"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

I don't mean to be rude, but I hate western reporting on this man. He is a straight up fascist, reporting is just different because he happens to be Japanese and not German- I say this as an Asian. Edition: Mr. Abe also regulated freedom of speech by penalizing journalists/media when they published something he didn't like. He looked like a good leader from the outsiders but trust me, he literally killed Japan. Thousands of people have suffered thanks to him yet Japan media along with many countries start to worship him as a hero of democracy and so on. He was a terrible politician, a super neo-conservative from the core who did tax cut for the rich, privatized everything, inflated military budget, re-wrote the history (mandatory textbook renewal for all public schools) to make Japanese look good and so on. He was born and raised in a rich family that's deep into the politics.

As a Japanese and a Tokyo native, yes, I can confirm that it's exceedingly difficult to obtain any guns in Japan. Kyle is also correct that there's nothing "Liberal" or "Democratic" about LDP. It is a conservative party and former PM Abe was also a nationalist. His legacy was to have escalated tensions in Northeast Asia. The women's empowerment initiative nor Abenomics didn't quite improve the lives of the Japanese, either. On a larger point, this glorifying this former PM's legacy reminded me of how the MSM covered the passing of former POTUS George H.W. Bush back in 2018, with a glaring omission of his appalling legacy, such as the time he was w/ the CIA.

For those who are curious as to who Shinzo Abe's grandfather war, it was Kishi Nobusuke. Nobusukue was a war criminal who was infamous for his exploitative rule of Manchukuo back in the 1930s, which earned him the nickname "the monster of the Showa Era". He was released from prison by American sympathizers who believe that he is the leader Japan needs to steer the country into a Pro-American direction. As a result, Nobusuke was never convicted of War Crimes by the Far East Tribunal, which opened the way for his return to politics rising to Prime Minister in 1957. And for those who find it insane for a war criminal to lead a new post war government, the US already has a history of this by allowing Former CSA VP Alexander Stephens to return as Congressman of Georgia (1873-1882) and governor of Georgia (1882-1883).

Where you grew up in a highly restrictive, conformist, and judgmental society into quite a demanding adult life due to lack of labor rights So there’s a tendency to in a way, fight against this conformity by finding your own niche. From something relatively benign like hobbies & entertainment, up to questionable things like cults. There are multiple of them there which, like cults anywhere, often ensnares their followers into crazy debt dependency & financial ruin. Never mind that they also have plenty of loan shark & mafia issues too So to me, it wouldn’t be THAT surprising if one of these “niche reasons” becoming true. The Yakuza are basically the right hand of most politicians and CEOs in Japan. Everything that “needs to be done” always ends up getting “done” by the Yakuza. Even small businesses usually get involved with them to solve minor local issues like zoning permits and bank loans, and that’s exactly what the Liberal Democratic Party wants to keep established. The August 15th demonstrations at Yasukuni Shrine could be very interesting this year. As for the shooting, it was definitely shocking. There hasn't been a political assassination since the mid-2000s but that was similar to this one being apparently a personal grudge rather than an ideological difference. The other stupid part about the Republican anti-gun control argument is that it's so hard to get guns in Japan, the guy had to use a makeshift gun that was only capable of firing two crappy shots before it fell apart. It's worth pointing out that the article from the Daily Beast that Kyle read is pretty fucking horrible and bias. Abe was by no means a great guy or a progressive, but he wasn't fucking Hitler either and the article goes out of its way to not provide any context and misconstrue everything Abe has done to be like some secret plot to install a fascist government. To those not familiar with Japanese politics, what Abe is doing may come across as xenophobic and uber nationalist but it really isn't, you need historical context. The context being that Japan has been under the thumb of the US since WW2 and never allowed to be its own nation, the reason why Abe is so gung-ho about nationalism and restoring the Japanese identity is because the opposition party WANTS Japan to be a puppet of the US and be completely dependent on US protection and economics. Abe and his party want Japan to be more independent and not a literal puppet state of the West. The reason the LDP party is so strong right now isn't because Abe is a fascist, it's because the other parties are subservient to the Western imperial powers and SHOCKER the Japanese people don't wanna elect a western puppet as their leader. So misconstruing "hey we'd like to rule our own country and make our own laws and not be just be a giant military base for the US" as "Ultra nationalism and fascism" is extremely dishonest to say the least
@rams3955

Lol OK. Im sure him being staunchly anti chinese and anti korean is totally only because he just wants Japan to be free and independent and has nothing to do with who his grandfather was. The fact is abenomics failed so Abes goal to fix his ailing aging stagnant country was to go the Mussolini route and unite the people and awaken or re-awaken them through nationalism and military strength. He wasn't able to complete that goal but I wouldn't doubt his party grabs on to his death and weaponizes it. Also you can oppose the american empire and not white wash guys like Abe and also acknowledge that a country with a tradition of burying or flat out denying its extensive history of war crimes rediscovering its nationalist routes is objectively a bad thing.

