Derek Vincent Smith of Pretty Lights has crafted one of his most ambitious LP's yet, forsaking his trademark style of sampling for live instrumentation created from the ground up. Kyle Meredith digs in to the how's and why's of this unique record backstage during Bonnaroo 2013.

And honestly Derek, hell nah, this was not boring for me, as even a simple instrumental musician, drummer at best, working w/ a band is by far more about communication than anything else, vocal, and instrumentally, the communication must be up to par. Very interesting, great interview

This is one of the better interviews with Pretty Lights that I have seen! Solid questions that "go deep" into his head as he was making ACMOTS. The explanation he gives on the guitar riff, and the way his eyes bulge out at ~8:14 was PRICELESS; you can see him re-live the excitement of creating music! Great interview, Kyle!

Agreed. The other interviews I've seen is basically the interviewer rushing through a list of questions. But this one is great. People need to let him speak on a deeper level than just "talking point" questions. He gives great insight into his formula, and what an amazing formula he has.

Great interview! His shows I've seen have been very smooth and stimulating simultaneously, which takes a keen musical ear and creative thought process. I'm glad you guided the interview the way you did because it gives a human depth to what I saw at his shows.

I love this dude, what he stands for, what he's done with music in general, his passion, creativity, soul, and last but not least his live sets. He's going to be a legend later on in the future. Like when our kids are going to electronic shows and see him still headlining at the major Festivals, it's going to be rad saying that I caught his first few shows. I really wish he'd lay off the heroin though man. It's so disappointing. It's obvious and I hope he doesn't overdose because it's happened with too many good musicians.
