Makes sense with the way the Cards fall off in the latter stages of the season too... he tries to just wing it and then gets found out by teams that pay attention and watch film on him and he plays worse because of it. Doesn't adjust.

Everybody remembers the playoff loss to the Rams, but as a Detroit Lions fan that watched the week 15 game when a 10-3 Cardinals team visited a 1-11-1 Lions team, the Lions looked like the 10-win team that day. They were prepared, hungry, and executed the game plan, while Arizona looked like a team that thought they could just show up and win. The Cardinals got their A$$ kicked 30-12. The Lions defense sacked Murray twice for 20 yards lost. He ran the ball four times for only 3 yards. He got picked by Owaryie that was returned to the 5-yard line. He threw 18 incomplete passes, his QBR was 7.0, and his rating was 72.9. The Detroit Lions did bite off Murray's kneecaps because he was benched for Colt McCoy. HC Kingsbury admitted after the game that they got outplayed and outcoached, and he looked sick doing so. But that's life in the NFL, everybody's getting paid to prepare and win games. Obviously, kyler didn't put in the necessary study time during the week to beat a 1-win team that was totally depleted by injuries in the secondary. He might have visited the Detroit Zoo instead to study the Lions that are in captivity instead of watching his tablet for a few extra hours to prepare for the game.

I also watched that game and thought it was the end of Kyler. They worked him out. Don't rush him, just contain the pocket and wait until he runs sideways into a sack or backwards out of the pocket. He literally can't see his WRs unless the pocket falls apart. I think man teams will pick up on that, and we could see them crash early this season.

I was never a firm in the 8-0 start to last year. That statement about being consciously ready and not needing to watch all that film is so cringe. Dude is getting paid hundreds of millions and for what? Just to dick around and pray on his athleticism.

Keep in mind.. that was the 1st week after DeAndre Hopkins was injured... Without Hopkins, their offense couldn't stretch the field and totally sputtered, going 1-4 down the stretch... To me, their year end decline is less about Murray, and more about Kingsbury's teams in general... and the lack of WR after Hopkins.. hence they had to go out and get AJ Green & Marquis Brown... We'll see how that moves the needle..

Quarterbacks who watch film have bad games too. It's happened to Tom Brady. Beware of over-interpreting a single game. Every player, and every team, has up weeks and down weeks. A bad team having a good week can beat a good team having a bad week. It happens almost every week in the NFL - they're called "upsets." While film study probably won't hurt Kyler, he's won games without it.

Uh oh 🤦‍♂️ Honestly, I think it's a good move for the Cardinals. Obviously, the coaching staff doesn't believe Kyler fully prepared himself last year. The Cardinals are protecting their investment and getting a message out to Kyler simultaneously. Remember now, the Cardinals didn't cast the first stone. I just wonder how this can be enforced. Couldn't anyone complete the homework on the tablet? Kyler won't be internally motivated to even look at the tablet now...

"throwing more money at him to be that guy, maybe he'll work harder now" is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. How in the actual hell would giving him more money entice to now actually study and work hard. He just got the bag for half assing it. if they wanted him to be serious they should have given him less, or have most of it not guaranteed. I liked kyler coming out of college, i like watching him play, but season after season it just seems like dude's a useless waste of space who thinks he can just wing because he's better than everyone else. Between the IG scrubbing, the quotes of him having bad personality. It all just seems undeniable at this point. Honestly you have one of the coolest jobs in the world, one of the most coveted jobs in the world and you can't be bothered studying cause you rather be out there playing CoD with your faze clan tag?

This is such an interesting clause. I can't imagine being an NFL starting QB and NOT putting in extra work every day! Look at how hard Josh Allen works on bettering himself, working with Jordan Palmer in the offseason. I doubt anyone needs to tell Josh to study! Seems like this part of the contract being leaked is a slap in the face of Murray.
@patriotsfan122480
@patriotsfan122480 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was leaked, but it’s also apparently just available for everyone cause it had to be approved by the NFLPA. So all agents are able to get copies of it from them and probably also the NFL itself. Honestly, Murray needs the slap in the face if this needs to be in there and so does his agent for allowing it to be put in there. He should be studying film constantly and learning new defenses and the wrinkles they put in place on defenses FOR HIM specifically. Can’t just depend on your athleticism his whole career either. Look at Cam Newton. Great talent, but out of the league now cause of all the injuries and can’t sling it as hard as he used to. And he watched film and defenses, which is what helped him play thru some of those injuries in Carolina.

