I tried cocoa powder 12 years old and it works fine. Choc chips get a white powder coating on them when old, but they work. I like milk chocolate chips the best. And don't forget carob powder in a pinch.

The white coating on old chocolate is usually the cocoa butter surfacing, called fat bloom. It's still edible.

In the 1800s, chocolate bon bons were an expensive luxury. A gift of a box of chocolate candy from a courting man was right up there with a bouquet of red roses or a small bottle of pricy French perfume. During WWII, chocolate candy again became very scarce and highly desirable. Because the source of chocolate is from the tropics and subtropics and cocoa plants cannot be grown on the mainland U.S., any disruption to foreign cocoa crop production or to international shipping can disrupt production of chocolate products in the U.S. In my long term food storage I have a few pounds of Dutch process cocoa powder packaged in heat-sealed Mylar bags plus oxygen absorbers. Here is a British WWII recipe from the Ministry of Food for Steamed Chocolate Pudding that helped stretch a family's sugar ration: Ingredients: 8 oz. plain flour, pinch of salt, 4 level tsp baking powder, 2 oz. fat (lard, butter or meat drippings at room temperature), 2 oz. sugar (plus an extra 0.5 to 1 oz. sugar added to the milk), 3 level Tbs cocoa powder, a bit more than 1/4 pint of milk (or a milk and water mixture) and powdered eggs equal to 2 eggs Directions: Mix together flour, salt, baking powder and powdered eggs in a bowl. Rub in the fat until the mixture resembles bread crumbs. Mix together the sugar and cocoa powder and add this to the flour mixture. Mix in just enough sweetened milk to make a thick batter. Spoon the mixture into a greased, six inch diameter baking tin and steam for one hour (check a modern recipe for steamed pudding for info on exactly how to do this). Serves 4.

Wow! You guys are so lucky to have a CostCo that carries those chips and cocoa. At our CostCo those chips are only available between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Cocoa powder hasn't been at our store for the last 20 years. This past Fall, we were fortunate enough to get some Cocao powder at CostCo; it lasted about 2 weeks before it was gone. Two years ago my son found Nestle Dark chocolate chips at a Grocery Outlet; he bought 3 bags (limit) and went back a couple of days later to get more. They had some semi-sweet instead, so he got 3 bags of those. Oh yes, the Grocery Outlet ones were in 6 pound bags! Score! Those were about the last chocolate chips we have been able to find at a reasonable price ($6.00/bag). The last time I was at a Food Max (December), chocolate chips (generic) were $5.98/ bag (10 oz). Other stores are around the same price. Just too much! So glad you have your stash!!!! Blessings always!

You can play around with the amounts of the following items that make you happy.😊 I use skim milk, Hershey's 100% dark cocoa powder, Aldi's 85% dark chocolate, and sugar. I whisk all ingredients together in a pot until boiling. Once poured into one of my favorite mugs, I add mini marshmallows! Heaven on earth! ❤🍫❤

It’s not an addiction, it’s a want but it’s a really important want !!!! You can make chocolate chips and cocoa go a long ways so your stash should be good ! Texas sheet cake is my all time favorite ❤ but for a quick fix, I’ll just make a cup of hot cocoa ! Sprinkle a handful in banana bread or just half a package in a batch of cookies, it will satisfy that craving !

Psst that can work but get your food grade buckets from Lowes so that they are truly opaque. That sure don't look like lima beans. 🤣🤣 QOTD, I make a whacky cake every year for passover. It's so good I sometimes make it throughout the year. Add a little chocolate ganach to top and it will have you on a chocolate high for days. Plus it uses very little cocoa. Cream together; 5 eggs 1 1/2 c sugar 1 cup oil (I personally use EVOO since it's kosher for passover without the insane markup) 1 tsp vanilla extract Dry; 3/4 cup potato starch* 1/2 cup cocoa Combine dry and wet. In a separate bowl mix before adding to the rest; 1 tbsp baking soda 1/2 tbsp vinegar Bake 350 for 40 minutes in a 9/13. Can be topped with confectioners sugar or canned cherries to keep it simple. Or my personal, more decadent choice more chocolate 😂. In a double boiler melt; 1/2-3/4 cup chocolate chips Whisk in almond milk** a tbsp at a time until consistency is reached. Pour warm over warm cake liberally. Use a spoon or rubber scraper to get all the ganache. It's a sin to waste chocolate.

*can probably substitute corn starch, but corn isn't kosher for passover so I don't know the ratio. **this is traditionally made as a dessert for Seder which is a meat meal so no dairy (plus I don't do great with dairy in general), but here you can use heavy whipping cream if you prefer which is more traditional.

I'm a fan of adding chocolate chips to otherwise very healthy foods like pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. I also love to drizzle melted chocolate over cut up bananas or strawberries. A little seems to go a long way. On a rough night a handful can fix a bad mood. The cocoa is wonderful for no bake cookies, chocolate cake, pudding, and homemade chocolate ice cream or fudge. It turns overnight oats into something spectacular. I'm loving the recipes in the comments of this video. Lots of great ideas!

