@@SNSWoTClan Everyone forgets Wonderfalls, whose main character to me was a LOT like Georgia! I never even heard of it until I was browsing the DVDs at Best Buy on New Release Tuesday. I looked at the back saw that it was created by the same guy as DLM and sounded good so I bought it. Found out I never heard of it because it was shitcanned after airing only 4 eps! Just like with DLM, it turned out the final episode unintentionally acted as a sufficient series finale. Obviously I would have loved to have a second season of Wonderfalls too, but I'm satisfied with the only season having a good last episode. I watched the first couple eps of Pushing Daisies, but it just didn't hook me like the other two did.

Bryan Fuller is such an opinionated and specific creator. His visions are always unique and stylistic detailed and sadly studios never understand it. That's why ultimately he pulled out and his shows collapsed. Still I would rather enjoy a short lived story from his mind than a drawn out cop-out from the studio strong arms. Thank you Bryan for Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me, and Pushing Daisies

One of my favorite lesser known stories to convey to people how much a singular creative vision seems to make a difference is Fuller's exit from "Heroes." I'll try my best to truncate it: Fuller, starting as a normal staff writer became executive producer after he wrote the show's best received episode. He would exit after only one season to work on his own show. During Heroes' awful third season they triumphantly announced his return, making very little secret of the fact that they expected his involvement to save the show, and in interviews and press releases he appeared genuinely very excited to come back. His episode aired to great critical success. Basically hailed as a masterpiece (compared to the rest of the season anyway) and a return to form for the show. I say "his episode" because he would immediately exit the show once again, with no clear involvement in any subsequent episode, saying he didn't realize how much the show had changed since he'd left and didn't recognize the characters he loved. With few exceptions the rest of the season (and indeed the show) continued to be as negatively received as ever. It also demonstrates how important it is to really remain true to your characters, and not use them as bumper cars the plot drives on a whim.

I'm so glad you made this video! Dead Like Me was definitely one of the most impactful shows I watched as a teenager. It's such a shame that tv networks seem to always push back against Bryan Fuller. The shows where he has more creative control like Pushing Daisies and Hannibal and the first season of American Gods are all absolute magic. Also Ellen Muth deserves to have a way bigger career.

It was cancelled for one reason only- Showtime HATED that HBO was getting ALL the attention for the sopranos. They were determined to keep coming up with ideas and throwing them at the wall until one stuck as well as the sopranos. They didn't care if they came up with shows that were good and had decent ratings. To them that was a TOTAL failure. It had to get as much attention as the sopranos or it wasn't worth their time.

My mom just got me the box set of Dead Like Me. I unwrapped it and beheld the art on the cover with a huge and loging sense of nostalgia. I used to watch it all the time. Any time it was on tv, any time i went to a family friends house and they had it - i would request to watch it. Georges story helped me relate to the world as an angsty teen/young adult. Helping me navigate my absent parents, overbearing stepmother, enstranged siblings, my "biggest" feelings. For a show centered around death, it's enlightening. Always wanted to jump from the Cliffs of Dover

I discovered the show as a disaffected, chronically depressed 19yo and I identified so hard with George. She was my favourite tv character for years cause her character spoke so much to the negativity I was feeling at the time, but she was also a multidimensional character you could root for. I used to imagine myself as part of the reaper team, getting to leave my bland, depressing life behind and be immortal. It'll always be one of my favourite shows for helping me feel validated at a rough time and giving me hope that I could make a life out of even the shittiest of circumstances.