This is fascinating and the first person I thought about was Michael Vick. I spoke to a former Falcons player here in the ATL and he said if he had a coach in Atlanta like he had in Philly he believes the Falcons would have won at least one Super Bowl. Vick himself admits he didn’t take the position seriously until he arrived in Philly. So I don’t blame the Cardinals...
@patriotsfan122480
@patriotsfan122480 2 жыл бұрын
@@ccth22 yeah, but Vick was also in a different place personally by the time he went to Philly. He may have worked harder if Reid was his coach in Atlanta, but that’s not guaranteed either because in Atlanta he was THE GUY right from jump and everyone knew it and treated him like a King. In Philly he was sitting behind McNabb to start off with, and had to work his way back into everything and earn it. McNabb meanwhile, was drafted in Philly to be THE GUY, but also had the chip on his shoulder from draft day to prove it to the fans, especially the ones who booed him that very day. They weren’t going to give him any slack or treat him like a King right from the start, and he still takes issue with his treatment by the fans there to this day, even though he was definitely their all-time best QB.

You know...when you're meme"d for being diminutive already, it doesn't help to have a "do your homework" and "screentime" clause in your contract. It def makes the child label stick. He's not the only player who plays video games or lacks film study or pounds the table for a new contract etc. It's just looks worse that he's all those in addition to pouting after bad games (see playoff) and other immature gestures. I hope he grows and succeeds. It's either that or he'll get triggered every time someone questions his film study after every bad game and do something else childish.

This is the first study contract for the modern nfl player. The new generation have different mindsets when it comes to time deduction. This will be in a lot of contacts in the future. Honestly the best thing to happen for Murray and the Cardinals.

It really isn’t. This new generation isn’t lazy like old heads insist it is. Guys like Lamar, Allen, Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, etc. are all very hard workers who are driven to study the game the right way. Kyler isn’t not because he’s of the new generation, it’s because he’s the biggest narcissist in the game. It’s that simple.

I agree with @Adam Cvik Most of these young QB’s do a great job putting the work in to improve and be great, and I don’t see this being the new thing for most of them. However, I also don’t see this not being used again in someone’s contract in the future. The Raiders would likely have loved to have had this in Russel’s rookie contract over a decade ago, and the Brown’s would have probably have loved to have this in Manzel’s rookie deal too (though that was all obvious from college and why they shouldn’t have picked him in the first place.) Honestly, I see it more going the way Florio’s saying the Cardinal’s should have taken it. Let him play out the rookie deal and go grab a younger guy in the draft. Obviously it’s no guarantee with them either, but you’re saving hundreds of millions of dollars to pay players who will put the work in and finding a leader who will as well.

I can't really imagine how much better Vick would have been. I need to hear from his coaches. Presumably Vick's coaches would have a sense of the opportunities Vick missed because he didn't recognize what defenses were doing, and quickly enough to counter. I'd want to know if, and to what degree, Vick's coaches at the time believed he should have studied harder. @@thetrib1 I agree, it’s a safe for the Cardinals front office because you’re giving Kyler $160M and they clearly know he hasn’t watched a ton of film. So it’s there to protect the franchise. Keep Kyler accountable. But let’s be real what franchise quarterback doesn’t put in the time? The Cardinals front office gave this contract to Kyler because they believe they can win a SB with him. K1 is a tier 2 Guy. When you have a quarterback you got to pay him. He’s got the “wide receiver” mentality from executives. It’s the QB game though. It’s just a terrible look for Kyler. His agent didn’t want this in the contract. It’s stunning. Clearly shows the Cardinals front office over these past three years they don’t trust Kyler to be there to study in the off-season. He’s been running this style of offense since high school. Colt McCoy will probably help him out. Need others in the locker room to push him ahead.

When Millen got off the phone, other coaches and personal room were like why the fuck did you do that, now they’re going to draft Calvin? Funny thing is, it actually didn’t backfire because Davis thoughts were thinking the Lions were throwing a sales tactic and that they wanted Russell. 4 hrs/week is nothing. It might as well not be in the contract. The most plausible explanation is to make him embarrassed by all the media attention that a hand-holding of a grown man could generate. It's a joke that the agent went along with it. The team must have demanded it, and the agent and Murray went along, however ridiculous it may be, cause they know how much per hour that 4 hours amounts to. They knew it was a nothing-burger and probably laughed when it was signed. It took a half hour for Mike and Chris to begin figuring it out.