If the shortage is 375,000 tons less and approximately 3.9 million tons are produced, that's a difference of 9.61%. That doesn't take into account specific types of cocoa or regional availability. I'd say look for a price increase of between 10% and 20% depends upon geographic area. That's assuming bulk buyers don't already have a contractual pricing structure with the cocoa distributors, I imagine most do so there's a good chance that we may not see increases until the next contract negotiation - that said, there's always the chance that any product containing cocoa could also increase in price due to general production runs being smaller or slightly less frequent. That could be mitigated by controlling the product quantities being sent to the retailer. We'll see how things shake out. 👍

I was a little surprised as they were mylar packed and I use a vaccum chamber . On the other hand the Lindt dark chocolate bar was perfectly fine. Is Chocolate necessary, or is it just a comfort food? Most people love chocolate. Also seeing the happy faces of loved ones or customers after they bite into something chocolate, brings smiles on those that baked those good treats! Also, there's some benefits of eating some types of chocolate. However, if the price of chocolate continues to rise due to shortage reasons, those smiles may not be so much, but not eating chocolate isn't going to kill us, so to speak!

With that said, when my kids were small and came home with a TON of Halloween candy, I just took handfuls of it and put it in freezer bags. Also, here in the east, if you have a friend who drives a motorcoach, and happens to take kids to Hershey park for field trips, have them call you from the Hershey store. There's an old expression: if it's in your house, it's in your mouth. If this is an addictive thing for you, take a beat and read a book called The Pleasure Trap, and most cacao is mixed with extra sugar and fat to make it even more appealing (none of which any of us need). Choose healthy longevity first, friends.

A chocolate crisis? This doesn’t sound good at all. Not good at all. My favorite chocolate recipe is sugar free, although of course you could use sugar as a 1:1 substitute if you wish. Being diabetic, I use monkfruit sweetener. The cookies are super low carb (when done with monkfruit sweetener). Don’t be alarmed at the pumpkin, it’s what makes the cookies low carb and you don’t taste it in the end. And it’s correct that you’re not seeing flour in the ingredients (low carb/diabetic you know). Ingredients: 1 cup pure pumpkin puree (no sugar, just pumpkin only) 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 3/4 cup sweetener 1 egg or 1 egg white ¼ cup creamy peanut butter 1/2 tsp baking soda Pinch of Salt Directions: Preheat oven to 325F. Mix all of your ingredients into a large bowl until well combined. Use parchment paper on the baking sheet. Make round balls a little less than golf ball sized or no bigger than golf ball size. Bake for 20 minutes (check at 16 minutes and watch from there) and allow to cool. I promise you these don’t taste like low carb. Also, note that they freeze well. Refrigerate them unless eaten within 2-3 days. They don’t last long on the counter at room temperature. But then again, they’re so good they’ll disappear in 3 days anyway. Enjoy

Oh and forgot to say, I believe some of the shortages we are experiencing are due to the Suez Canal being too dangerous to pass through at times (Red Sea problems too). This has affected cruise ships, many of which won’t go through there any more. So anything coming from that neck of the woods is either going to be a lot more expensive or a lot harder to find now. Australia is already suffering from it, so say my friends there.

Chocolate bread 😋, though I actually like the taste of carob powder in it better. 1 pkg yeast 3 C bread flour 1/2 C sugar 1/4 C unsweetened cocoa (or carob) powder 1 egg 1/4 C butter or margarine 1/2 tsp vanilla 1 C warm milk (This is a bread maker recipe)

Ohh nooo, not good news. I have a comfortable morning routine of strong coffee and 90% cacao - yes 90%. Just one square that I nibble as I slurp. If not sweetness then other marvelous deep and rich flavors. I have a stash of baker's semi-sweet chocolate that keeps a long time and will get me through in a pinch but the texture is a little off. Sam's has the most reasonable price "premium European dark chocolate 90% cocoa" Wonder how well chocolate keeps vacuumed sealed?

Chocolate stores well vacuum sealed as long as you keep it in a good temperature range.

Chocolate is getting pricy. Depending on the number of kids you have, spare change in the Easter eggs. It’s about 3$ which is less than a bag of name brand candy. We do those eggs inside so the lawnmower don’t find that one lost quarter :) Last year my tiny human asked for sock. Tiny human class did a an egg hunt, I put drink mixes in them. You can crochet a stuffed animal. But the best advice… wait till after the holiday for half off candy :)

You should have just put this out to addicts! Agggg! Costco runs at 19 degrees in a blizzard are not fun!😅 Seriously? My husband recognized my only true addition about five years ago. Since we live across country from grands…he developed a method to keep me happy. Daily, one to two (ish) tablespoons of chocolate chips as a snack, daily. At first the chocolate was hidden, now it is in the pantry. There is a back up stash of stress bars, but otherwise my daily dip has worked well.

Please tell me you did not go to Costco in a blizzard!! My son left yesterday on a 2 year mission. I was an emotional mess internally. That's when I turn to chocolate. But you would be so proud. My first thought was that I wanted a Tuxedo Cake from Costco on the way home and a fork. Yes addicted and an emotional eater AND gluten intolerant. I looked at that cake in the Costco fridge and the $16.99 price tag and decided it wasn't going to fix anything anyway but just make me sick because of all those additives. I survived ... but it was close. Sometimes chocolate just helps us mamas and grandmas. Having that purer form handy is a blessing!

Dont mess with my chocolate and coffee. I have been buying both in bulk. Remember last year when they said our supply of chocolate was full of heavy metals. Every aspect of our food supply is being attacked. I buy Sams chocolate chips bags that are about the same size.

Prices double, triple, quadruple but it does not effect well off Americans. Not a big deal. Luxury status symbol. If we run out of meat, vegetables, greens, coal, oil, natural gas, electricity, water, then we have a real problem.