I love Dead Like Me to this day, It is a shame, it was such a clever and original premise that had so much untapped potential. I think even a reboot with Bryan Fuller at the helm could be good, but it seems like it is mostly dead now. What a shame. I absolutely loved this show. When Boom Boom Ba by Métisse started playing at 15:20, a flood of memories came back. My daughter, then in her mid-teens, and I would sit side by side and watch DLM. It was a treasured time spent together for both of us. Then we noticed a change in not only the writing but so many plot holes and unanswered questions - especially in the second season. It was like someone gave the new writers a very, VERY basic outline of DLM and were told, "Now start writing!" without a true sense of what the show was about. Dead Like Me was still watchable but not near as good (but you had to be willing to ignore or overlook the inconsistencies). Then that horrible, HORRIBLE followup movie . . . ugh! I knew there were problems with the writers but couldn't really find out what was going on. Now your explanation cleared things up. As usual, execs don't know enough to leave things alone, especially when things were working. I remember hearing about how Robert Greenblatt, then President of Entertainment for Showtime, got involved and was determined to replace DLM with Fat Actress. I posted on Showtime's site that "I hope Georgia gets a Post It note with Greenblatt's name on it". Then we cancelled Showtime. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Now it's time to dig out my DLM DVDs and do some binge watching.

@dfhowes Boom Boom Ba reminded me of the alternative musical scoring of another of my favorite shows, Northern Exposure. They had some wonderfully quirky characters, some oddly entertaining storylines, and some intriguingly inventive music. Their series closing theme was brilliant, and I love hearing it, and I find myself singing along with it even today. The same is true of the Joss Whedon penned theme song for Firefly. These three shows together are a celebration of quirkiness at its finest. What I truly want, before they consider a reboot of the series, is for them to take a real crack at the movie that was supposed to close the plot holes left behind, to fix the damage done by the criminal assault that was that so-called movie.

This show will always hold a special place in my heart as it helped me process my little sister's death. She was the around the same age as George even. And it's just a really good show. It's been nearly two decades later and it still holds up. I would love to see a see a limited run series with the Dead Like Me premise helmed once again by Fuller and people Fuller trusts taking place all around the world. I mean, death is a part of every culture, but their handling of it is unique across the board. Imagine a collaboration like that. If I could choose five countries to be involved, I'd go with Mexico, Egypt, Japan, Ireland and Canada. And I'd set the American portions in either Wisconsin or Texas. There could even be cameos by the original cast maybe.

I want to thank you for bringing to light how amazing this show was. And that you didn’t ruin it for anyone. I lived on a small island in Florida and we had a little library system for things the actual library didn’t have. This show passed so many hands at various ages and touched each person for different reasons. I had as the owner of the DVD’s all the notes from these people but was lost due to hurricane Charlie. The note I can still see in my mind was from a 93 yr old woman that said and I quote “ I wish I could do that. We all forget everything all the time. I hope I can do that so I can help people remember what life is really about.” Sincerely Maria Familo I signed for mgm to renew but yea we got that “movie” all involved want to forget. This show was on a high. It could’ve gone some where. But alas here we are Just like “My so called life” that could’ve been amazing too

Dead Like Me is definitely one of those "best shows nobody has seen". So fantastic to see it getting some love! Also, I love how people get different things out of media. Sometimes I'm just happy to get whatever scraps were left around for the picking.. When the Life After Death came out, of course I was bummed with no Mandy, and other mains, and settings were left out. But to see George and her -SPOLER- have a little adventure was a cool little side story and offered some (keyword.. SOME) bits of closure that I was hoping for. While it was no masterpiece, I was still happy to have another story in the world I loved so much. And I've done two re-watches over the years, and each time, I always end with the movie.

