Engle" and "Fine Again" and "Bouncers Conversation." I think "Hurricane Cindy" came out as a bonus track. But you've got songs like "Down" which only came out when a video was released. It probably would have been one of the better songs on the Liz Phair album. Then there's "Stuck On An Island" which came out on the "What's Up Matador?" compilation. And "Bars of the Bed" and "Bloodkeeper" and "Waiting For The Bird" and "Freak of Nature." She's got a LOT of great songs that haven't been officially released on a studio album. And then she released a song called "Avalanche" about a decade or so ago. I don't even know why that was released.

“Freak of Nature” is one of my top 5 songs of hers. No idea why it’s never been released. Also, “I’ll Get You High” is so brilliant.