Abe actively tried to improve relations with Korea to form an alliance AGAINST China to the point where he did acknowledge and apologize for the war crimes against Korea (only Japanese PM to do so) and gave REPERATIONS to the surviving Korean comfort women. You realize the far right of Japan hates Abe right? Kinda strange how Abe is a far right fascist but somehow all his enemies are on the far right lol. Abe was a centrist by any measure, he was economically conservative but that's about it. He was basically Obama. Just a sidenote, the right-wing in Japan is not comparable to the American right. Basically they built the Japanese welfare state, and Abe did pass several reforms in that regard, especially for integrating women into the workforce, parental leave and so on. Also, while Abe might have been similar to Trump in some ways, Japan-US relations were stronger under Obama, Abe was fundamental in the formation of TPP for example, which Trump opposed. Also japanese and south koreans didn't much like the way he dealt with China and North Korea. So it's more complex. You can like him or dislike him, but that article you read is way too one-sided and too "Americanized" for lack of a better word, in its analysis.

Great video Kyle. Just a few details I'd like to add. Japan still can't declare war. Although Shinzo Abe was able to amend the constitution, so that Japan can come to the aid of an ally. Japan as a whole is very homogeneous. 98.1% of the population is ethnically Japanese. There are some groups that are ethnically different, but still counted as "Japanese". Like the Okinawans. So, the country as a whole is very wary of outsiders.

Number of gun related death in Japan in 2019 (so pre-pandemic): 0.02 per 100,000 people.Or 1 per 5,000,000. USA: 7.12 per 100,000 people.Or 1 per 14,045. So Japan gun laws is not fool proof, but it absolutely works. Of course some economics, social, and cultural factors are present as well: but you won't explain a rate 356 times lower of dying by firearm with these factors alone.

@@peterroberts4415 "The culture is very different." Yes, but so what? It won't explain 356 times lower gun death per capita. You can't explain that by the popularity of Kabuki theaters. Also, a lot of the American gun culture come from advertising from gun manufacturers. "Crime is really low." Technically truth, but what is considered a crime in Japan isn't necessarily a crime elsewhere. And vice-versa. This isn't specific enough to mean much if you do comparative politics related to crime. You would need more variable and a broader views. But it worth noting that Japan after 1958 controlled guns and even sword. They are gain in some freedoms from that... And their crime went down starting from 1960. "In Japan, You are guilty until otherwise." Actually, it's a lot more gray and complicated than that... Which isn't a good thing to say. Presumption of innocence is technically a thing, but it is viewed as less important. They just use a lot more forced concession which isn't a good idea. "Japan know that diversity is not a strength." I really wouldn't say that. Japan is an interesting case study in that regard, but I wouldn't see it as an example. Because in parts of demographics issues, their economics been stagnant for a decade or two. On top, because of how culture see some stuff as being awful, it increase pressure for suicides in the youth. On top of that, they still have the equivalent of racism. It's just different because racism is a cultural phenomenon. You have descriminations against Zainichi who been there since the 1940s, against Barakumin, against the Ainu, and sometime even against Gaijins. Sangokujin is like using the n-word while talking about people from Taiwan. They pay a huge price for that kind of cultural conservatism. Not exactly an example for the argument you seems to think. I agree with some cultural conservatism, but use the carrot instead of the stick. I also feel that it is really weird when American point at Japan as being culturally conservative in a good way when some Japanese see American movies as invading and kind of colonial. Hayao Miyazaki kind of sees it like that...