I loved watching the first season of Pushing Daisies when it first came out. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to have seen that show cause it led me to Dead Like Me. I remember finding out about it after reading up on the creator. I was hooked after the first episode! I really enjoyed the show when I was young. I need to go back and watch it again. I wish more people knew about it! but I'm glad to see more recent coverage on it! Wasn't expecting to see this in my recommended at all after so long! I'm glad to be a part of the discussion of this cult classic 😊

Love love LOVE this show (and love Boom Boom Ba & Métisse as a result), rewatch on the regular. In fact, recently introduced my teen granddaughter to it and she loved it too! I never understood the lack of popularity for it… but I have a history of loving media that didn’t hit the popularity mark and were reaped too soon, despite their quality. The episodes “Nighthawks” from season 1 and (of course!) “Haunted” from season 2 both blew my mind and are probably the ones I’ve rewatched most if I’m not doing a full binge. If any older show has the perfect structure for a reboot, it’s DLM. It’s been refreshing here in my elder years to occasionally fall in love with some excellent media property *and* see it get the kind of support that allows it to continue-most notably for me Our Flag Means Death, a show that in a different time wouldn’t have had a chance.

I have to agree with all this. I loved this show for it's short lived run. Like others I regularly do binge watches and watch both seasons and then the movie. I wish it would come back and I wonder if George would end up running this crew of reapers. The end of the movie seemed to imply that that was a likely possibilty, her standing there with all the post it notes raining on her.

I binged this series twice. Once when it was first released and then again a few years later. I remember I enjoyed it. All these years later I can say it was better than it must have gotten credit for, but it wasn't awe inspiring like "Dexter" etc. It was simply good and deserving of some more episodes. It had some good individual characters and a very good ensemble cast and lots of good , dark humor. I give it two thumbs up, but that's all the thumbs I have so, as I said its absolutely better than it may have gotten credit for. Now, after watching this video I'll likely binge it again in the next month or so. Yes, I'm retired.

I loved that you used sardonic to describe George and used it correctly when the vast majority of people would have used sarcastic. I haven't a clue as to why they do that. It's like the wild overuse of irony or ironic when they should say coincidence or coincidental. That one really bothers me. But I was watching this, Firefly, Gilmore Girls, West Wing, basically shows that didn't presume I was stupid. This trend goes back to Northern Exposure. I have always watched smart classy films. I suppose that was why I watched so little TV because of the assumption of the network executives that we were stupid and television had to pander to the lowest common denominator. I watched Nero Wolfe Mysteries on A&E. I watched David Suchet nail Hercule Poirot. I even have fond memories of Ellery Queen starring Jim Hutton and Columbo starring Peter Falk. None of these shows presumed I was an idiot. They challenged me to solve the mystery before the detective told us whodunit. Even such shows as Star Trek and Babylon 5 were written for a more intellectual viewer. They may not have always hit the mark, but they tried. Firefly was far more than just a space opera and a western crammed together. It was about something. Fans of these shows saw something deeper, while the rest of the world was writing us off as crazies and loonies. Anyway, thanks for the correct usage. Signed - a Dead Like Me fan from the beginning.

When I was in high school, I was coming up with a comic series and had a character who was nerdy and played a lot of indie games. One of the fictional games he played was inspired by Dead Like Me in which you play a character who was hired as a grim reaper after death. I never ended up publishing the webcomic itself, but I’ve repurposed things from it when running ttrpgs. I regret not publishing the comic though. There aren’t enough cyberpunk series that take place in cities in the Southern US that are still focused on making it feel like it’s in the South despite the advances in technology.

Ya so just watched the movie and what he said was accurate. And it warms my heart. That he pointed out Hollywood's thinking about women in T.V. *** he knew how to cast great female actors ****! That's 4 sure... ! We're not all pretty in life. So a show about life and death needs to cast normal looking people in order to connect with the public!!. My personal opinion. !

I loved this quirky little show. I have both seasons on DVD. I haven't seen the movie, and after this review, I'm sorta glad I didn't. It won't spoil the memory of DLM. One of the more impressive moments of the series was the episode with the little girl. George was pushing back at Rube for the reasons why they reap, and he showed her with the girl. They played a beautiful, sad version of "Que Sera Sera" as the girl ran to her version of the afterlife -- which, as you can see in this video, was a carnival. I agree that the series lost its way after Fuller exited. The latter half of the second season was jumbled. No show deserved the cliffhanger they left DLM with.
