Kyler Murray’s deep passing has gone from an absolute strength to a broken part of his game. In 2022 Kyler completed just 1 of his 18 deepest passes, and took a definitive step back after a promising beginning to his career. What were the ingredients to this recipe for disaster, and are there any ways to turn things around? This week’s episode use the all-22 coaches film to analyze Arizona Cardinals Quarterback Kyler Murray’s drastic step backwards in the deep passing game.

This is a common problem w/ QBs that have come out of the Lincoln Riley/Kliff Kingsbury school of quarterbacking. Dan Mullen had the same problem, too, although he wasn't necessarily working w/ the caliber of QB that Riley and Kingsbury had. When an offense is dumbed down to the point, where it's a single-read, or reads don't have to be made at all, it doesn't make for very good quarterbacks at the League level. This is why I'm nowhere near sold on Caleb Williams. I don't really care what his stats are in college, b/c they make it as easy as possible for him to build those numbers. I think that you said it best, when you noted that this isn't really quarterbacking.
@jamesmarshall6619
@jamesmarshall6619 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, from my understanding it's a progression read offense. Nothing wrong with that but it doesn't prepare you as well to read coverage then throw. Kliff's offense is also a progression read offense which I think is another issue with Kyle's development in reading defenses. Kurt Warner read coverage first and that dictated where he went with the ball, Kyler has never really played in that style of offense so we shall see.

Jalen Hurts seems to be developing well and he was a one read only QB in 2021. I guess it all comes down to actually being developed by a pro offense in the NFL. Back when they were looking for a coach there was a lot of buzz around Lincoln Riley to the Eagles because Hurts played for him.

Cardinals would refuse to let young players learn on the job they'd rather have a 30 year old journeyman LB get cooked in coverage than their first round linebackers play. Drafted two edges and barely let them play in favor of a guy who gets cut 3 weeks later. Another example Trevor Lawrence under Urban Meyers wouldn't be the player his is today with Doug Pederson. Coaching matters and Arizona didn't have the coaches nor the management.

Kyler really struggled last year. the whole team just seemed to be in a funk from day one. Kiff seemed outmatched and burned out, Keim did a bad job of roster construction and as a whole he didn't seem to run the organization well, receivers were dropping passes, and after three years of very good progression, Kyler just looked bad. It's not that he just looked bad, he looked hesitant. Kyler has needed to mature but not sure the organization had the correct guys around him to push him to mature. New coaching staff, new system, hopefully a year of reflection for Murray and he comes back later this year wiser and better. Cards are probably going to stink this year so it's going to be hard to watch as a fan but mostly, if Kyler comes back this year we just need to see more progression as a passer, not worry too much about winning games. Get better and the wins will come.

@LAMAR THOMAS no because I doubt anyone is going to want Kyler at that contract, especially if he doesn't play well or at all. His height is an issue for some teams so they won't want him no matter what, his contract is another huge hurdle. I see people keep saying trade Kyler but ignore the huge issues with his contract, teams who might actually want him, his potential play, and fit. It sounds great in theory but the logistics are far more complicated with a lot of unknowns. I'm not entirely against it depending on how Kyler plays next year but anyone who thinks it'll be easy does not have much of an understanding of all of the complications involved.

I mean its pretty clear how Kliff's 'non-coaching' affected the offense overall and not just Kyler. One thing he's solid at was his mix of run schemes and Kyler as a runner helped that too. Problem was his passing game looks were too simple. What also didn't help was the quality of the O-line. They got pushed around too easy late in the games because the talent doesn't hold up against stronger defenses with better trench talent. Which isn't great if you are trying to run OR pass to move the ball.

@7:27 Murray needs to audible the 2 and 3 WRs to run a rub. 2 runs right at the defender, fake a step inside then move outside while 3 takes two steps forward then runs a slant. If the CB underneath blows off his initial WR, WR has a chance to be open towards the sideline. If not, the WR3 can run underneath freely for a first down. The OC either: doesn't trust Murray to adjust, doesn't think much of his WRs, or is just outmatched. Murray isn't smart enough to change the play, and the WRs aren't smart enough to see the open ground. This is just bad all around.

This in general is why super mobile QBs lose a lot against good competition. A fast QB should not be using themselves as read #2 in the NFL. Jalen Hurts is how you break this mold of running backs that throw but don't pass. He's probably the best or second best pure runner at QB in the league and by far the best mobile QB. In the mold of the Russell Wilson of old, he extends plays with his legs and then takes off if need be and won't force bad passes. @@andynaz5631 Defenses figured Kliff out. Kliff never adjusted. Gannon & Petzing are going to spend the next 6 months melting Kyler's brain on reading defenses. They've already said that in interviews. Kyler is working his butt off in the gym. He's got a huge chip on his shoulder due to all the disrespect. I think he's going to ball out after a couple games back. I'm also real curious what Clayton Tune can do with all the Cards weapons. Better OLine and solid receivers. Clayton is actually a helluva prospect. If all that fails it'll be Caleb next year.

@@AlexRollinsNFL i do think this was a bit hasty. First before coming to such a decision they should see how the development goes with Kyler this year but unfortunately he is a 31 year old receiver 32 by the time Kyler is probably 100% with a large contract. Luckily they have him until 2025 but Kliff mostly only lining him up on 1 side of the field was beyond frustrating. It took away so much from the offense and made them predictable. This last year when his job was threatened it changed with hop moving around more but IDK. I get the feeling Cardinals might not like the results from this seasons Kyler.

This is also a weakness of players entering the league. For example, Anthony Richardson will come into the league and his long ball will be the same thing. He will just chuck it up and pray and sometimes it will be caught and most of the time it will be a terrible long ball. Just look at the historical percentages of ALL QB's in the NFL trying to throw the long ball, it's a VERY LOW PERCENTAGE, VERY LOW. so then add that these guys are just "chuckers" (Just throw as hard as their arm will let them) and you get horrible long balls. (just like Josh Allen in the beginning)

Alex, what percentage of this is the coaching scheme and what is Kyler? Would you have paid him his extension? Do you consider him a bust? Kliff wasn’t a good coach and I believe he deserves much of the blame but Kyler doesn’t use his legs like he used to and like you said, seems reluctant to play QB at times and just runs schoolyard bullshit.
@AlexRollinsNFL

I don't get why they gave him his extension a year early, this whole mess would never have happened. I think the scheme wasn't very cohesive fersure, but Kyler has so many limitations. For example, he can't really play under center cause he needs space away from the OL to see, so that really hamstrung the offense. He's always been good with D Hop, so I don't think it's KK's fault to not want to feature Hop a lot, but we see what happens when there is no Hop

He also aknowledges he needs to get better and spends his whole offseason training to work on his mechanics. For Kyler it just looks like he is cocking the arm back and launching it to D hop or Hollywood brown. I had no idea he was not reading the field. I know he is 5 ft 10, but if Bryce is able to do it then there are 0 excuses for Kyler.

Kyler and Bryce are 2 different players. Kyler is your optimal 'I can run out to the side if I wanted to and throw that go ball to my guy downfield' type of guy. He rarely sprays it in between the numbers. Didn't help Kliff didn't design stuff for that either. Bryce on the other hand will sit in the pocket, scramble if pressure is coming his way but is willing to push it at the middle with timing and anticipation.