@@abointedtoyblingofmats How you think it works is not how it works. You seems to have it exactly wrong. 1. Do you remember Waco? Do you know the Black Panthers? Do you know about the FPO? Having guns make you a target the moment the government doesn't like you be it because of race, religion, situation with taxes, or any random reasons. If you don't believe me: find a black man in Alabaster, Alabama and give him a PTRD 41 (it is a nice gun) without ammo and pay him to walk around town for 8 hours with the gun. Just see how longs it takes for the cops to shoot at your black employee. Man, a black man doesn't even need a gun in your country to get shoot. Some get shoot simply for walking while black. 2. Buying guns means supporting the military-industrial complex and all their corruption and lack of transparency. AKA the buddies of the same war-laced government you dislike. The ones who stand to make a profit if the USA declare war on Tuvalu or whatever. After all, you are retelling talking points that came from advertisements of American gun manufacturer. Not something based in any credible data. Proof? Google "Colt's answer to the law enforcement agencies" + Model R-6000. That one is easily findable, but they are books of adverts of the gun industry. How many weapons do you think Colt is selling to different military apparatus? They literally made the M16. 3. More guns per citizens usually bring less freedom and a more coward population. Which do you think is more free: Japan or Yemen? However, at the same time, the more free a society, the more guns they tend to have... This seem confusing, isn't? That's because they are others variables at plays, so level of complexity here that I am not willing to bring (we are not in a graduate study class related to data analysis). You are not free because the USA has so many guns. The USA got so many guns because freedom and safety are present to a high level. However, the USA gots so many guns now that it's a national security risk and enter in risks related to terrorism and theoretically even civil war. You really need gun control.

20-year Japan resident here. Japanese people mostly wouldn't have been able to tell you about Abe's history and stances. They don't get into politics. They weren't too alarmed at the crackdown on the press, or likely didn't know. The guy who killed him is likely telling the truth. It was personal. He was probably expecting to inherit his mother's wealth, but it was gone. Old people in Japan have an obscene percentage of the wealth. When people like this guy find out they're not getting anything, they are not going to be happy about it. Don't look too much further into that. Japan is full of this dark stuff. If there were any country that hid its true nature more than Japan, it isn't known to me. I find it funny people are just finding this out.

Not different countries, it's mostly the same everywhere, US is the one that is different. The Liberal parties were formed around 100-150 years ago all over the world, from an economic point of view they are right leaning. I mean the name liberal comes from freedom, as in free economics and trade, as little government control as possible ... So when the party is right leaning in plenty of countries in time they eventually became conservative. It's the same in mine. The social issues don't really define political doctrine, it's the way they view the economy and administration.

But the reason the criminal attacked him was because Abe had Deep relationship with the Korean cult religion.(Unification Church) I knew about Abe's family has relation with this religion since his granpa Nobusuke Kish , but ignorant right-wingers who didn't know about this(seem like most of it) and they are now very shocked right now lol

Interesting fact: Abe was Japan's youngest post-WW2 Prime Minister. The youngest Japanese Premier overall was Hirobumi Ito, who took office at age 44 when the post of Prime Minister was created in 1885. After leaving office, he served as Resident-General of Korea (then a Japanese colony) and was assassinated (shot) by a Korean nationalist. Ito was 68, Abe was 67... coincidence?

By the picture I saw of the weapon used, it looks like a homemade popgun. Rather simple to make, it just uses a short piece of metal pipe (or two), and a few other items found in most garages/sheds. Acquiring the shotgun shells for it, would probably be the most tricky part, in that particular country. Although, I have seen fireworks repurposed into ammo before...
@cmfernandez9283
@cmfernandez9283 2 жыл бұрын
To say that Japan's extreme gun control laws are ineffective is completely disingenuous. Japan's homicide rate is even lower, by far, than any European country, who also have extreme gun restrictions. So there is something societally and culturally that just makes it extremely unlikely for the Japanese to kill one another. One of those cultural aspects is that they have never had permissive civilian gun culture (except when they were waging war on all of Asia). That being said, despite having a near 0 firearm ownership, Japan leads developed nations with the highest suicide rates per capita with people hanging themselves and throwing themselves off of buildings at record rates. So comparing 9 gun deaths to the U.S. 39,000 gun deaths, nearly 2/3 of which are suicides, is not an accurate comparison. 21,000 people killed themselves in Japan in 2020, a rate of 16.8 suicides per 100k residents. In the US, total suicides, including those with a firearm were 47,000, a rate of 13.5 per 100k. Japan's suicide rate, with no firearms, is 24% higher than our own and the total number of those killed was 44% of our number despite only having 37% of our population. This is consequential because gun control advocates like to lump "gun deaths" into one big category and pass blanket laws based on the statistics produced by this super category. While gun control may have arguably done wonders for Japan's murder rate, it has done nothing to stop the Japanese from punching their time clock early.