I see no problem with this clause. Every NFL contract should have clauses in it. Where if the player doesn't do everything that's in writing in his contact his guaranteed money should be voided. Or the player could be traded or released. Teams are paying these guys millions and handling them with kid gloves.

This is just speculation concerning Kyler's contract: given that Kyler had never lost a game in H.S., I think it may have conditioned him to think football was going to be easy in his later years; that he didn't need to be as professional as needed when in the NFL. Bottom line: his earlier years formed and conditioned him to have that mindset he has now in the NFL, and the Cardinals need him to step up his game to be worthy of that kind of contract.

"One must assume that the Cards have continuously asked Kyler to study more and his response has been 'nah, I'm alright'" seems like a point chris couldn't get off of either. but that's not the main point. WHY WOULD YOU OK THIS IF YOU'RE THE AGENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is on the agent. A team putting this in isn't crazy, but the agent signing off on it is. especially comming off of the Watson contract. And I do believe that multiple teams would give kyler a bag if he were a free agent, so this has nothing to do with them not being sure if he'll get enough money on the open market.

@@thetrib1 Cos clearly - from the Card's point of view - it needed to be in the contract. They are saying if you want the security of a big money contract now (which it seems he did with injury fears naturally being a factor) then WE want the security of you at least committing to an arbitrary amount of study. Cos clearly they cann't trust him - which is remarkable indictment of a rookie first round pick. You can talk about Ben and Farve's attitude to the position but fuck me - at least they had both already brought genuine success to their franchises at that point. Sure it's embarrassing for the Card's to have to admit this but if Murray wasn't such an arrogant tosser it wouldn't have come to this.

If you have to put this clause in a 230 Million dollar contract, you don’t write the contract at all. Manning or Brady would watch film for 4 hours a day independently without it written in their contacts, never mind 4 hours a week. Especially for a guy with a sub .500 record. Better off signing Garappalo for a year and continue your search for your franchise QB

The Cardinals don't trust him but they know what kind of talent he is and that the position is the most important one in the sport. So they are stuck between a rock and a hard place here. Option A: Let him go and then go back to the search for a franchise-level talent or Option B: pay him and hope things turn out ok. They took option B with the clause added as a security blanket.

@TennisLover82 2 жыл бұрын
@@thetrib1 Because the talent is there. That Grade A talent that you can't find that often. The draft is a crapshoot every year. QB's with high grades come and go all of the time. Most of them don't amount to much in the league and don't get second contracts. So yeah, they could trade him and hope one of their first round picks they acquire will net them a true franchise (10+ year starter) but then it's just another roll of the dice and crossing your fingers. It's the most important position maybe in all of sports and when you find that diamond, you hope that they can be the key to winning it all. In this case they know the talent is there and they have seen the brilliance on the field. They just need to get him to understand that not studying may have worked in high school and college where his athletic gifts were enough to let him dominate but that doesn't cut it in the NFL, especially when you are playing the best teams/defenses.

@@thetrib1 But Russell Wilson has proved his worth over the years. He's won a Super Bowl and showcased his skills at the highest level. As for wins and injuries, Wilson has been in the league for years now. He's in his 30s and injuries and wear and tear do take it's toll, especially as a player ages. Despite losing some significant talent over the last few years, Wilson has been remarkably consistent. Last season was by far his worst and that was mostly due to some injuries and the overall record. He still threw 25 td to just 5 int. Wilson had a good team around him for a number of years that also contributed greatly to his and their success. But had Russell put in 85% total effort by slacking off at home playing video games most evenings instead of breaking down tape, do you think he would be a Super Bowl champion? I have a hard time believing that would have been the case. I'm not saying it's impossible. I just think the likelihood is much lower. Like Wilson, Kyler has a really good team around him but each of the last two seasons they have started hot, only to disintegrate in the last third of the season. If it's just injuries then fine, but if it's obvious that teams suddenly know your tendencies and play calling, or you are not recognizing their cues, signals, hand and foot positions prior to the snap that would indicate what they are going to do, that is a problem. A problem that could be solved by seeing that . . . on tape and that interception Kyler just threw could instead be a check down that turns into a big gain or a touchdown and thus into a win.
