Everybody remembers the playoff loss to the Rams, but as a Detroit Lions fan that watched the week 15 game when a 10-3 Cardinals team visited a 1-11-1 Lions team, the Lions looked like the 10-win team that day. They were prepared, hungry, and executed the game plan, while Arizona looked like a team that thought they could just show up and win. The Cardinals got their A$$ kicked 30-12. The Lions defense sacked Murray twice for 20 yards lost. He ran the ball four times for only 3 yards. He got picked by Owaryie that was returned to the 5-yard line. He threw 18 incomplete passes, his QBR was 7.0, and his rating was 72.9. The Detroit Lions did bite off Murray's kneecaps because he was benched for Colt McCoy. HC Kingsbury admitted after the game that they got outplayed and outcoached, and he looked sick doing so. But that's life in the NFL, everybody's getting paid to prepare and win games. Obviously, kyler didn't put in the necessary study time during the week to beat a 1-win team that was totally depleted by injuries in the secondary. He might have visited the Detroit Zoo instead to study the Lions that are in captivity instead of watching his tablet for a few extra hours to prepare for the game.
@robe25042 жыл бұрын
I also watched that game and thought it was the end of Kyler. They worked him out. Don't rush him, just contain the pocket and wait until he runs sideways into a sack or backwards out of the pocket. He literally can't see his WRs unless the pocket falls apart. I think man teams will pick up on that, and we could see them crash early this season.

Keep in mind.. that was the 1st week after DeAndre Hopkins was injured... Without Hopkins, their offense couldn't stretch the field and totally sputtered, going 1-4 down the stretch... To me, their year end decline is less about Murray, and more about Kingsbury's teams in general... and the lack of WR after Hopkins.. hence they had to go out and get AJ Green & Marquis Brown... We'll see how that moves the needle..
@danielmocsny50662 жыл бұрын
Quarterbacks who watch film have bad games too. It's happened to Tom Brady. Beware of over-interpreting a single game. Every player, and every team, has up weeks and down weeks. A bad team having a good week can beat a good team having a bad week. It happens almost every week in the NFL - they're called "upsets." While film study probably won't hurt Kyler, he's won games without it.

This is such an interesting clause. I can't imagine being an NFL starting QB and NOT putting in extra work every day! Seems like this part of the contract being leaked is a slap in the face of Murray.
@patriotsfan1224802 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was leaked, but it’s also apparently just available for everyone cause it had to be approved by the NFLPA. So all agents are able to get copies of it from them and probably also the NFL itself. Honestly, Murray needs the slap in the face if this needs to be in there and so does his agent for allowing it to be put in there. He should be studying film constantly and learning new defenses and the wrinkles they put in place on defenses FOR HIM specifically. Can’t just depend on your athleticism his whole career either. Look at Cam Newton. Great talent, but out of the league now cause of all the injuries and can’t sling it as hard as he used to. And he watched film and defenses, which is what helped him play thru some of those injuries in Carolina.

This is fascinating and the first person I thought about was Michael Vick. I spoke to a former Falcons player here in the ATL and he said if he had a coach in Atlanta like he had in Philly he believes the Falcons would have won at least one Super Bowl. Vick himself admits he didn’t take the position seriously until he arrived in Philly. So I don’t blame the Cardinals...
@patriotsfan1224802 жыл бұрын
@@ccth22 yeah, but Vick was also in a different place personally by the time he went to Philly. He may have worked harder if Reid was his coach in Atlanta, but that’s not guaranteed either because in Atlanta he was THE GUY right from jump and everyone knew it and treated him like a King. In Philly he was sitting behind McNabb to start off with, and had to work his way back into everything and earn it. McNabb meanwhile, was drafted in Philly to be THE GUY, but also had the chip on his shoulder from draft day to prove it to the fans, especially the ones who booed him that very day. They weren’t going to give him any slack or treat him like a King right from the start, and he still takes issue with his treatment by the fans there to this day, even though he was definitely their all-time best QB.

This is the first study contract for the modern nfl player. The new generation have different mindsets when it comes to time deduction. This will be in a lot of contacts in the future. Honestly the best thing to happen for Murray and the Cardinals.

It really isn’t. This new generation isn’t lazy like old heads insist it is. Guys like Lamar, Allen, Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, etc. are all very hard workers who are driven to study the game the right way. Kyler isn’t not because he’s of the new generation, it’s because he’s the biggest narcissist in the game. It’s that simple.
@dcblunt6662 жыл бұрын
Exactly my thoughts. This is a different generation. This clause is not a big deal and Kyler signed it. He’s on board. There are physical clauses in contracts all the time that have the same work ethic implications, why not a mental one?

