Liz Phair-I came late to her music. I was in my late 30s. What blows me away, is that she is so much more sexy, in the best most empowering ways, than any other writer of rock and roll. She is so in touch with intimacy, in all its guises. She blows me away. She is the real deal. I listen to her every day. I can't get "Little Digger" out of my head, as a mother and a daughter.

What a waste that I never really paid much attention to Liz back in the 90's like I should have. Discovering her now fills me with melancholy but... better late than never! I probably wouldn't have understood her as well as I can now anyway.

I was fortunate. I was in my early thirties when the Chicago scene hit and lived just 60 miles away from Chicago. Saw all the local bands...Material Issue, Smashing Pumpkins, Urge Overkill, Liz Phair, and others. Phair put on a great show. Actually got to meet her once through a friend of my then gf whose boyfriend played in a few local Chicago bands (that's a mouthful lol). I believe I said "so nice to meet you" and she replied "likewise".

I remember hearing word of mouth about her and hearing a snippet of Never Said. I bought the cassette and have followed her ever since. She fueled my growing desire for true independent rock music. I'm eclectic, liking nearly all music, but she opened up another appreciation door for me.

@@garythompson5316 There's a saying, "We wrote their constitution but they didn't really understand it," but music they absolutely GET. Pretty much anything you're into they're doing it and well. Acres of all-girl punk bands to avant garde experimental music. "It seemed to me that the music industry was filled with gamblers, thieves and pimps." That checks with what the late Hunter S. Thompson said: "It is a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason. There's also a negative side."

@@WhatsCookingTime You are "missing" the hypocritical edge she seems to justify in the interview...some people never "grow" as musicians...I just didn't see the boundaries people said she was pushing...sounded a little contrived to me as a musician and songwriter myself...as she herself claims that she learned guitar and the "ropes" on the fly...and like I said... more power to her!!!

Apparently her move to what passes as "pop" wrecked her career, at least for her "indie rock" fans. But frankly what is considered her "best" music is a lot of boring self-involved BS to me, and that is true of most of her peers (at least to me), and today's "music" goes in one ear and out the other; it's worse than what some people used to call "elevator music" because it puts people in a bad mood (of course there is some truth to the saying "feeling good about feeling bad." It says a lot of the self-involvement of the current audience that they consider such music "great." I actually find the 2003 stuff that Phair recorded that a lot of people found a "betrayal" listenable, but that before and after it boring, depressing and forgettable. Why do you think that even today's films and television ads, when they need music for a certain "feel," seem to find it from 60s, 70s and 80s so often?