I agree with @Adam Cvik Most of these young QB’s do a great job putting the work in to improve and be great, and I don’t see this being the new thing for most of them. However, I also don’t see this not being used again in someone’s contract in the future. The Raiders would likely have loved to have had this in Russel’s rookie contract over a decade ago, and the Brown’s would have probably have loved to have this in Manzel’s rookie deal too (though that was all obvious from college and why they shouldn’t have picked him in the first place.) Honestly, I see it more going the way Florio’s saying the Cardinal’s should have taken it. Let him play out the rookie deal and go grab a younger guy in the draft. Obviously it’s no guarantee with them either, but you’re saving hundreds of millions of dollars to pay players who will put the work in and finding a leader who will as well.

K1 is a tier 2 Guy. When you have a quarterback you got to pay him. He’s got the “wide receiver” mentality from executives. It’s the QB game though. It’s just a terrible look for Kyler. Every nfl team either has or looking for their franchise quarterback. If your quarterback is not studying to be a better quarterback, you do not have your franchise quarterback. Cardinals should have traded him for draft picks to find that quarterback.

Putting this in writing in his contract is a middle finger to Murray. Now if he has a bad game or season the scrutiny will pile on and everyone will grill him on his preparation. He's going to get destroyed by the media if he plays bad.

The Cardinals don't trust him but they know what kind of talent he is and that the position is the most important one in the sport. So they are stuck between a rock and a hard place here. Option A: Let him go and then go back to the search for a franchise-level talent or Option B: pay him and hope things turn out ok. They took option B with the clause added as a security blanket.
@thetrib12 жыл бұрын
I don't understand? why not just trade him if you don't trust him? and don't tell me because it's unprecedented. Because it's unprecedented to have this clause in a star QBs contract.
@TennisLover822 жыл бұрын
@@thetrib1 Because the talent is there. That Grade A talent that you can't find that often. The draft is a crapshoot every year. QB's with high grades come and go all of the time. Most of them don't amount to much in the league and don't get second contracts. So yeah, they could trade him and hope one of their first round picks they acquire will net them a true franchise (10+ year starter) but then it's just another roll of the dice and crossing your fingers. It's the most important position maybe in all of sports and when you find that diamond, you hope that they can be the key to winning it all. In this case they know the talent is there and they have seen the brilliance on the field. They just need to get him to understand that not studying may have worked in high school and college where his athletic gifts were enough to let him dominate but that doesn't cut it in the NFL, especially when you are playing the best teams/defenses.
@thetrib12 жыл бұрын
@@TennisLover82 "Because the talent is there. That Grade A talent that you can't find that often." That's why you don't trade Kyler??? understood. Russell Wilson(with 2 SB appearances under his belt). @@thetrib1 But Russell Wilson has proved his worth over the years. He's won a Super Bowl and showcased his skills at the highest level. As for wins and injuries, Wilson has been in the league for years now. He's in his 30s and injuries and wear and tear do take it's toll, especially as a player ages. Despite losing some significant talent over the last few years, Wilson has been remarkably consistent. Last season was by far his worst and that was mostly due to some injuries and the overall record. He still threw 25 td to just 5 int. Wilson had a good team around him for a number of years that also contributed greatly to his and their success. But had Russell put in 85% total effort by slacking off at home playing video games most evenings instead of breaking down tape, do you think he would be a Super Bowl champion? I have a hard time believing that would have been the case. I'm not saying it's impossible. I just think the likelihood is much lower. Like Wilson, Kyler has a really good team around him but each of the last two seasons they have started hot, only to disintegrate in the last third of the season. If it's just injuries then fine, but if it's obvious that teams suddenly know your tendencies and play calling, or you are not recognizing their cues, signals, hand and foot positions prior to the snap that would indicate what they are going to do, that is a problem. A problem that could be solved by seeing that . . . on tape and that interception Kyler just threw could instead be a check down that turns into a big gain or a touchdown and thus into a win.

Everybody is trying to dance around it. He thought his physical ability would surpass everything else in the NFL. It didn’t. Ray Lewis said it best. Physical ability doesn’t get you to the promise land, your mind does. That’s why Brady keeps burning cornerbacks. Ray said that in 2009.
